In Japan, English is introduced as a compulsory subject in middle school, but that will change in 2011 with the introduction of an English curriculum and textbook for students in 5th and 6th grades, who will learn 285 vocabulary words and 50 expressions. Students will receive 35 lessons of 45 minutes each during the school year, which works out to less than one lesson per week, not exactly ideal for retention. The Ministry of Education has begun piloting the program in 550 schools nationwide.

Not a great deal of interest here from the hole. Put a Nazi uniform on it and watch it take fire!
Students definitely need better instruction in those grades before getting to the middle school textbooks which are rarely level-appropriate for them. I think not teaching basic spelling and grammar is really going to limit the effectiveness of the curriculum but since many teachers are leery of teaching English they might not have had a choice there.
Bit pointless, you’re not going to learn fuck-all by having a 45 minute lesson once a week.
