Some of you M-Holers might be interested in this:
the 2008 Conference of the “Korean Society for Spirits Studies” (Han-guk Guishin Hakhoi) will be held this Saturday December 20th, from 9:30-17:00, in the Auditorium at the National Folk Museum of Korea (in Gyeongbok-gung Palace). We usually have dinner together in a Samcheong-dong restaurant afterward. This event will include a few academicish presentations on folk beliefs and iconography (including one by yours truly) and finish with a performance of a real Korean Shamanic ritual (by a famous Manshin).
Details and schedule are in the first comment-post here.
And for those who remember my announcement of our 2008 celebration of the United Nations international Mountain Day,my photos from that are now up on a page in my site. It really went quite well, with a lot of interested attendees; we hope for even better next year. Enjoy the shots.

———————————————
I would love to go, but my “dosa” has told me that December 20th would be a bad day for me to travel, especially in a western direction.
Sanshin -
I can’t make it but will there be any hardcopies of the papers presented? If so could you pick me up a copy?
Robert
Sanshinseon,
As an aside, is there evidence that shamans used/were at/stood or leaned on 고인돌 during their rituals or were otherwise related?
Thanks
That’s an attractive website. Very refreshing.
mine? why thank you…
Re #3: probably. but how would you get it from me…?
Re #4: I’ve seen suppositions that 고인돌 were used as sites of rituals of some kind, and that seems a reasonable assumption — there’s no reason that they wouldn’t have been. But i do not know of any evidence that they actually were used so — no historical record or archeological finds.
#6,
Thanks for the information. Are they all closed so that modern mudangs can’t use them?
I have no reason to believe that that is the reason they are now fenced-off. Probably the prevention of graffiti and people climbing on top of them is the main reason. There are plenty of sites in the national parks and other mountains that clearly have been fenced-off specifically to prevent shamanic-ritual activity, because there seems no other good reason for doing so, however…
With deep respect for our world,
there is no reason. Thank you, Sanshinseon,
for a “Heads Up”.
#8,
Could you speak further about those spots fenced off to prevent mudang activity? What sort of places are they?
Thanking you again
Stone altars at the base of cliffs or boulders, and the base-pools of some waterfalls. There is some discussion of this in my book, with a photo or two. The reasons given for this anti-ritual policy in the parks is usually the dangers of forest-fires and water-pollution — and those concerns certainly have some validity, because some shamans are not very careful about those things…
Sanshinone, I live outside forest fires.
Water pollution will never mean anything
to trees.
I still care about your(our) position.
How may we work together. I am help.
Realistic Logistic,

Result: this event went well, all smooth and on-time.
The /seongju-kut/ at the end was especially well-attended; the hall was packed, some had to stand. Dr Yang Jong-seung was re-elected as our President by acclaimation; i was retained on the board of directors for the next 3 years…
I got an extra copy of the booklet for Neff — get it from me somehow. Our annual Journal will be published this winter, with more articles included — become a member to get a copy.
