I still can not understand the fixation of sh*t in Korea. Some of the more popular children’s books in Korea deal with the subject of 똥 such as one cute little book that involves a poor little animal that has been shat (is that proper English?) upon by another animal and his never-ending search for the nasty culprit.
In the October-November issue of 꾸러기 구문 (a children’s magazine) they examine 똥 and just how much 똥 we all drop? According to the article, an Asian person who lives to 70 will have dropped some 3.8 tons of 똥.
My favorite part is pictured below. According to the article, Westerners drop 100 grams of the nasty stuff daily, while Koreans drop 150 grams, and people from Africa a whopping 400-750 grams.

I think Mr. Neff’s point was something along the lines of a Korean preoccupation with poop. It does seem as though my exposure to cartoon renderings of poop has quintupled since my arrival in the Land of the Morning Calm. I wonder how we could objectively measure such a hypothesis. Poop references per million, as compared among several nations? Probability of seeing cartoon poop across periodicals of various languages? Clearly, some scholarly research in this area is needed.

Not only do the numbers look highly suspect, but how in the world does one even begin calculating averages by ethnicity or continent? (If the average guy in Darfur or rural Ethiopia isn’t making the 400-750g African quota, does that mean the typical resident of Fez, Durban, or Kinshasa is making up for it with dumps of epic proportion? Show me the evidence!)
I suspect a great many readers in Korea – children and adults – would fail to consider the possibility that Egyptians, Rwandans, Liberians, and other Africans might have different diets, consume different amounts of calories, etc. (I still encounter university students who believe in all seriousness that everyone in Africa speaks a single African language.)
However, in the spirit of promoting a spirit of commonality among us, I like to occasionally remind Koreans that all of our ancestors ultimately came from Africa!

I am confused, because to average 750g, one must have a fair intake mass, or else be fairly inefficient at processing, and it seems to me, on average most Africans have a bit of trouble finding enough food in the first place to be so productive, at any rate of efficiency.

There is this experiment program on Korean cable. They did an experiment where they had a guy dressing up in a red dot T-shirt waving a Japanese flag. He was in front of a big projection screen amongst a crowd watching a Korean-Japanese soccer game and loudly rooting for Japan.
Lets just say it would have ended very badly if it weren’t for two young men rushing in to escort him away from an angry crowd. All the while telling people around them that he is guest to our country.

The ethnic make up of these neighborhoods has changed over the years, but to claim that they didn’t exist prior to WWII is wrong. Irish, Italian and other “white” European minorites could attest to this reality. How this or your usual – and, I should add, futile, Obama criticism – might possibly relate to the topic of poop is beyond me.
