Coast Guard Wants YOUR Ideas on How to Deal With Chinese Fishing Boats

by Robert Koehler on October 15, 2008

OK, smartypants, here’s you chance — through Oct 24, the Coast Guard will be accepting ideas on how to deal with illegal Chinese fishing boats.

No, I’m not joking — it’s in the Chosun Ilbo.

Proposals must be at least one A4 sheet long — you can leave your ideas at the link above OR here.

Proposals will be judged on practicality, originality and effectiveness, with the winner getting 500,000 won in gift certificates for cultural products. The two runner-ups will get 300,000 won in gift certificates and the next three 200,000 won in gift certificates.

Winners will be announced in mid-November. For more information, call 835-2643.

I suggest using guns in some way. Lets get creative here. Perhaps… guns big enough to hurt boats.

What amateur hour from the military! Somebody please verify for me… Roh is out of office, right?

Since when did something being in the Chosun Ilbo mean it is true? ;)

That’s an easy one, follow the US CG example and ask Chinese coast guard to post personnel on S. Korean CG cutters. When boarding Chinese fishing ships, send the Chinese officer in first, with the Korea inspector behind him. The US Coast Guard (Pacific) has Chinese officers on board for stuff like this.

#2,

Yeah. Not the best PR idea I’ve ever heard of.

#3,

Great idea, nonetheless.

Why stop there? Next the MND should ask how to handle spotting Nork commando submarine landings. Oh wait, taxi drivers are the proven solution for that.

Then Israel could have a competition on how to handle the Iranian nuclear threat, Georgia on how to handle Russkie invaders and a whole host of other issues. Call it citizen-driven foreign policy, a new paradigm for the world.

Actually, outside of using guns with real bullets, #3 sounds pretty good.

Last I checked the 해양경찰청 was under the home office (Ministry of [take your pic this administration] and Government Affairs), and not under the MND. And it’s only recently that it’s been called the coast guard in English. For decades it was the Maritime Police.

I’d like to see something that is a good photo op. Something that is public, in the international media, and is an embarrassment enough to be a deterrent but not so much as to hurt Korean interests in China given how China hates being taken to task on anything by countries like Korea and Vietnam.

At any rate, anything other than sinking them would require actually catching them, and maybe that’s a lot to hope for.

If this is not the best example of the government throwing up their arms and saying “We don’t have a clue what we’re doing” then I don’t know what is.

Will the winner get their job, too? If they’re doing it, and doing it better, shouldn’t they get it permanently and fire the clueless riff raff?

“If this is not the best example of the government throwing up their arms and saying “We don’t have a clue what we’re doing” then I don’t know what is.”

Could be a case of, “Let’s make them think we give a damn about their opinion,” or, “Let’s drum up nationalism first”.

I like how the Chinese fisherman with the axe has really slanty eyes, while the Korea has big, round ones.

I like how the Chinese fisherman with the axe has really slanty eyes, while the Korea has big, round ones.

The Chinese fisherman also appears to be poor. Note the scrubby jacket.

Do you think they would hire me as a privateer? I’ve always wanted to do that. Not that I have any relevant skills or experience. But I do look the part. Arrgghh.

Homing torpedoes or 6-inch guns are the first thing that comes to mind.

Damn, I was all ready to submit my proposal of outfitting the entire coast guard with fishing rods with giant magnets. I guess that idea is already taken…

@10

Yeah I noticed that too. I’ve seen Japanese do the same thing to Chinese and Koreans.

I really don’t get the Asian self-racism. The subtext is always “you are dirty poor slanty-eyed Asians, while we are virtually Causasian.” Judging by the pictures, anyway.
