Well, It’s Certainly More Dramatic Than Chucking Your Severed Digits at Embassies

A reputed Japanese right-wing extremist shot himself in the head in front of the Japanese Diet in Tokyo, reports FOX:

The man, who was not immediately identified by police and appeared to be in his 60s, died at a hospital shortly after the shooting. He bore a protest letter to Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda calling for “firm” handling of foreign policy.

Kyodo News agency reported that the letter referred to China, but police said it called for a tougher foreign policy in general and for the government to defend Tokyo’s Yasukuni war shrine, which honors Japan’s war dead. China and others have criticized the shrine.

Media reports said the man was apparently a right-wing activist. Such extremists have committed violent and often suicidal acts near government buildings to publicize nationalist positions.

    Darwinism does work!

Too bad it worked on this guy in his 60’s after he probably reproduced.

    Anyway, keep thinnin’ that herd!

I love the Japanese information ministry… the letter wasn’t a rant against China, but it was “taking a firmer stand on foreign policy issues…”

I do remember Korean nationalists trying to (being successful?) light themselves on fire in protests.

Somewhat more dramatic than chugging pesticide, don’t you think? Poisoning oneself - and, I suspect as a result, dying slowly and in great misery - seems to be more fashionable in Korea at the moment than jumping into the Han (pretty big a couple of years ago), hanging oneself (still a favored choice of K-entertainers), and setting oneself alight (the old ‘demo’ standby).

At least he didn’t kill his wife and four children in prote4st before crashing his car and killing himself, or heaven forbid, throw himself in front of a subway train and delay commuters on their way to MacDonalds.

Doesn’t “better” Mishima Yukio’s seppuku - one that included several botched beheading attempts.

    #4,

Hey hey hey! Let’s not mix in people who commit suicide for misdiagnosed clinical depression vs. people who are trying to make a political statement!

In this particular case the political statement is a violent death for a pretty dang violent group in Japan.

I’m with Mondoo — nobody’s political protest will ever top Bee-Man’s.

Fair enough. Although I suspect that some of the political statement guys who kill themselves are probably also suffering from depression or other forms of mental illness - diagnosed or not - my post was in poor taste. Sorry to anyone who may have been offended. Not my intention.
