I don't have a favorable opinion of The King And The Clown, too. I thought it was dry, flat, empty movie that didn't live up to its box-office hype in any sense.

There is a recent documentary on Koreans in the Vietnam War that I recall watching somewhere and would recommend. The film interviews a few Korean soldiers who fought in Vietnam as well as a few Vietnamese villlagers who survived their encounters with Korean soldiers at the time. The documentary is produced by Koreans and its outlook is...let's say that it's "honest." No revisionism whatsoever, nothing that I'd call overtly apologetic either... just a few rather bleak interviews with a few soldiers. I forget what the name of the documentary is.. I'll go look it up later.

I too have my doubts about this movie's portrayal of Korean troops. The current film trend on Korean military is mostly negative, with the exception of Heaven's soldiers.

It doesn't comfort me that the director is the same guy who directed that stupid movie with a "flower boy" as one of the leads.

lirelou,

Given that the director also directed The King and the Clown, Korea's first widely released GAY film, I'd think it's save to say that he's left leaning.

I predict that the Korean troops will be depicted as mentally confused, emotionally scarred, lonley, guilt ridden, and "counting the days" troops torn from the shigol to reluctantly fight other Asians in an imperialistic war... just my opinion... ;)

Ever read "Vietnam above the Treetops" by John F. Flanagan? Very nice account of the ROK troops while he was attached to the Tiger Division.

you know how ALL vietnamese war movies are.

These guys WILL be baby murderers.

The main dude in the movie, he's gonna die.

They'll repeat "It was a mistake", for infinity.

Vietnamese in Vietnam, or US Vietnamese people, all they ever say is,

"Vietnamese war was a mistake".

I think they as a people made a mistake.

Passions does raise a point, but a hot Korean in Vietnam during the war is not as unbelievable as it sounds. There was good money to be had entertaining the troops, usually paid from official and unofficial unit funds. Filipino bands abounded, and there were even American and an Australian band or two, though the American bands tended to be moonlighting GIs. Considering that the Koreans were concentrated from Binh Dinh province up to Quang Nai and Quang Tri provinces (ROK 9th and Capital "Tiger" Divisions, ROKMC "Blue Dragon" Bde, and ROK AF Advisory unit), it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Korean bands with hot young ladies were brought in for their entertainment. Considering that the ROKs have been painted in the leftist press as baby murderers, when in fact they were one of the most disciplined forces in country, it will be interesting to see how they are portrayed in this film.
