I guess Sonagi was right. People in China can protest. They even have an official application process.
Wait, did I hear that right? They were arrested for petitioning to protest in a designated area?
That’s pretty fucked up. WTF is the point of designated protest area then? (besides appeasing the critical international observers, you smartasses :-D)
Yes, that is apparently true (#1), however, it seems to be more of a sly way to identify people with grievances and either grind their complaints down with official paperwork or simply detain or arrest them under any number of “legal” means, thus allowing faceless bureaucrats a way to save face by claiming everything done has been done in a legal manner.

Exactly. I forgot to add the sarcasm tags…
This is what Mao would do constantly in his famous crackdowns.
He asked the Chinese people if anyone had any improvements or changes they would like to make.
When people spoke up, he had them arrested, locked away, or quietly murdered.
Illegal act of taking peasant land for development are done at local provincial government level that not even CCP central government can deal with it effectively..Although I feel sad for these old folks but unfortunately it will take more protests, crack downs and deaths to become achille’s hill for CCP. This grievence has impacted CCP more than any other religious cult like Falun Gong or separtist groups.
As a side note, I cannot help myself to notice so many people in China are preoccupied by olympic and I don’t think it is good thing when its done. Pundits are already predicting economy in China will tank after the olympic which will affect Korea and other economy with strong tie to China.

#2,
What’s fucked up is that China promised that it would improve the human rights condition in order to get the right to host the Olympics…and the IOC believed them.
Well, at least London got to host in 2012…
@Siddhartha
Weren’t these old ladies Beijing residents though? Who’s responsible for razing their houses, and which branch made the human rights dick move by sending 70 year olds to labor camp? On a personal note, I love how they actually called it ‘re-education camp’
I have a feeling Chinese men’s soccer team may be joining the old ladies in the very near future after the fiasco of a match with Belgium.
#5 It was also a tactic used by Pol Pot & the Khmer Rouge- bring people to a forum and tell them they can speak freely without fear of harm. Those who criticized the numerous problems quietly disappeared, never to be heard from again.
The Chinese government, instead of the fantasy of ‘opening up’ and allowing more freedom, have used the games to become more arrogant and as justification for some of their iron fisted policies.
Sending 2 old ladies to prison for applying to protest in a “legally sanctioned” zone is one world-class dicktator move. I hope more people become aware of this and less apt to pat China on the back for a ‘job well done’!

In this case, private developers with help of friend at CCP jacked them and it probably done without any formal agreement or even worse outright ignoring it. I think the labor/re-education camp is better sounding than “jail” thus no one know what labor or re-education these old ladies will get.
LMAO!! cannot agree with you more!! Since you mentioned it, here is poem about them:
珍爱生命 远离男足
吸烟有害健康,看男足有害生命
Cherish your health, stay way from Chinese men’s soccer.
Smoking cause bad health, watching Chinese men’s soccer cause damage to life.
看英超要钱 看男足要命
男足不是病 踢起来真要命
Watching British Premier league cost money, watching Chinese men’s soccer cost life(dreadful)
Chinese men’s soccer is not a disease, it is extremely dreadful (cost life) when it kicks
They were taken into protective custody after a group of drunken US GIs tried to put them on the roof of a taxi and gang rape them.
Was that before or after they released a giant radioactive sludge monster into the Han River?
