[UPDATE: Frog in a Well-Korea notes that Korean students used to boycott school because they thought the education they were getting was substandard.]
[Original Post] Shockingly, students at Seoul National University have voted to stop studying to add their bit to the beef hysteria.
Not so shockingly, their professors have not noticed any difference.
I would have felt better about the class boycott if they would have made an exception for science classes.

I sort of wish my university students had decided to boycott classes today. Them staying away is one thing. Them showing up to class and not feeling the need to participate is another matter entirely.
Go Lee Sae Jin!!!
From the BBC:
Not all South Koreans agree with the candlelit protesters who continue to march through the streets of Seoul each night.
Lee Sae Jin, a 25 year old university student, bravely held his own, one-man protest in favour of US beef imports.
He was soon shepherded away by a policeman, led off through the rather angry crowd that had gathered to read his posters.
“We are an exporting nation,” he had written.
“We are creating the fear of mad cow disease in our own minds. Candlelights should be used to brighten the darkness, not burn down our own homes.”

I want to buy that kid a night at the room salon and all the Hite he can drink. For once I can say “sparkling” sans sarcasm.
I’ll chip in on #3.
Anyway, suddenly I’m reminded about prestigious SNU’s Sparkling world ranking, my former SNU alumnus/Russian colleague’s explanation of how big of a joke SNU was, and that embarassing poll that came out last year that showed a large percentage of SNU students study only a few hours per week. Wish I could find that link, I think it showed up on the Hole.
If the geniuses at SNU were milking the mad cow for a day off classes, it would be clever, but I doubt that’s the case.
Mr. Lee Sae Jin has got balls like church bells going out into the madness and against “popular opinion” like that. Wow.
That lad is much braver than I.
Lee Sae Jin: You rule.
There are a LOT more that think like Lee Sae-Jin out there. My entire in-law family, for one. They’re just silent because a) nobody wants to get lynched and b) they’re too busy actually working.
Seriously, any of these college or school kids protesting whose daddies work for Samsung or Hyundai are just begging for dad to be unemployed. Let him.
I thought that SNU students were the Intellectual Elite of Korea. If they are the Intellectual Elite, then what are the stupid people like?
Lee Sae Jin, I salute you! You, and all those who share the same name as you, will get free beer from me forever!
Lee Sae Jin: black sheep among sheep
At least one student has the ability to utilize critical thinking, reason, and logic.
Cheers
#11,
Like Gravytrain says, there are a lot of people who think it’s BS.
The majority of the students I’ve spoken about this said in class that thought that American beef is no more dangerous than Korean beef. One actually said that the whole thing is absurd and questioned the intelligence of those who are so eager to jump on the bandwagon, knowing quite well that some of her classmates would resent the comment.
You think nobody thinks that way because the Korean media rarely shows the other side of the coin if helps selling more papers and commercial time for the 6 o’clock news.
Lee Jae-shin is a parttime stringer for the BBC, anyone in english journalism in korea knows this. his dad was a diplomat in Europe and he was mostly schooled in Britain. The only reason he studies at SNU is because his father is a member of the kangnamguchong and aspires to a greater political career. my niece knows him from school, apparently he also drives a BMW to school.

What about the guy who has to deliver pizza?
Do you mean Lee Sae-Jin? Different guy?
Living in South Korea I contracted dormant tuberculosis but I never thought much about it. Now I’m thinking about how I could have created a protest
in New York and met some hot babes.
I’m sure we’ll soon see some bars calling themselves “Mad Cow”
Well. here is an article about BSE. I’m not a scientist but I think some people may have a point when it comes to the potential problem that BSE can create. I think the point here is that there are just too many unknown variables… I am absolutely confused so I would like other people’s input. thank you

Lee Sae Jin wants US beef? Then, let him have it. Of course, Some guys here
who agree with him, you can have that too. You have every right to eat US beef. If you are lucky eneugh, you could have that even if you bought the
Aussi beef now in Korea.
But we won’t and we want our right not to have that dirty meat
You Koreans need to learn about the science.
