…but please don’t get worked up over one of your citizens getting killed by friendly NK soldiers.
The Hanky has this advice for Korean citizens concerning yesterday’s killing of ROK citizen Park Wang-ja by North Korean soldiers:
We in the South must not.. respond too emotionally.
That is rather rich from a rag that has produced emotion-laden screeds like this and this on on the anti-American beef protests.

get over this beef crap, ok? you come off as petty as you say the koreans come off.
ok?
1. It’s about proportion, pawi. That’s the point a lot of us are trying to make, even though we feel like we are trying to teach pigs how to read a wristwatch.
Nice apologetic tone from the Hanky.
12 July 2008, 1943 hours, OMN is still silent (unless I missed something).
The Hankey has been a one trick whore (or is it pony? Naw, it’s whore) since I began reading it in the early nineties. The truth has never stood in the way of The Message.
Remember:
you don’t need to teach koreans anything. good to see you calling koreans pigs. is your wife/girlfriend a pig?
koreans don’t need to live their lives thinking about how you might react. afterall, who are you?
just some english ‘teacher’?
Actually, to put it into perspective, why are these tours happening at all? They are stage-managed to give Southerners the nostalgic warm and fuzzies while pouring cash into KJI’s bank account. That’s already obscene before this poor women got shot. President Lee should use this as an excuse to pull the plug on it.
And the Hankie intones: “While an inquiry does needs to take place, it at least appears to have been an accidental occurrence.” Accidental?

I went to Geumgangsan the weekend before KJI fired missiles into the
Sea of JapanEast Sea, the launch which was considered unsuccessful for some reason. If I’d bought the expensive lunch instead of the cheap one, maybe he’d have had the resources to achieve a successful launch.Hey there big P. Didn’t see you around here for a while.
The guy who tried to replace you didn’t do so hot a job: got banned three times, under three different usernames.
Pawi, it’s called a simile – “A figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared, often in a phrase introduced by like or as, as in “I need you like I need a hole in the head.’”
Roboseyo I assume you mean swlee, eh? Yeah he was as subtle as a sledgehammer.
Andy, it’s safe for South Koreans to be overly emotional when dealing with the US because they can almost always count on Americans to respond in a rational manner…whereas North Korea’s reaction is somewhat less predictable.
#4 My bad, dda!
“They are stage-managed to give Southerners the nostalgic warm and fuzzies while pouring cash into KJI’s bank account.”
Given that SK investments in NK are guaranteed by the SK government, you have to wonder it’s also not a scheme to bail out near bankrupt South Korean companies.

Could you call that the “Great Circle of Slick” ?

Isn’t that another way of describing a “child-parent relationship”.
Someone (might have been here) said that the principal difference between a child and an an adult is that an adult understands that their actions have consequences. If anyone else knows a more distilled summation, I would love to hear it.
If the above is so, the downside is that Korea doesn’t reflect well on the US’ parenting skills. Perhaps some tough love is in order.
Plain delusional. Do the editors of the Hanky get their drugs directly from the Norks?
#14,
Yes, it’s a circle jerk.
Before things go too far down a certain road, I wish to point out that I was ragging on the Hanky and not the general SK population.
(You can count this as one of my “house whitey” moments.)
@9
Thanks for saving me the chore of edumacating the resident nobi, Bipolar.
16. The Hanky junkies don’t have to go North……
http://www.rjkoehler.com/2008/.....drug-ring/
The BBC is reporting that the Norks are putting responsibility onto the South and demanding an apology.
17. I know what a circle is. And you’re the jerk.
What’s the point of comments on this thread except sarcasm?
This place is unbehfuckinlievable.
This one went south suddenly. Why is this line of “discussion” any different/worse than any previous?
You are right Sonagi, North Korea claims it was all South Korea’s fault and demand an apology!!
Are South Koreans really going to take this murder and insult lying down like dogs?
The Hankyoreh editorial is also a load of shameful, sniveling rot.
THERE SHOULD BE CANDLELIGHT PROTESTS OVER THIS MURDER!
Literally. I agree. My bet… won’t happen.
#25
“Are South Koreans really going to take this murder and insult lying down like dogs?”
Uuuhhh….Yep!
“17. I know what a circle is. And you’re the jerk.

?
All news is equal. But some news is more deserving of emotional, absurd, hysteria than others.
Look, this may sound like paranoia but, papers like Hankyoreh are believed to be fronts for North Korean mouth pieces. Lot of Koreans believe that. Not only are they anti American, they are also anti South Korean. They are communistic in nature, and nothing that they publish should be taken seriously.
Unfortunately, the left in the last 10 years has slowly taken over South Korea’s media, education, and other institutions. And we see this result today.
Something has to be done to counter them, but what?
@21
Only an apology?!
What happened to Nork brinkmanship?
BTW, anyone know where’s the victim’s body?
#30,
The main problem with North Korea is that it is run by a despotic leader, not that it is communist.
jesus christ, how many fucking posts can you have about american beef?
According to this NY TImes article, Lee Myung Bak is increasingly getting cornered on his hard line policies toward the North, by the Progressives who want SK to be less hard line, and United States’ new North Korean policies.
It’s great timing for the United States to take North Korea off the terror list and virtually give into them, just at a time a new SK hardline policy toward the North began to take place with the new administration.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07.....korea.html
jesus christ, how many fucking protests can you have about american beef?
Okay! @ 33&35.
@ 31 BTW, anyone know where’s the victim’s body?
There was a report that it was sent to a hospital in Seoul last night I believe.
LMAO, grown men and women still crying about high school kids who were protesting.
The lack of maturity by posters is overwhelming. But then nerds always were oblivious to growing up.
North Koreans shot a helpless running halmonei in the back… twice… at a touristic resort… and now they’re demanding an apology from the South?
But again, it doesn’t matter how many Koreans (North and South) have to die – let’s stop 2MB and fight the American beef!
It’s strange how mostly foreigners care about Korea and human lives. It doesn’t seem to bother common South Koreans at all. At least not the ones I talked to today. They didn’t seem to be interested at this case at all.
I’d like to take the Hanky and cut it up into a toilet paper roll so I can wipe my ass with. Such a newspaper is only worthy for my ass crap to read.
High school kids? WERE protesting? Check the top news story at the Hankyoreh. Hint: It’s not the shooting of an unarmed tourist.
BTW, the most rec’d comment at Naver of all places is calling for a mass candlelight vigil at Geumgangsan, noting that not a single person has died of Mad Cow in Korea.
#38 “LMAO, grown men and women still crying about high school kids who were protesting.
The lack of maturity by posters is overwhelming. But then nerds always were oblivious to growing up.”
Umm, Are sure you have not accidentally fallen into the wrong comment section?
What?! Where’s the drama in that?!
The Norks ain’t playing this right. That well-deserved apology is less likely to come if you’re not holding the body.
Ahhhh…ummm…errrr…I got nothin
If the shooting was done by one soldier, there may be a chance he was executed for giving dear leader a headache. The irony being that even if he was news of it won’t be released for fear of losing face and having to admit guilt.
There was the possibility she was a spy, but at age 53 this is more than unlikely.
Another possibility is that (and I have no idea how this would work) this is Dear Leader’s plan to put extra pressure on the blood traitor LMB. Excuse me if this seems wrong, but wouldn’t the shooting of an unarmed tourist be a violation of the armistice?
“Relations between North and South are being put to a new test, having already soured since the inauguration of the new administration. The situation is such that a misstep could make relations lose their way. The greatest effort needs to be made to use this as an opportunity to turn a bad situation into a better one. The North holds the key. It must take this incident most seriously.”
Wow, clearly this is all LMB’s fault for souring relations. And it appears that NK is not taking it seriously as it is demanding an apology for the actions of a CIVILIAN when one of its SOLDIERS shot her. I get the impression from this that relations have improved in the last 11 years. But doesn’t NK still regularly test missiles? Isn’t Keasong being propped up by SK companies and SK govenment funds?
I think either I am stupid or completely misinformed or thgis editorial lacks is suffering from derealisation.
#44, you mean more of an armistice violation than sending hundreds of terrorists to kill the President, mushroom farmers, and unarmed tree-trimmers?
What is the headline, sonagi? My guess:
“One Hundred Billion Invisible Protesters Brave the Rain to Cry for LMB’s Impeachment” (photos inside)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/2.....661875563/
to #34: The “One Race” (Hanky) newspaper is no more socialist or progressive, not to mention communist, than North Korea is a democracy, peoples’ or otherwise. There is no indigenous leftist movement on the Korean peninsula, south or north, though one can hear an occasional exploitation of socialist rhetoric or terminology. Korean culture is racist, fascist, and xenophobic to the core, and the differences south and north are merely ones of slight degree, not kind.
My guess is that either her intent was to get into North Korea for some as of yet unknown reason or she was completely disoriented. Let’s see if the facts come out about her background as well as what she was doing the night of the incident.
http://joongangdaily.joins.com.....id=2892225
Well, this says it all, but the average Korean still won’t get it, and the next thing that happens and is used for the same political driven purpose, you will see the robotic masses back at city hall with their little candles.
Never-ending cycle of stupidity.
I was reading The Korea Times last night, and got a kick out of this sentence: “Park was the first South Korean to be shot dead during the tour”. Have others been shot, but just not killed???
#39.
The Hani isn’t even worthy of wiping my ass!
Never let anyone say again that Keumgangsan is not an authentic North Korean experience.
46. There’s an armistice? I don’t think that’s possible as North and South are still technically at a state of war – civil war, I might add, since neither actually recognizes the other’s legitimacy. Am I wrong?
44. My gf says she saw this on KBS and that there were 2 bullet wounds, one through the breast (nonfatal) and the other through the heart, which implies 2 shooters.
NK guns and rifles have only one bullet each?
do you believe KBS on selective issues?
children, if you think Left in Korea is horse shit,
How come you think Left in America is any good?
You
defy
logic.
Left in America is wayyy different than the Left in Korea.
no, it’s not.
same isolationism.
same protectionism.
same stupid economics.
same robin-hood strategy.
same socialism in its very core.
same, same, same.
Umm, no they’re not. The Left in the US (and somewhat in Canada) reviles Communism, praises unionism, and protects freedoms of speech.
The Left in Korea worships Communism, encourages violent unions, and brow-beats anyone who disagrees with them.
#50- I don’t see how police discovering minutes of meetings disclosing the intentions of democracy leaders is any kind of a story. First, of course we want to destroy LMB. He’s the devil. All resources must be allocated to bring him down. He doesn’t care whether our children get mad cow disease or not. He’s going to privatize everything and everything will cost double. Second, this story was published in the joogangdaily. They are all liars and this story is probably a lie even though its true. LMB is just like Cheon Du Wan, Park Chung Hee, Hitler, and Stalin. He and his rich friends want to get rich, while all the middle class and poor people go without health insurance, lose their jobs, and our eventually beaten and tortured and banned from international travel. You say people who protest the LMB are stupid, but would you make such criticism if we were protesting against Hitler? You must not understand Korean culture.
knox = pawi? what a maroon. ‘democracy leaders’? give me a fucking break pal.
The wankyoreh really are a shameless bunch of hypocritic scumbags.
Ah, the good ol’ standby, ‘you must not understand Korean culture’ line.
LMB is Hitler, Stalin? When he has concentration camps like your ‘friend’ up north, then that’ll be true.
Well, you must not understand ‘Western’ mind. Come back here when you do, okay?
Knox..him not vewwy bwight…
(yes, I meant to misspell those words.)
This is beyond sad. I hope SK gets smart and cuts off all aid!
Knox is obviously writing parody, and it’s very good parody.

I think #61 is supposed to be a parody of the typical leftist agitator nonsense rather than a valid attempt at explaining anything.
It might make me laugh if only there was not so much ignorance going around.
Elgin, I agree. It is hopefully a parody, but at the same time people actually believe some absolutely outrageous BS here in Korea.
I had a highschool student tell me not long ago that ‘LMB is crazy man, he loves Japan, and is going to sell Dokdo to the Japanese’. When you’ve got idiots spreading that kind of anti-LMB propaganda around Pres. Lee must be doing something right.
It seems that they read something on the internet or get an unsolicited message on their Cell and they automatically believe it.
#66,
Kind of like people spreading rumors that Obama is Muslim?
…not that I see why it would matter if he was.
Yeah, it wouldn’t be a big deal at all. But the last non-Protestant Pres was JFK and he was merely Catholic.
“The Dumberswt Generation” is a new book out by a 49 year old professor who laments the fact that young people in America are just plain ignorant etc. It seems that one could include Korea and Thailand(my friend in Thailand says the same thing about young Thais)
#59,60 – The Left in the US, Canada, and most European countries also tend not to promote ethnic nationalism. Unlike a certan country that shall remain nameless.
71, global, I suppose you missed out on the European socialists passing the equivalent of grandfather clauses to citizenship, denying citizenship to a particular group, say from Africa and the Middle East, who were born in their hospitals, and on their soils.

Sweden and Ireland, I am almost sure of.
That,
is not nationalism?
Get real.
It’s exactly like the time I pointed out that US AfAms are cast away into sitcoms.
Yeah, educators in the US are famous for teaching “racial purity” propaganda in schools. Just ask people like wjk and pawi.
How are people of African descent treated by Koreans wjk? Please fill me in on this.
At least the majority of Americans, even “white” ones admit there are racial problems in the US.
At least the Irish and Swedes aren’t hyopcrites about it like the Koreans. Not that that it makes it right.
I don’t hear them going on about how kind they are to foreigners and act totally opposite, like Koreans do. How biracial people/children are treated in Korea proves my point.
As for the whole beef thing pawi, why don’t you get your draft dodging ass over here to Korea and find out for yourself what it’s like?
Like the ROK, Sweden does require at least one parent to hold Swedish citizenship, but Ireland until recently had one of the world’s most lenient birthright citizenship laws. Not only were children born in Ireland automatically citizens, but their parents were immediately eligible to apply for citizenship. Seeking a path to EU citizenship, immigrants from elsewhere in Europe flocked to Ireland to give birth. Ireland then passed legislation to restrict birthright citizenship to children with at least one citizen or permanent resident parent. Ireland’s laws are still more liberal than the ROK’s, which doesn’t really have green cards. Why should a child born of tourists, students, or those without proper visas be given citizenship when the parents have not established a permanent domicile in the country? The US needs a citizenship law like Ireland’s, but it will never happen.
as expected, wjk has singled handedly defeated any argument stating that ROKorea Left is any different than Liberal Left politics of the world.
You didn’t say wjk was wrong.
You tried to provide excuses for the left.
There’s no difference.
They’re all fundamentally xenophobic commies. Who believe in tax, tax, and more tax.
You’re wrong.
The traditional rallying cry of the Western Socialists is the “Internationale”.
Korean leftists, on the other hand, are inspired by the “Hankyoreh”.
Fundamentally different, they are.
Doesn’t anyone wonder that pawi says goodbye and wjk just pops up to take his place?
I smell socks.
The picture is revealing every day:
“When I looked at the direction where the gunshots were heard, there was one person collapsed and three soldiers ran out of a forest and touched the person with their feet as if trying to see if that person is alive,” Yonhap quoted 23-year-old Lee In-bok, a college student, as saying.
Three soldiers shot her from siege, hidden in the woods. No one has heard warnings or shouts. The shouts were heard AFTER the shots, meaning that there could be no warning at all or maybe she saw them in the last moment.
More to it, they didn’t try to help her – mind the way they checked whether she was alive – “touched” her body with their feet. I would use “kicked” her body rather…
#52 – Sure, there has been other accidents like this one, but not lethal. I mean, not a tourist that went there legally was shot without any reason.
Many tourists have been “advised” to watch their tongue. In 1999 one south Korean ajummah was detained for 40 days for merely implying to her guide that she would love to see him again one day in Seoul.
Also in Kaesong some low-level managers have been bullied and physically abused by north korean officials (not worth mentioning cuz it’s a daily event).
But of course there’s been many victims of other kinds.
Remember the North Korean spies that still operate on South Korean soil? A brisk look at the statistics:
“The North has committed 309 cases of provocations including the infiltration of armed agents into the South since the 1970s. Since the 1990s alone the North infiltrated such agents via sea and land in 15 cases.”
I’m not sure whether we can have an accurate number of all South Korean, Japanese, American and other foreign victims of this terror, not excluding unarmed soldiers, civilians, women and even small children. And the victims inside North Korea are tens of millions at least (if not the whole nation?).
As proven by the association of North Korean defectors, the “accident” with Mrs Park was likely to be inspired by KJI himself, because the soldiers that shot her dead couldn’t have been ordinary infantrymen, quoting defectors:
“Average North Korean infantrymen do not have orders to aim at civilians, and they cannot independently decide to shot a South Korean civilian, which would always erupt into a political issue.”
“”In order to strike the target with an AK-47 rifle, a person needs to be within a 100 meter distance. Such a technique surpasses the standard of average North Korean infantrymen.” Such a statement gave credence to the possibility of the shooting having been over a short distance, in contrast to the North’s explanation.”
“In the case of the Mt. Geumgang garrison, each post and army affairs office is directly connected. Whether or not to shoot a South Korean cannot be single-handedly decided even by commanders of the army corps and other commanders.”
Case closed…
