My Two Pages of Glory

OK, it’s not much — two pages of pure fluff, and poorly written fluff at that — but it is the first published piece I’ve written in Korean.

It’s part of a larger section with contributions from architect Clark E. Llewellyn, writer Michael Fitzpatrick and photographer Lee Jongkeun (who did the amazing work in Korea Style).

To actually read my crap, click to the almost-full-size version here (posted with the permission of Harper’s Bazaar).

    Robert,

    Good work! Keep at it!

Still looking forward to your book-length treatment of the subject…

    Bad Monkey — Thanks!

Frequenter — It’s not. They just didn’t know how to pronounce my name, and I forgot to include my preferred spelling in the draft. For that matter, the first caption in incorrect, too — that’s 강화성당, not 강화온수리성당. But I’m just happy they found my tripe — and my photos — printable.

Congrats, Robert! …i’m sure it’s better stuff than what they usually print…

    … that’s 강화성당, not 강화온수리성당.

Does that mean it’s Catholic? Or are Episcopal churches in Korea called 성당 as well?

It’s Episcopal. Episcopal churches are called 성당 in Korean, too, just like Catholic churches.

    Episcopal = Church of England/Anglican

You learn something new everyday :)

    PS: Way to go, Robert!

Thanks for the correction, dda. My computer cannot input Hangeul, so I have to cut and paste everything.

Which begs the question, where did the 셧 syllable come from? Since it’s not exactly a common syllable — except maybe in misspellings of 셨…

Anyway, as someone said in broken Korean, maybe it’s time for a new comp… :-) Or at least an upgrade.

    @#13:

You address me as 씨 and then speak to me in banmal?

    @#15:

셧 is probably a misspelling that I didn’t catch in my haste to cut and paste.

“two pages of pure fluff, and poorly written fluff at that”, “crap” and “tripe”.

For a minute I thought that you must be referring to some of the stuff you write for the monthly “SEOUL” mag ;-)

Or perhaps you were you attempting to be self-deprecating?
