Koreans Hold Anti-Beef Import Candlelight Vigil at Duke

by Sonagi on June 8, 2008

in Korean Economy, South Korea, South Korean Politics

A whopping thirty-something Koreans showed up in front of Duke’s chapel holding placards and chanting slogans for one whole hour. The Chosun Ilbo found this event newsworthy enough for a brief article, but the vigil seems to have received no coverage from the local press.

This is embarrassing for Koreans overseas. I bet those protesting students were stuffing themselves with steaks and burgers all along. Don’t tell me they’ve never visited the Galbi house or ate at the Korean restaurant serving ox tail soup. Holding an Anti American beef protest in America, that is some nerve of them.

For the benefit of those who can’t read Korean. The comments to this linked article are overwhelmingly negative towards the candle light protesters. Not all Koreans are anti US or anti US beef and a lot of them are sick and tired of candle light protests.

that’s the chosun ilbo, my father’s favorite newspaper in the whole wide world.

don’t give the waegookins a false impression about Korea or Koreans.

Let’em have the truth.

Just goes to show you that studying 47 hours a day can get you into Duke, but it can’t give you the simple common sense to realize that Americans (including the Korean-American variety) are in fact not dropping like flies around them mere minutes after eating some 31-month old US BEEEEEEEEF! [cue Darth Vader music]

In all seriousness, I encourage all overseas Koreans to hold nightly candlelight vigils at their local city hall or town square. The citizens of the world are so painfully ignorant about the black plague of US beef, and your unique knowledge and special understanding of the issue will enlighten the planet and prevent the tragic deaths of millions…nay…billions.

Anything that makes Americans realize how anti-American the Koreans are is a good thing.

5 lee June 8, 2008 at 7:17 am

I can tell some of the commenters are Korean Americans. One of them mentions he has been eating beef in America for 20 years.

6 wjk, 검은 머리 외국인 June 8, 2008 at 7:57 am

and why is that Alejandro?

why do you want Americans to hate Korea?

hmm?

I mean no expat in France is douche bag enough to actively make Americans hate the French, because the French despite the Americans.

What about Japan, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, etc?

Hmm?

Resolve your inner hate.

“because the French despite the Americans”

The French don’t despise Americans. Trust me on that one.

Not all Koreans are anti US or anti US beef and a lot of them are sick and tired of candle light protests.

Yes true, but a lot of them are conservative right wingers and hard-core LMB fans who also believe that the people should just stuff it and follow LMB’s policies to the letter. Of course it remains to be seen whether or not these guys will eat US beef considering that some of them can afford the top grade Hanwoo that is out of reach of most Koreans.

9 tbonetylr June 8, 2008 at 8:55 am

“top grade Hanwoo”

Top Grade ONLY because Koreans say it is and is labled as such.

10 Benicio74 June 8, 2008 at 10:26 am

“Top grade Hanwoo”

Hah!

Total myth that Korean beef is top quality.

The morons only believe it becuase they are so nationalistic and totally lack critical thinking skills.

Surprisingly, there’s a been a bit of Korean news about the real “quality” of Korean beef and how it is for more likely that mad cow could manifest from Korean beef farmer practices than American.

Actually, it seems likely that some Koreans believe Hanwoo to be superior because it is far more expensive. There are many here who believe expensive automatically means good!

11 hardyandtiny June 8, 2008 at 10:32 am

The French have protests, but they don’t dress up like cows
and put on a school play performance for their grandmothers in front
of city hall.

12 mins0306 June 8, 2008 at 10:35 am

OK, it seems like the “top grade Hanwoo” thing is being twisted around.

Let me clarify.

Now Hanwoo has, like other countries’ beef, it’s own grade system. Now the mid to lower grades are those found in supermarkets or your local butcher. The higher grades you have to shell out a fortune. Does this mean that it is better than USDA Grade A beef? Well, I don’t know but I’m not suggesting that it is.

Now what I meant by the above is that the same Koreans dissing the protestors probably won’t touch US beef if they knew it was US beef and since some of them are rich will instead pay a hefty sum for the upper grade Hanwoo.

Mins0306,

How are the different Korean grades labeled?

14 mins0306 June 8, 2008 at 12:50 pm

gbevers,

It’s a bit complicated. The grading system for Hanwoo uses a combination of letters(A,B,C,D for size and amount) and numbers (1++,1+,1,2,3, for amount of fat, color of the meat, etc) to classify the meat. Here’s a page from Naver that explains it

http://kin.naver.com/detail/detail.php?d1id=4&dir_id=410&eid=TJA1qK+7/9PRXTO2QU8dnnN1w9c1pWTU&qb=x9G/7CC17rHe&pid=fZWR+woQsDCssbROmUGsss–220550&sid=SEtU@9pMS0gAAGUdc7k

So, the best of grade is obviously 1++A

It’s very nice of the American government to allow Korean citizens to protest in the USA.
What’s the Korean governments policy?
That’s right foreigners are not allowed to protest in Korea, unless you are Cindy Sheehan and your protest is anti-American.

16 stacked June 8, 2008 at 6:19 pm

just an FYI about the Chosun.

It is a liberal NOT conservative paper.

Liberals in Korea are neo-socially conservative and fiscally retarded. In the US it is the opposite, right wingers are socially conservative and fiscally whatever.

17 WangKon936 June 8, 2008 at 6:35 pm

I’d be very surprised if any of those protesters are Korean Americans. They are likely Korean overseas students (F-1 visa cases). I find it hard to believe 30 Korean American students to get worked up enough, given the apathy they have over politics and the motherland, as well as the fact that they do not fear U.S. beef due to a LIFETIME of eating it.

P.S. I can’t read the article linked because I don’t have access to a computer that can display hangul script this weekend.

18 mins0306 June 8, 2008 at 8:21 pm

WK, you never know.

Some KorAms are coming forward and saying that US beef cannot be trusted.

19 dogbert June 8, 2008 at 11:05 pm

The U.S. should encourage a group of Virginia Tech students to travel to Korea to protest.

20 WangKon936 June 9, 2008 at 6:15 am

# 17,

Anyone BESIDES those ajumma housewives?

21 sesame seed June 9, 2008 at 12:58 pm

hahahahahaha

Dogbert, you should change your name to Cockpuncher!

22 L June 20, 2008 at 4:59 am

Dogbert. That is quite a questionable comment. Just because a massacare killer is from a certain nationality (ethinity more like) does not give the whole the blame. I mean there were other mass murdering caucassians african american hispanics out there no one blames there background about it.
