Uhm Ki-woong, 36, a businessman

by Dram_man on August 6, 2008

in Asides, South Korea

With a tip of the hat to the Wall Street Journal’s Best of the Web, I have to share this paragraph from a dispatch about the anti-American/Bush/Lee/Beef/Whatever protest:

“I don’t have anti-U.S. sentiment. I’m just anti-Bush and anti-Lee Myung-bak,” said Uhm Ki-woong, 36, a businessman who was wearing a mask and hat like other demonstrators in an apparent attempt to conceal his identity from authorities.

It seems like  Uhm Ki-woong, 36, a businessman did a great job at concealing his identity. Good job  Uhm Ki-woong, 36, a businessman! The story of  Uhm Ki-woong, 36, a businessman reminds me of a similar incident a few years ago by an American company here:

Apple Computer raised the stakes in the local MP3 player market by announcing yesterday that it will lower the price of its iPod only in Korea….Local representatives even asked the media to “keep quiet” about the price cuts, saying that headquarters feared opposition from other Asian countries.

Yeah, “keep quiet” like don’t announce it to the press or anything.

Ed, you’re not innocent either. It’s a shame nobody can spell anymore. It’s a wonder how I get through the day without showing up at all of your offices with a rifle.

Just pointing it out budy…

Well, I get it. Uhm doesn’t mind getting his name put out. He just doesn’t want the name connected to any hi-jinx that might be captured on film.

I gotta find some way to work that damn text editor on my Mac.

Dictionaries make much better spelling aids than rifles. Less fun perhaps… but nonetheless.

Now I really don’t understand what’s wrong with you, Dram. If you’re posting from a Mac, and use Safari 3.0 or higher, you benefit from automatic spell checking in HTML textarea fields. Words — like “simular” — which the program judges may be spelled wrong get highlighted by a red squiggle under the word. There’s no magic or special skill required — it’s built right in.
