And on the Foreign Teachers with Forged Degrees Front

by Robert Koehler on November 4, 2008

Seoul’s Finest have arrested five fuzzy foreigners, including two Americans, for teaching with forged degrees.

One of the Americans, a 40-year-old man identified as Mr. D, was turned down for an E-2 visa in 1996 and ordered to leave the country. He stayed anyway, however, and spent 12 years teaching at a well-known hagwon, using his brother’s diploma with his name stuck on it.

Three hagwon bosses were booked, too, for hiring the gents.

Police believe there may be more foreigners teaching illegally and plan to expand their investigations accordingly. They also plan to continually crack down on illegal tutoring arranged through the Internet.

Did you see the picture with the article? They are holding up the C.V. and the diploma but they made sure to block out identifying information like personal names and the name of the university (It’s University of T—-).

(In case you haven’t noticed I’m going to comment on everything in the next 18 hours in case this is my last hurrah like the Will Farrell of MH.)

#1,

A TV show once showed what was clearly my friend’s degree and visa application–they hadn’t bothered to hide the surname and permanent address. My friend never was fired or deported as they claimed.

I’ll let you figure out why they are hiding the personal details this time around.

Can you give some more details? What TV show? Why was he on the show? Did he try to sue?

I’ll let you figure out why they are hiding the personal details this time around.

I thought they were always supposed to do it but sometimes they don’t. There are idiots in the media.

They ARE supposed to do it, considering the draconian libel laws here, but if the person in question is not Korean then why would the local media care? What are foreigners going to do? Sue?

“Can you give some more details? ”

No, I’ve already divulged too much.

“What are foreigners going to do? Sue?”

This sort of thing used to happen all the time because the victim rarely found out. I’m guessing producers are beginning to understand that those days are over. More of us are becoming fluent in Korean. Blogs maintained by foreigners who are fluent in Korean, such as this one, have had some impact.
