In a recent Chosun Ilbo column, Victor Cha, Director of the Asian Studies program at Georgetown University, discusses Korea’s destructive domestic politics.
Victor is a keen observer of affairs on the Korean peninsula, having served a stint as Director for Asian Affairs in the White House’s National Security Council. He may have had an under appreciated role in putting the U.S. on a track to seek a diplomatic solution on the issue of nukes in North Korea (although the jury is still out on how effective that policy will eventually be). He also had a column in Chosun a year ago that discussed Korea’s flawed approach to host the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (which pretty much echoed what was said in the ‘hole and Kommersant, but with a lot less sarcasm).

Their goal is the destruction of the Korean economy so that they can take power again. In other words, if they can’t get the repeat of 1997, they’ll make it happen on their own. And they’re ready to pounce on the next big issue of their choosing.
They are a minority, but unfortunately, they are a big minority with a large loud voice. And the president is gun shy, afraid of touching off more big riots. Instead of concentrating on the economy and liberalizations he mentioned in his election promises, he’s too busy putting out fires. That makes him a lame duck weak president. So far, they’ve succeeded in putting him where they want him to be in.
They control alot of the media which is what counts.
Interesting article, thanks for the link.
Actually LMB is going ahead with privatization in the media sector and this ultimately should be beneficial.
Things are happening without much fanfare.
MBC-KBS attack on the government is daily now. The bias at the same time, is also very subtle.
That article says the same old thing that we’ve already known for the past month. Korea’s destroying itself over a power struggle.
Sorry we’re not a bunch of pathetic geeks sitting around watching dragonball z.
In this country people actually want things other than cartoons and video games.
Now I see why SBS is not criticizing the Lee administration like MBC & KBS. lol
