Don’t really get it. Absent the critique of Christianity, what was the film but another Korean wail-a-thon?

I think they deserve it. I found Secret Sunshine to be a wonderful, deep movie that may fail for many people because it’s too floppy, like a novel, but which has great ambition in terms of story, character and visual aesthetic.

    Lee Chang-dong rocks!

I finally managed to see Secret Sunshine yesterday at a showing at my university. I agree with #3. This is a brilliant, thought-provoking film that offers perhaps the best meditation on the problem of faith in a harsh world that I’ve ever come across. I didn’t find it to be a wail-a-thon at all. The handling of tragedy is done in such a way as to focus on much deeper issues, not to create some pop tearjerker. Lee Chang-dong and Jeon Do-yeon deserve all the accolades they’ve received, as far as I’m concerned.

If you toss in Peppermint Candy and Oasis (although maybe not Green Fish), I’d be willing to give my vote to Lee as the world’s finest currently working director.
