Brian in Suncheon is getting some unwanted attention some particularly enthusiastic netizens bent on tracking him down to correct his errant views.
Most netizens are fairly reasonable and pleasant human beings and a real credit to Korean society — it’s because of them that Korea has the vibrant online culture for which the country is rightly famous. Unfortunately, there are elements who are under the mistaken impression that online and offline intimidation represents 네티즌의 힘. I just got an email from someone — a Korean, I believe — expressing concern that the current situation in Korea resembles China’s Cultural Revolution. It doesn’t, obviously, but it’s incidents like this that unfortunately make it appear so sometimes.
Keep your chin up, Brian.

Then read the young netizen comments.
They think he’s crazy. They think he and other foreign bloggers are insulting Korea.
I didn’t see any insult or any put
downs of Koreans, other than the truth.
Most of the commentators probably didn’t even bother try to understand what his message was. Closed minds, closed eyes, and closed brains.
Keep writing, Brian.
Afterwhile, you gain tough skin. Iron face(철면피).
Korean youth do not know anything outside of Korea. Their education system is similar to that of Nazi Germany.
They are afraid of people like you who are brave enough to open their eyes and let them see the world is a bigger place and nationalism eventually hurts them and the rest of the world.
Fight on, brother. Educate Korean youth. Let the blind see.
This anti-American beef again brought out Korean Commies whose eventual goal is to chase the US influence out of Korea and (this is a part they are blind of) subjugate Korea under the Chinese enfluence.
If that happens, China, whose income is about 1/20 of Korea, will take all wealth out of SouthKorea and leave it in the same economical state as North Korea is in.
China will RAPE Korea!!!!!
When Korea does achieve a perfect freedom(=Nothing left to lose), then SK and NK, two beggar nations, can unite and serve a common master, China.
Then, China will order Koreas to attack Japan. Many Korean men will die from that war. And then, the Chinese will move Koreans to labor camps near Tibet.
Brian, you are stopping or delaying this terrifying outcome for Korean people.
Fight on!
If you convert one Korean youth, you are saving his/her life and their family from this unimaginable horror.
It is worth the fight.
I’ve been here 15 months. In the USA, I would consider myself left. Here, it seem like the left are fascists aligning themselves with 김정일. And a lot of people nowadays are aligning themselves with the leftists.
Reading this makes me was to get the hell out of this place before the sh*t hits the fan.
Matthew,
Korea remains relatively safe -RELATIVELY. The wild card is the emotional immaturity and bitterness Koreas feel beneath their cutsey outward show. It’s like MaryJane meets psychokiller.
Great column in the Korea Herald: http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/. Titled “What’s behind the U.S. beef protests”.
“Most netizens are fairly reasonable and pleasant human beings and a real credit to Korean society….”
How the hell could you possibly know that? Or maybe you are just afraid they might try to look you up?
A) I spent most of last week getting pinged by DCInside, B) It wouldn’t be that hard to look me up if that’s what they wanted to do.
‘The involvement of students represents an education system with no capacity for rational, creative thinking…..’
when you start to imply the citizens of your host country are morons, well, what do you expect?
still further, the guy’s entire blog is filled with negativity towards koreans so why he’s so surprised?
perhaps he can consult with bevers on how to handle such things.
I don’t see how you equate criticism of a country’s educational system with calling the country’s citizens idiots pawi.
@ 10 Because in the magical world of Pawi, everything is an insult to Koreans.
At least the blogger who got attacked by the netizens shouldn’t feel he’s the only one. The nutizens are attacking anyone that they feel do not agree with them, including the riot cops. They are finding out where the cops went to school, where they live, and where they have their web pages. They threaten the cops and their family. They are verbally abusing the cops and humiliate them. They throw candles at them, and protesting middle school kids even laugh at them. The Koreans who do not agree with protesters get far worse treatment imaginable, so the blogger shouldn’t feel he’s being singled out.

Hmm, nutizens/commies/fascists, a scary combination
Thanks for your support and kind words, everyone. So far it looks like there hasn’t been any problem at school. The guy has changed the post on his blog twice, and now it doesn’t make any mention of us specifically and it no longer includes our personal information. I plan to do a big long write-up about all this once I feel the coast is clear. I know who this guy is, and it wasn’t some random attack from a teenaged netizen, but rather a pretty ugly, deliberate attack by somebody who really ought to know better.
Also wanted to remind everyone that two foreigners were attacked here, not just me, although I’m the one who can write about it. He also went after my friend and editor, giving her a ton of stress about it, too. Actually, a lot of her coworkers first heard about this through The Marmot’s Hole.
Hopefully if we go to the police we can at least press criminal charges and have them stick. Not surprisingly I’m not that optimistic.
You should go after him Brian otherwise there will be a next time and then some.
