Whale Meat Prices Double

'We sell whale meat'

Bad news for whale meat fans — the price of the stuff is going up as the Korea Coast Guard cracks down on whale poaching and trading of whale meat:

The price of whale meat has doubled since last year. That’s because whale meat is in short supply since the Korea Coast Guard intensified a crackdown on whale poaching and the illegal trade of whale meat.

The Coast Guard in Donghae, Gangwon Province began a crackdown on whaling and whale trading in November in Pohang and Ulsan, North Gyeongsang Province. On Monday it arrested three seamen, including a 47-year-old whaling ship skipper identified as Chang.

Whaling has been banned in Korea since the 1980s, but whales accidentally caught or found dead can be sold.

If Korea actually enforced the laws they have on record, there would not be a need for a crackdown on this or that every other week.

Ummmm, whale… [slobbers].

I once had some very tasty whale in Tokyo, comparable to a very succulent steak, but haven’t tried it here. I hear the good bits are not a large part of the beast, though.

Canadian Innuits eat it frozen (skin and blubber cut into little cubes ) or deep fried ( very quickly )and dipped in soya sauce ( my preference ) and call it muktuk.

Surprising enough, Japan cannot sell whale meat fast enough to match the taking of whales and now has an unsold stock of 12-month-consumption. The Japanese whaling(so called scientific whaling) is a government business run by bureaucrats subsidized by our tax money.

A few weeks ago a new Huie Jip in the neighborhood had what they said was whale as a side dish (served cooked, sliced and cold). It looked and tasted like beef – t’was delicious.

I wouldn’t touch whale meat with a ten foot pole, and that’s not just for ethical reasons:

I’ve had whale meat before and it was terrible. It was like boiled samgyupssal, except the fat tasted like plastic.

I had to cut the fat off and dip the rest in loads of salt to eat it…

oh, and one tiny serving was 30,000won

#7 Someguy, then you should stay away from all seafood. I have read similar stories of shellfish and fish contamination. Whales are merely sea-going cows, there is nothing wrong with responsibly using the resource.

Whales are killers who are determined to get revenge on eaters of whale meat.

We must fight them there so we don’t have to fight them here.

Do you even know what you’re saying? A crackdown is enforced of the law lol.

Whale meat is a black market product in Korea and every country has problem with the black market.

Show me an endangered species, and I’ll find it on some Asian guy’s plate.

That about sums it up, don’t ya think ?

Except that the minke whales that are targeted are actually not endangered.

#7 Someguy…getting harder and harder to find “safe foods” these days. Every take a drive in the country side and check out the farms? Notice how close many of the crops are planted just off the side of the road sucking up the exhaust fo the endless line of cars driving by? They should indicate for vegetables, how far from the side of the road they were grown, and charge accordingly.

Heavy minerals from yellow dust settling down upon the rice fields bother you any ? Ever get suspicious over what some farmers do with their septic discharge to save a few Won on fertilizer?

One thing is for sure, living will eventually kill us all ;)
