In what looks like suicide, actress Choi Jin-sil was found dead this morning at her home in Seocho-gu.
No suicide note has yet been found, but she was found hanging by the neck in her shower stall.
Lots of speculation at this point, namely, that she killed herself due to rumors (for the spreading of which somebody has been arrested) that she was involved in the loansharking that allegedly drove entertainer Ahn Jae-hwan, the husband of her close friend Jeong Seon-hui, to his death.

Sad news. She was in the twilight of her reign as it-girl when I first arrived in Korea. However horrible the rumors and even if they were true, I can’t understand how a mom not suffering from mental illness could leave her children.
Sad but damn, what an effin waste -_-;
That spot between a rock and a hard place can be miserable indeed. R.I.P.
BUT,
Can’t these celebs find other ways to fuck up their lives? It’s like there’s only two or three words in the minds of these people: live (else) suicide.
“I can’t understand how a mom not suffering from mental illness could leave her children.”
Neither can I. But, it could have been murder…even more likely so if she really was involved in loansharking. I hope that the cops are conducting a thorough forensics investigation.
Wow,……….sounds like great fodder for a new drama series.
The rumour mill is in full effect this morning. If it was suicide, she’s a coward for leaving her children. But in this country, I’m beginning to wonder if ruling death as a suicide is an easy way out for one of the laziest police-forces in the world.
Cowardice does not exist in Korean culture. It is all about telling the truth and confronting facts. Everyone knows this.
Murder? No. She called her friend late, drunk, and talked about why she had to end up like the way she ended up, (Divorced from ex pro baseball player Jo Sung Min after a vicious fight), with two kids fighting with her ex over alimony. Then this unfounded rumor that she took too seriously and which stressed her out completely. It sounds like years of stress and depression finally got to her. Her body was found in a shower stall by her mother. If there was a killer in the house her mother would have known about it.
#8,
Thanks for clarifying that for us.
Cowardice does not exist in Korean culture. It is all about telling the truth and confronting facts. Everyone knows this.
Insensitive, off-topic, mean-spirited garbage from mornonic expats with nothing better to do with their time don’t exist in Korea. Everyone knows this.
A sad story, and a sad ending.
I certainly hope that the rumors were not the reason she fell victom to her depression, for surely she should have done what she could have to defend herself from any false accusations.
What ever happened to stars simply over-consuming drugs or alcohol to ease the depression/numb the pain until vital organs simply refuse to work properly ?
Is it too much to ask that the current suicide-syndrome sweeping the Korean entertainment world at least have the common decency to include some of the shittastic boy band members among its victims?
I second that #12
In a society where public perception is everything (a factor magnified hundredfold in her case because she’s a celebrity), it doesn’t surprise me (but saddens me and my family (mom was a fan)) that the negative rumors led to her demise. How far, then, should freedom of speech go in the Korean society? Should the hypothetical policy of prosecuting 악플러s be looked at with scorn for limiting free speech, or looked at in agreement with the public perception factor added in?
Wait a minute….
If I say/publish something disparaging – but 100% true – the ‘victim’ can take me to court for ‘damage to his reputation’. For example, a bad hagwon owner.
But someone famous can’t have the tar ripped outta some guy for saying something this malicious? She just sat on her hands? And she did nothing to get justice? I find it hard it reconcile that lack of action with the Korean tendency to go bananas over any perceived transgression.
I know that eating the still beating heart of an a$$h*le who started rumors about me would alleviate *my* depression. Why didn’t she go out and touch someone?
Freedom of speech is a good thing but the problem is that people will actually believe some of the crap that others write on the Internet without really looking into it.
The candle light vigils are a perfect sign. I have nothing against the right to say American beef is dangerous but to the one’s who believed it without even checking to see if there is any scientific basis behind it, those are the one’s that need to get their head straightened out.
Also I liked the actress but I have no sympathy for someone who can leave their kids like that. Especially in this case since the father had already given up being a dad to them.
#16, nevertheless, it is still a sad incident, considering that she was suffering mentally and had no help to turn to. Psychological treatment and help is woefully lacking in Korea and Koreans still view mental illness as something to hide and something to be ashamed of.
On that same day, she had to stop her shooting of a commercial. Actually, now that I think about it, she had many TV interviews where she was reaching out for help. There were so many people that were close to her who probably had a chance to do something only if they knew. She sent text messages like “if something happens to me, please take good care of my kids”. The last chance came on the night of her suicide when she had a drink with her manager. Her career spanned 20 years and she became Korea’s one of beloved actresses. Behind the scenes however, her life was filled with conflicts including an ugly divorce filled with rumors and innuendos after 3 years of marriage. With rumors about her alleged role in Ahn Jae Hwan’s suicide going around the internet, that was probably the last straw for her.
Lee Eun Joo, Jeong Da Bin, Uni, Choi Jin Sil, all these suicides had one thing in common. They all suffered from depression and stress due to internet rumors. It’s a perfect example that ugly mean words can kill.
#17. “It’s a perfect example that ugly mean words can kill.”
In Korea, “to be is to be seen,” to paraphrase Lacan. One of two things has to change: either the Korean over-emphasis on perception and reputation or the very nature of Internet itself.
I had a friend’s girlfriend suicide, at the tender age of 21. A lovely girl who might have had everything to live for. It still disturbs me, after 35 or so years.
I’m hearing a lot of chatter about enforcing an “Internet Real-Name policy”, anyone else hearing this stuff? Any links to articles calling for such legislation?
A sad, unfortunate, and ultimately, preventable death.
One area I think Korea really needs to do more on is to reduce the stigma of having depression or any other mental illness. It already has the highest Suicide rate in the OECD and seems to have the highest rate of celebrities/notable figures (prominent businessmen, etc.) committing suicide in the OECD, which in turn may validate the idea of suicide to vulnerable, particularly young, people.
Speaking from personal experience, it know what’s like to suffer from depression but at the same time I knew there were options (psychologists, psychiatrists, church leaders, etc.) I could go to if I feel I was losing the battle, and despite how bad I felt I knew I owed it to myself and loved ones to pursue any option that would help my condition. It’s a shame and waste when people can’t seem to find the strength to at least try other options before ending it all.
It’s a shame but it seemingly occurs more so here in Korea than in other countries, that many people will take the option of ending it all rather than seeking the help that they need. Reduce the stigma and save lives, Korea. Individuals also need to swallow their pride and accept when they need help.
I can definitely understand how a person gets to this point, it just seems such a waste and so preventable. ‘Face’ seems to play a large part in all this, which makes it all the more sad and regrettable. The poor kids she’s left behind will never come to terms with their mother leaving them behind.
Another area Korea really needs to clamp down on is this malicious, rumor-mongering by mean-spirited cowards behind computer screens. These people have little or nothing going on in their lives yet feel the need to draw attention to individuals they have no knowledge of and ruin their lives by gossip and innuendo.
I think this crap affects Korean celebrities so much here as Korea is such an inclusive society, that if the group turns on you there’s little you can do as everyone gets swept up in the mania and there’s little or no dissenting voices calling for calm (look at what happened in the Mad Cow insanity). These individuals pushed out of the group, lose their sense of worth in this society which is so closely tied to the group and feel they’ll never be able to restore their pride or ‘face’ so suicide becomes a viable option. Strangers become enemies, friends withdraw support, and these people are left with little or nothing to cling onto against the manic, angry mob. (Think of dog poop girl and other such Internet scandals, where these people had their lives’ threatened by mobs of faceless lunatics after minor incidents). Though as lupin_the_4th (#15) mentioned, why didn’t she seek legal actions against these faceless individuals? Perhaps, she didn’t have the strength left in her, I guess we’ll never know …
Celebrity suicide after celebrity suicide but this crap still continues. I think it partly has to with the philosophy that if you don’t know someone, they’re essentially a non-person to you and their feelings are of no consequence to you. Coupled with the fact of them being celebrities, people feel the need to chop them down a peg and make them feel bad as they envy them and their lifestyle. Australia’s renowned for its tall poppy syndrome, but it’s nothing like this place. At the core, Korea’s still a very cold society once one’s removed from friends and family, hopefully this can change in the future.
@14,
For what it’s worth, Choi apparently did file a police report, and now the police belatedly are tracking those fuckers down. They made one arrest already.
I grew up watching this woman. She must’ve snapped I guess. Sad….very sad.
You cant rule out someone coming into her apartment and killing her either though…however, unlikely.
I only have one question. Why did it take her mom two hours to get the door open? If my loved one was depressed and wasnt responding, I’d get someone right away if I cant break the door down myself. I am familiar with her apartment complex bc my parents live in Jamwondong as well. They all have a couple of gyungbis at all hours per building. She was prolly dead but if there was even a fraction of a chance of reviving her, two hours is way too long to hope for any chance of saving her. Maybe there was a chance? You cant blame the mother but if there was a missed opportunity, that would really be sad.
Anyone know if the stigma attached to a mental illness such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia is greater in Korea?
I can only imagine it is. And the limited experience I have in the Korean health care setting supports this.
This will ultimately drive those away who need help. And loved ones and friends will be unwilling to ask for involuntary assessment because it could be career or life ruining, despite the fact that it may improve their chance of survival.
Little known fact about the hilarious condition that is anorexia nervosa. It has around about 20% mortality rate. Half of those are from suicide the other half from cardiac problems due to electrolyte disturbance and cardiac myopathy. So good for comedic material, not so good to suffer from.
How is this related? Greater education regarding warning signs of mental illness and gretaer public awareness and acceptance of those with psychiatric illness will lead to better outcomes and fewer of these tragic deaths.
For those that say make calls of “cowardice”, you are fucking idiots! And it is attitudes that parallel yours that marginalise people with serious and often treatable or manageable psychiatric illness. When someone has one of these conditions they often can have greatly impaired cognition and loss a rational thinking.
Speaking to someone with a major depressive disorder, She was asked “what would you think if I gave you a compliment?”. She ansered that it would be for one of two reasons, 1. People always lie, and they say nice things just bhecause that is expected and they have to do it to fit in 2. I didn’t really think that and only was saying it because it was required of me in my position. She could think of no other reason, such as that it is the truth, that I like her, that she is a nice person that deserves compliments. To accuse someone with thought processes like that of cowardice for taking her own life is akin to blaming the victim for their situation.
Sonagi, I can understand how you can understand what she did. Just be thankful that you have your mental health a moderate degree of rationality. : )
Elcanguro, Sorry to here that, I hope what you are doing is helping you. If you are not Korean there is a sparsity of psychiatrists with clinical level English in Korea. But if you found one, good for you. If not I hope you have a strong support network and are in regular contact with your hometown psychiatrist. I only read your post as I finished mine, but I guess I echo many of your thoughts. However, remember that these disorders come in all kinds of strengths and acuteness of presentation. This plus the different level of support around you and in the community will lead to outcomes different to what you experienced.
iheartblueballs, there was. Others will know his name, but it was several years ago and they brought back the footage when u:Nee took her own life. Why would you wish death upon a group of people that have no interaction with you or effect on you?

sorry, slow posting response
Inkevitch – thanks for your comments. I’m doing fine, thanks. I’m pretty resilient and have suffered from depression on and off for half my life now, so know how to manage it and what to do if I notice myself heading down.
That said, I think Korea is beginning to learn more about mental illness and appreciate that it’s not just due to ‘mental weakness’ though it’s still probably a good 20 to 30 years behind the West and could do with a lot more initiative on the Government’s behalf to de-stigmatize mental illness and encourage people to seek help if needed. Korea could learn a lot from how Western countries have handled these issues in the last several decades. Though, even in the West there still is a stigma towards mental illness and seeking help, but it is gradually reducing over time.
I’d imagine the stigma towards bipolar disorder or schizophrenia is greater here than for ‘run of the mill’ depression as it is in the West. Depression, more or less, is fairly well understood and recognized by most people in the West these days and most people realize that it’s actual condition. Whereas, I think there’s still a lot of ignorance and prejudice towards bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and their sufferers, as people still still don’t know enough about these conditions.
The Japanese film director Itami Juzo also committed suicide after rumors of an affair emerged. He denied the affair in his suicide note. It was a tragic loss. His wife (Miyamoto Nobuko) was the star of most of his films, so one could speculate that his marriage and career were ruined. Before that, he was attacked and beaten by the Yakuza who were upset at his depiction of them as bullies in one of his satirical films (go figure).
Korea needs a professional mental health services industry and a cultural change within to not put a stigma into using that system.
There just are not enough mental life lines in Korean society…. that’s sad.

More information coming out. Choi jin Sil was on tranquilizers after her nasty divorce. She suffered from chronic depression. After the rumors about her hit the internet after Ahn Jae Hwan’s death, she sat for hours on end, reading internet posts – obsessively reading every words. Her use of tranquilizers increased, according to her mother. Apparently, her home page was full of nasty accusations from strangers which finally made her go over the edge. She told her mother she hated the world that hates her. Those were her last words.
Condolences to her family…Korea has one of the world’s highest suicide rates, and that should be a top gov’t priority. They can use these celebrities’ deaths in a respectful way to show that no one, not even the most privileged, is immune from depression and mental problems that lead to suicide.
Two things about this stood out. In the U.S. celebrities make careers out of bringing shame on themselves, quite the opposite of here. And I saw the funeral on TV with two rows of cameramen flanking the hall as the mourners came in–really invasive, and with the parade of the usual “talent” coming through it looked like they were exploiting her death for publicity. Another big cultural difference I guess.
Tranquilisers (benzodiazepines) should not be given for chronic depression. They are CNS depressants used for mood stabilisation. They are useful for anxiety disorders but NOT for depression. The only way I can see them being useful for depression is for helping with the sleep disturbances as a somnolescent.
On the other hand the 1st line anti-depressants, TCA’s and SSRI’s take 2-3 weeks to work properly and in the period it takes them to kick in, your mood may still be low but your motivation increased. This leads to a higher risk of suicide. So if you are on anti-depressants, be very careful for the first few weeks.
As CM posted, her perception was not congruent with reality. In cases like these hospitilisation can be a necessary and beneficial option.
I saw the funeral on tv as well. What a circus.
You ain’t “anybody” unless you were at the funeral.
Nothing says “mourning” like a lightning storm of camera flashes.
I was actually surprised with many of the “talents” in attendance,
because their acting for the camera at the funeral was worthy of
an Oscar or two.
#36,
I was mostly disgusted by the hundreds of reporters and cameramen demanding their pound of flesh.
something’s rotten in the world when people like this hang themselves, but people like George W. don’t.
I would argue then suicide actually takes courage and is not always cowardly.
anyway that’s my crazy two cents.

Nothing courageous about it pending the method – one flinch and it’s a done deal.
Cowardly and selfish.
” something’s rotten in the world when people like this hang themselves, but people like George W. don’t.

What a complete idiot you are, thank God I don’t have daily contact with you or idiots like you.
Please demonstrate how brave you are by “checking out” tonight,…….the world will be a better place.
She was a national icon, and it was shocking to hear of her death.
May she rest in peace.
If she would only be allowed to rest in peace. Even in her death, the ugly words keep appearing in her home page and elsewhere.
Not long ago there was an article on here about the high rate of Korean-American suicides among US college students. Everyone was talking about the stress of immigration, but it seems that the suicide rate among Koreans in Korea is just as high or perhaps higher.
Poor mental health facilities in Korea are probably a factor, but also the obsession with “chaemyun” probably has something to do with it, and I’d bet the Christian taboo against suicide probably has not had as much time to penetrate into society. One part of Korean culture that bothers me the most is the incredible sensitivity towards the perception of outsiders. Sitting around stewing about all the negative impressions that other people may or may not have about oneself is a great way to feel miserable, and a totally useless exercise.
40.
obviously you took me seriously. lol
who’s the idiot?
“Everyone was talking about the stress of immigration, but it seems that the suicide rate among Koreans in Korea is just as high or perhaps higher.”
It would be very easy to disprove that assertion. It’s not as if first generation Korean-Americans are the only people to have ever become immigrants.
Suicide because somebody wrote some nonsense on internet? Anyone for Brooklyn bridge?
Ms Choi was not a teenager. Nor a shy little virgin.
She was a shark. Ate a few men, including the baseball player.
I believe she killed herself.
Now, for a shark to die, some big fish had to force her to a corner.
That fish must be truly a powerful man. It may be a Japanese. A Yakuza boss, maybe.
Ms. Choi could have been a front from this boss. When Mr. Ahn borrowed $100 million from Choi (actually the boss’s money) and not paying back, the boss moved on him.
And, Choi had to make the money back up. Otherwise, her kids and her mother and her brother may get hit.
She exited.
Yeah, I believe the rumor to be true.
If it were nonsense, then Choi must have been really crazy.
Mistyping : $10 million instead of $100 million.
Nobody loans $100 million to a former actor. Not even a crazy person.
In a small country like Korea, a big country for the matter, entertainment business is run by gangstas.
Ms Choi was under a “benefactor” and she was his doll.
She may have escaped this dirty lifestyle when she married to Cho, the baseball player.
However, her lifestyle caught up with her when Cho hurt his arm. Ms Choi misbehaved (contacting her former benefactor?) and, Cho divorced the two-timing bitch.
Same old, same old. (Do not marry an actress or a model).
When she got back to Korea, she needed money, a lot of money, to get back the former fame that she lost when she escaped to Japan.
She started loan-sharking business. And, one of the customer was Mr.Ahn.
Like a flying insect, she could not go far away from the fire.
baduk you’re an idiot. Stop talking shit about a person that died. You are so pathetic. You don’t even know if its a fact or lies…no one does besides her. She was a great actress! R.I.P.
Baduk: “Suicide because somebody wrote some nonsense on internet? Anyone for Brooklyn bridge?”
Ring any bells?

And it’s not like this is an isolated case.
As for the rest of your posts and speculations: pure drivel.
I admit she was a decent actress.
But what is her legacy? Who is going to take care of her children?
Drinking till 11PM with four men. WTF!
Mother has the responsibility. To take care of her children. When a woman does not do her duty, she is no different than a man who fucks up.
Ms. Choi was a fuckup.
As a Korean, I strongly hold another Korean for his/her responsibility.
Killing herself was another fuckup.
She is just a mother of fuckups.
baduk is an expert on fuckups.
takes one to know one.
Baduk is just being the good Christian again. So pious and forgiving.
There there, don’t pick on baduk. Stupid people say stupid things because stupidity is their first language. While Baduk may sound like it’s speaking English, it’s nothing of the sort. It’s coming from a place where gossip magazines is it’s religion and the truth is a 2nd language.
