Seoul Food in the NYT

by Robert Koehler on July 21, 2008

NYT travel guy Matt Gross was in Seoul, where he ate very, very well. He also got to meet Daniel Gray of SeoulEats.com and Joe McPherson of ZenKimchi.com.

The story seemed well-written enough. But a little strange, seeing everyone wearing winter coats in the picture. I guess the editor held it a while before running the story.

Yeah, it was way back around the end of November.

I wonder why this New York Times writer’s article was so well-written, full of verisimilitude, and engaging — and why he didn’t have to break, or threaten to break, anyone’s face.

It mentions December early on in the article.

I was well jealous reading this from Australia.. but he missed out as he never ate in a restaurant outside Seoul.

It got a bit overdone by the end of it but definitely a good piece. And how could you disagree with his characterization of sannakji? Great stuff.

No flying chopsticks either.

Nice article.

I lament the fact that NYT covers Korean issues in much more depth than the LAT despite the fact that LA has a much larger Korean population.

Wang,
LA times gets KA perspectives better..sometimes getting too close to KA association in LA and outlet of (English version version) 한인회 IMHO…

Yeah, well, Matt Gross isn’t the next Ernest Hemingway, and he only stayed in Seoul long enough to eat some grub, unlike a certain brilliant young author who’s slumming at a local university to bring some real world-class international talent to that podunk town that passes for the capital of an OECD country.

There’s thousands of places to eat in Seoul, nothing he said here
really stuck me as impressive. I am glad that Korean food is
getting more press though, I have been to Japan a few times after
living in Korea, and I am rarely impressed.
