With North Korea releasing photos of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on a recent inspection to a front-line military unit, GI Korea ponders:
wonder how anyone knows whether these pictures are current or not?
The answer — probably not.
Yonhap, citing an intelligence official, reports that experts believe the photos were taken in July—August, judging from the foliage. Some even believe the photos may have been from an August 2003 or July 2004 visit to the unit in question — KPA Unit 821 is based in Tongcheon, Gangwon-do, well within South Korea’s signal intelligence net, and nobody detected a recent visit by the Big Man.
That being said, is Comrade Kim the Mack Daddy or what?

Doesn’t North Korea still have a summer holiday facility (and palace) in Kangwondo, he was probably on his way to or from there. Its quite obvious from the photo that he was impressed by the sora.

One of my best friends was then the chief writer/executive producer of Law and Order. He invited me to dinner @ Elaines’s, and Ice T and Chris Noth showed up. They were pretty regular guys – not any more enamored of themselves than the usual New Yorker – and weren’t caravaning with lots of pilot fish, although there were plenty of wannabe volunteers. In the photo you linked KJI is clearly preparing to make mandupi (excuse my romanization), which is a strange thing to associate with sora.
Is the white elephant in this room the theory that KJI is dead and the KCNA is putting out old photos of his instructional visits?

Despite all this, Kim Jong Il has official mates numbering in at least 10, and unofficial probably in the 100’s.

That one picture with the ladies appears to have been from the same series. The other ones look like they might be much older or simply pictures of one of his doubles (notice how we can’t see ‘his’ face clearly?).

Yes, I find it very interesting that the media, both Korean and foreign, quickly dismiss his daughter as his successor despite the fact that often accompanies him on official visits.

Other than Queen Seondeok and Jindeok during the Silla period, Korea has never had a female direct ruler. Say what you want about North Koreans, but they are a stubborn neo-confucian lot. We are talking about a guy (Kim Jong Il) who didn’t announce his rulership until the customary 7 year period that a prince is suppose to mourn the king during Chosun era times!!!
