Wonder Girls ‘Girl Group to Watch’

by Robert Koehler on September 3, 2008

Britain’s Virgin Media has named the Wonder Girls as a girl group to watch:

Richard Branson’s media group said on its website, “Where Japan have J-pop, Korea have K-pop, and these five young ladies are leading exponents of the genre. Attempts to expand into China and a recent tour of America hint at plans for international breakthrough.”

They must have liked the Slim Panda commercial.

I’m sure Metro has something to say about this.

That’s awesome. Is that the “So Hot” remix in the background?

On a sidenote, I just noticed while browsing Youtube today that the New Kids on the Block have reunited… still singing disposable pop-garbage and removing items of clothing while surrounded by sexilicious girls…

This is really nothing. Prepubescent kids half their age are encouraged to dance and cavort in a grossly sexually suggestive manner on network TV as the audience and adult participants cheer them on and heap praise upon them. Not only is the behavior overtly sexual, the lyrics they are encouraged to sing are as well, for example, Jang Yoon-Jeong’s 어머나!

They’re already too old for Gary Glitter and they have no discernible talent. Can’t see them expanding beyond the Asian pre-teen niche. North Ameria has their own treacle pop sensations.

They are Korea’s Spice Girls…

… and they won’t last very long…

My wife made a hillarious observation the other day watching a Korean pop idols variety show. Her observation about the girl and boy groups on the show:

“The girls are all jumping around. The boys are just standing around
begging.”

The spice girls were all in their mid twenties when they came out. These girls are in middle school.

Korean pop, and Asian pop in general, doesn’t tend to capture very wide audiences outside of Asia. Martial arts films, and Korean dramas even, are the exception. But with an aggregate population of over 2 billion, not even including that of India, does it have to?

The Wondergirls are clumsy, talentless waifs in clownish make-up who couldn’t carry a tune it a bucket. Their songs exhibit a lack of any creativity. They are derivative, formulaic, and insulting.

In other words, they are perfect for today’s pop music scene.

Never mind, NES…what am I doing talking to a bag of gulgabaegi anyway?
