A couple of weeks ago, the JoongAng Daily’s Jason Kim — formerly of Seoul Selection and one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet — penned a piece on Yakhyeon Catholic Church.
If you’re unfamiliar with the place, give Jason’s piece a read and by all means, give the church a visit — it’s a short walk from Seoul Station.
Anyway, here’s a photo I shot of it on Sunday for SEOUL, the December issue of which comes out Friday.
And speaking of things Catholic, I discovered a cool podcast today for those interested in learning Latin, something I’ve always wanted to do but never took the time. I also learned that the Pope’s chief Latinist is, surprisingly, a curmudgeonly old American Carmelite monk.

Latin…high school latin classes
….coming back to me..
‘Shrudder’
I, too, have always wanted to learn Latin, but a combination of having two kids and encountering declensions made me give up.
You can listen to the Pope’s Latinist on Vatican Radio: The Latin Lover – Latin Language with Father Reginaldus Foster.
You might also enjoy this story about Finland’s Doctor Ammondt: Crooner ‘with a calling’ sings Elvis … in Latin. Also from Finland, Europe’s only radio news in Latin: YLE Radio 1 – Nuntii Latini.
My Latin teacher was a Jesuit brother from Indonesia – I guess he knew his Latin, but few of us could understand his accent, in either English or Latin. Still, what I did have driven into my head still helps me to this day, thanks to Brother Paul.
I envy anyone who can function on 4 hours of sleep a night. I sure wish I had that DNA. What an interesting gentleman. And from a family of plumbers from Milwaukee, no less.
Dude, that podcast is great! Thanks!
