Good Hunting, Guys

The Chosun Ilbo says Korea will dispatch the KDX-II-class destroyer Gang Gam-chan to the waters off Somalia to join in international anti-piracy operations.

In case you were wondering who Gang Gam-chan was, here’s the Wiki entry.

I’m still wondering, however, why the town of Eyl hasn’t been sacked yet. No need for a costly occupation — just a good old-fashioned plunder and burn operation. Preferably wearing pith helmets… if Daewoo Logistics hasn’t bought them all, that it.

Oh, and next time you see someone from the Indian Navy, buy him or her a drink.

I think a B-52 Arc Light strike on that town would be quick and dirty and send the proper message. We could even be sporting and give them four hours to evacuate. No need for the “Shores of Tripoli” and all that.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know, and CNN’s intrepid bobble heads tell us it’s because doing so would “violate the pirates’ human rights” – or at least provoke one of the usual suspects into claiming such.

Shee-it. I say give ‘em a taste of cold steel, Presley O’Bannion style, except spare the leathernecks and let ‘em taste the steel rain instead. I don’t buy the idea that one has to respect the 12 mile limit of state that’s not.

I hope the Kang Kam-Chan lives up to its namesake’s reputation; that would be enough.

I don’t think that bombing that town would accomplish a damn thing, except killing a lot of innocent residents ans kidnapped-crewmembers along with a few of the bad guys — there are plenty more Somali ports and fishing boats, plenty more desperately-poor men ready to become pirates if some of these are taken out. Lord, what a ‘Republican solution’ to propose — ye have learned nothing in the past 7 years??

Somolia needs something far deeper and more extensive than bombing — its socio-political order and basic economy need to be restored, or this piracy will never end, defending against it will be costing us all too much. If the world is up to that. By this point, the world may have little choice left… Somolia is making it clear that it can’t be ignored like Sudan, Zimbabwe and Congo…

Wanna give odds on the half-life in country of the kumbaya brigade?

Bombing is not the answer, anyone who thinks it is is a fool. What’s needed is the formation of a stable government in the country. The country, for want of a better word, is fucked.

Pirates should be killed, assets should be seized and no ransoms should be paid. At the same time, the UN and other bodies need to help the people.

There is a lot of desperation and poverty in that country and that drives people into the piracy ‘industry’. The problem of piracy needs addressing, but the root of the problem is that it is easy money for people in a very poor country.
