This Won’t Help Korea-Vietnamese Ties

Seems Vietnam has its own low-quality foreign criminals, too:

The Korean community in Vietnam is on the high alert over possible eruption of anti-Korean sentiment following the news that police arrested a South Korean man suspected of murdering his Vietnamese girlfriend, embassy officials said.

Vietnamese media reported that Kim Ki-jong, 26, is suspected of having strangled his girlfriend, stuffing her in a suitcase and setting her corpse on fire. Police found the body Thursday in the outlying district of Cau Giay.

Kim came to Vietnam in December and met the 21-year-old victim in May to learn Vietnamese from her and fell in love with her. She was a student, majoring in Korean language at Hanoi National University.

Not a Korean Wave moment, and not the first time Koreans have gotten the Vietnamese upset at perceived disrespect, although this incident obviously goes beyond simple disrespect.

You’ve probably been in Korea too long to recognize that “foreigner criminals” is Konglish for “foreign criminals.”

    alfjeoiwaj another re-registration.

There have been some big stories this past year out of Korea of Korean men murdering and abusing their Vietnamese wives. I’d imagine that gets some attention in Vietnam, right? I don’t think the country enjoys having to export its women to other countries and other countries’ men.

Since I’ve been married (to my Vietnamese wife) this is the gist of the comments that I’ve heard from the Korean side:

“She must like Korea pretty well, right? Koreans and Vietnamese are very similar after all.”

This is the gist of the comments that I’ve heard from the Vietnamese side:

“I used to think, from Korean dramas, that Koreans were really cool, but then I met some and they were very different from the dramas.”

    Just sayin’…

Hey Iceberg, I didn’t know you got married, was it recently? Anyway, congratulations.

If I was Vietnamese I’d be offended at the the places in Seoul that claim to serve pho :)

    Last July…and thanks.

The pho restaurants in Seoul aren’t bad…though not really anything close to real pho. At least not the pho you’ll find in Hanoi.

Ah, you got married during my year-long Marmot break.

Pho was one of my favorite meals in L.A. The Korean version is missing everything except beef and water, really bland.

Pho (the real version) is good breakfast food.

By “last July”, I meant July of this year.

    Interesting anecdote:

A Vietnamese friend of mine (American citizen) recently visited Vietnam with her sister and her sister’s friend who is Korean.

This Korean friend turned out to be an ugly Korean. She continually put down Vietnam, bragging about how much better Korea was, wolfed down all the food before anyone else could get their chopsticks on them and so forth. By the end of the trip, my Vietnamese friend was totally disgusted.

OK, it’s not murder, but our Vietnamese friend did say she had harbored some ill feelings about Koreans before she met us.
