US Beef Deal to be Posted at 4:00

by Robert Koehler on May 29, 2008

I know you’re all giddy with anticipation:

South Korea’s agriculture minister will request the posting of the new beef import deal with the U.S. on the government gazette later Thursday, opening the local market to most meat cuts, an official said.

Agriculture Ministry spokesman Kim Hyeong-soo said the announcement is to be made at 4 p.m. and will elaborate on government measures taken to enhance import quarantine control, country-of-origin rules, support for farmers and policies to improve quality of locally grown cattle.

“Agriculture Minister Chung Woon-chun will make the announcement along with working level officials,” the public relations officer said.

I guess that explains the two guys in business suits I saw today hanging off the golden arches near Insadong with a fleet of firemen and ambulances on stand by below… Ironically, it seemed to bring even greater numbers to the world’s biggest fast food giant. I grabbed an extra burger for the occasion.

If those clowns were actually protesting this then it just sort of helps prove how fucking stupid they are.

3 SomeguyinKorea May 29, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Wouldn’t it be funny if the new deal only allows for beef from cows that are under 30 months old?

1. A new ad campaign? “When you’re watching potential life-threatening stupid, only a Big Mac can quench your hunger.”

New slogan: “Big Mac patties never had beef in them to begin with!

I’m told one of the biggest concerns is mislabeling. The Koreans are afraid that butchers will try to pass-off cheap American beef for Korean beef. The trickery and fraud of Koreans on Koreans frightens them more than the beef itself.

Ahh, its nice to have the good old newby shtick of Sheldon. Thank you roboseyo for reminding us of what we once had. \
LOL Roboseyo,

And Canadian beef deal to follow at 4:20.

When I eat out with Korean internation students as well as visiting cousins, not one of them are hesistant about ordering beef products. When I ask if they’re afraid of mad cow disease, they just shrug. “You know, our country is so obsessed with protests.”

In reference to #6, my Korean brother-in-law over the weekend expressed the identical sentiment, only his concern was with restaurateurs, not butchers. Anyway… same same.

11 mateomiguel May 29, 2008 at 5:26 pm

OK, so its 5:20. What’s the scoop?

“South Korea to implement U.S. beef import agreement despite protests”

its gonna be nasty tonite downtown, i just fought through about 5000 police from city hall to gyungbukgong station and almost up to my office near sajik park. the us embassy is sealed off.

these clowns are really starting to make my life miserable

14 roboseyo May 29, 2008 at 6:19 pm

damn! you’re right. I’d better start walking to work right now, and drape myself in my Canadian flag.

do you think it’ll be over soon?

I’m just so friggin’ tired of hearing about this damned FTA — It’s shit or get off the pot time in Roboseyo’s book.

Today in class, I mentioned the North Korean spies in the Korean Teacher’s Association, and rather than arguing or getting upset at such an insinuation, all my students nodded knowingly.

ha!

now if the energy expended on this non-issue had only been put to the rising incidence of diabetes in young korean men (currently on par with the U.S. at about 7%) and how fast food and a sedentary lifestyle are directly correlated, there could have been real, verifiable prevention of a very serious health issue.

With the South Koreans so brazenly standing up to the U.S., one wonders why the Norks haven’t chimed in their support. Why aren’t the streets of Pyongyang full of candle-waving students declaring that they don’t want U.S. beef either? Oh, yeah, that is another thing South Koreans can blame the U.S. for. As the son of a U.S. Marine who served here during the war, these people can really diminish that as a source of family pride. They’re lucky they have the choice of turning down food.

McDonald’s Korea says it uses only Austrailian Beef. Also it’s 100% Beef, according to the Korean MickyDees Website. If you can’t trust McDonald’s, then who can you trust????

18 andy-in-japan May 29, 2008 at 8:04 pm

“one wonders why the Norks haven’t chimed in their support”

I always figured the hippy-lefty South Korean teachers were NK wannabes – almost as good as the real thing.

19 r.rac May 29, 2008 at 8:07 pm

just fought throught downtown to get home, its a zoo, all the streets around gwanghwamun are blocked off out to sajik park.

city hall plaza was packed with these morons. chanting anti-american crap.

i got an idea, maybe the texas cattlemans assoc could file a defamation of beef lawsuit against these idiots, remember the oprah lawsuit?

some days i really wish there was neutron korean bomb. kills protesting koreans but leaves the buildings intact

#16 you are dead on

20 WangKon936 May 30, 2008 at 12:01 am

Don’t these ppl have anything better to do?

21 hitest May 30, 2008 at 7:29 am

#5 Too funny :)

#6, #10 I too suspect that the labeling will be a big problem. The result of the protestors’ efforts will be that they will be eating US beef disguised and priced at Korean beef prices. Nice to see that their efforts will not go unrewarded.

On the side, I wonder how many of these student protestors can afford to eat beef anyway ? Oh yeah, I forgot they are all still living at home with mommy and daddy who are both working and going broke feeding/clothing/educating their adult children…who as it seems in return protest the import of cheaper US beef.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Let them eat cake.

I’m not sure if you guys in Korea are able to access the DPRK’s news sites, but as someone who can here in the states, all I can say is that South Koreans are being praised as heroes in the north who will not let the evil Imperialists kill there children with poison beef. Then on the next editorial is something about the U.S. sending food relief to the e north.
