I’d heard that the Dokdo rocks were small, but I’d never seen them on a human scale before. Now, I understand why Koreans are so worried that Japan will steal them. I hope the thief in the photo above was apprehended.

I thought I recognized this as the outside of Penn Station. I used to work in that building - 2 Penn Plaza, and let me tell you, nutcases like this are such a common sight there that they are guaranteed to be ignored.

    1. When will America stop throwing money into Africa and Iraq and realize that the world has REAL problems?

    2. “Mommy, why is Michael Jackson stealing islands?”
    “I don’t know. Keep walking.”.

    3. Unfortunately, the Koreans failed to realize that Dokdo ranks in the typical American’s priorities somewhere between getting enough niacin and learning semaphore.

    4. This is a mistranslation, my friend. Instead of “island,” you should have “pile of rocks not worth flipping a coin over.”

    5. You know what this needs? Jazz hands.

    @#18, Tripod.

Yes, it is a cutout. The article identifies it as such and if you clink on the link to original, there is another image of the same cutout in Times Square.

    I cast votes for #4, #8, and #19-2.

oh, it’s even more ironic than that . . . it’s an island “purchased” with beads from a tribe that didn’t actually own the land. The Dutch paid the Carnarsees, Brooklyn natives, but it sounds like the Weckquaesgeeks actually living on the land weren’t were pretty upset, and spent the next couple years at war with the Dutch over the deal (See James Lowen, “Lies My Teacher Told Me, pg. 122 or Wallace, Wallace, and Wallechinsky “Significa” pg. 326)

    #60,

Well, that’s were the correlation ends. Manhattan is prime real estate –the Native Americans really got ripped off– whereas Dokdo is a couple of rocks in the middle of the sea.

“Looks like a cardboard cutout to me (look at the reflection on foot…Seems too glossy to be real).”

I looked around the outlines. And it does look two-dimensional.

Regardless, this is stupid. Dokdo is under Korean control, all those protests and demonstrations are a waste of time. They’re better off trying to find more historical evidance if they want to legalize their claims. Rather then screaming around and annoying people.
