I’m much more concerned about the following:

Live rates at 2008.03.15 02:37:30 UTC
1 KRW = 0.00100229 USD 1 USD = 997.720 KRW

Is the won the only currency falling against the weak dollar, and when will it stop?

Hilary Clinton’s starting to look mighty fine. ;)

When the South Korean central bank runs out of won to sell against the dollar, probably…

Well, we now know that Mary Ann is a pothead. But did you know that Ginger can really lay the smack down?

Obama! Obama! Obama! Obama!
Obama! Obama! Obama! Obama!
Obama! Obama! Obama! Obama!

Make America a color-blind nation. Make it to be an international country, achieving its potential to be a fair and honest country.

God damn beer in Singapore is expensive. Lunchtime bender around a hundred bucks Sing. On the other hand, getting the boat back to Bintan that night, I was lucky to meet a bunch of aged Koreans who plied me with soju and dried squid. Needless to say, the wife was not impressed when I fell off the back of the moto-taxi when I returned home.

Oh yeah, and for those of you who know me IRL, I was interviewed by ESPN about the champions league. You can get the benefit of my wisdom vis a vis all things European football-related by tuning into the magazine program around 2p.m. Korean time on Sunday.

do you really think he can make it color blind??

women are voting for clinton

it’s just funny to see the blacks turn on the clintons after all he was “the first black president”

10, The Zoo used to be the place to go, not sure how things are as I haven’t been back to Daejeon since I fell asleep on a 6am train out of Yongsan after an all nighter in Itaewon. Cheongju, only 40 mins away by bus has a kicking nightlife district and good live music. Ask the Taxi driver for Chungdae Chungmun and get ye to Pearl Jam, Road King, or any other bar in the area.

And Obama doesn’t know what it is to grow up in a country with sexism because he has never experienced misogyny, so should we women vote for Clinton?

Fuck China. The conclusion of this story is blatantly false.

You trying to tell me that Ming Yao was never surrounded by fans to sign in China?

Oh, Fuck China.

The choice is clear. Greater Korean Japanese and American alliance to counter the Chinese people who are like pigs. They pollute, care only about money, steal other people’s lands, sinicize other peoples to steal their lands for ever and ever, and don’t even have the brain power to care that they can’t vote to put the PRC out of power.

These fuckers are responsible for North Korea’s sole existence.

They will one day fall, just like East Europe did.

Chinese Korean War Vets…die in pain. Die poor.

#20, continuing evidence of the rapidly evolving insanity of the Kor-Am contingent here. Stand off between Korean athlete and security officials leads to foreign policy prescription and near calls for genocide/war. Great, you, baduk and the other cunt must be syphilitic.

25 andy March 16, 2008 at 10:23 am

#24.

Are you trying to set off an another kyopo-expat spat? You do know that despite your declarations of the “evloving insanity of the Kor-Am contingent” there are Korean and Kor-Am commentators here who are very much sane and reasonable. But of course considering your previous racist and anti-Korean remarks one shouldn’t be surprised, eh?

26 aaronm March 16, 2008 at 10:48 am

Moi racist, please. Probably should have qualified the remarks, but the three most prominent amongst you are certainly not adverse to proclaiming the unique nature of your race. I merely take exception to their exceptionalism and would have no problem calling out whites, blacks or anyone else who made such monomaniacal utterances.

Love

Aaronm (not anti-Korean, just anti-stupid).

27 aaronm March 16, 2008 at 10:49 am

should have been meglomaniacal, but it’s Sunday morning and I am hung over to buggery.

Obama’s white

He’s certainly as white as he is black, a fact that no one ever seems to pick up on.

31 R. Elgin March 16, 2008 at 11:40 am

Talk about Chinese propaganda, take a look at this guys site — and I quote:

I am 100% sure that the Tibet unrest is under Thibetan spiritual leader’s mastermind. (sic)

China, people and government, are bullied by socalled Thibetan activists. Our goodwill to accommodate international athletes are ruthlessly crushed by unkind international biased and confrontational activists.

Of course, international community will watch and criticise how Chinese government manage their own business. American cops shot dead black Americans who rob unmanned stores in New Orleans, which was regarded as righteous. However, Chinese government will be blamed for only using harsh measures to control violent mobs. . .

Is this a mouthpiece or what?

32 dogbert March 16, 2008 at 11:40 am

The first pro-Kim Il Sung report from an American in North Korea. This girl grew up in America and her family praised Kim Il Sung. She visited Pyongyang and got brainwashed

http://www.nodutdol.org/m_feat…..Leader.php

Is that real, or just an elaborate parody? I honestly can’t tell.

33 R. Elgin March 16, 2008 at 12:00 pm

That “first pro-Kim Il Sung report from an American in North Korea” is an interesting thing to read. If one goes to the link Brainwashing, the running commentary is pretty much a well done bit of NK vs. capitalism propaganda:

“North Korea’s capital has purity, almost innocence” vs. dirty, cluttered New York-style advertising (she hasn’t seen Seoul yet) and she wonders why Pyongyang has no street garbage or smog — maybe for the same reason there are few lights burning at night in North Korea. I loved this line:

(Pyongyang) also lacks the billboards that not only pollute our vision but our minds. This absence not only makes the city unique and stunning. It speaks of a unique cleanness of the beliefs and values of north Korean society

It’s really too bad China is so polluted because they could certainly use some “clean” beliefs just about now.

“… continuing evidence of the rapidly evolving insanity of the Kor-Am contingent here.”

aaronm,

I think you are taking wjk a little too seriously.

#21 Gillian Thanks for the link! Wonderful set of vintage photos of Korea, on of the best collections I’ve seen, Oh , man, does it take me back, makes the old heartstrings resonate… I started studying Korean in 1965… and there is the country as I first knew and loved it. Kudos to Gary Helsene, the photographer, and his sister (?) for having them scanned and posted on the web.
Thanks again!

37 gbnhj March 16, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Bump to those photos in the #21 link! They are great – fantastic color and clarity, like you’re stepping back in time.

40 James Turnbull March 16, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Can anyone help me locate an old Korean advertisement please? It’s the one which has a Korean woman in a green dress looking inside a shop window, and then when she turns around there are hundreds of women passing her all wearing the same green dress. It’s a great symbol of conformity and mindlessly following trends here.

Most long-term expats would probably remember it. I think the woman is Jang Jin-young, but I’m not 100% sure. Any information at all about the ad would be much appreciated, and worth a free beer for anyone in Busan!

Thanks in advance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jang_Jin-young

41 mins0306 March 16, 2008 at 6:38 pm

#40.

I believe this is the one that you’re looking for.

http://blog.naver.com/anlichol?Redirect=Log&logNo=140003374607

Actually the woman in the ad was Kim Nam-ju, one of the “CF Queens”, and it was for Daewoo’s Prugio apartments.

42 mins0306 March 16, 2008 at 7:04 pm

The message the ad was trying to relay was “What she selects will become a trend. And since she selected a Prugio apartment, Prugio apartments will also become a trend.”

43 James Turnbull March 16, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Thanks a lot for that. You wouldn’t believe how much time I wasted over at Naver looking for it…although I did learn a lot about Jang Jin-young in the process!

44 baduk March 17, 2008 at 12:13 am

aaronm,

FYI, I am a KoreanAmerican who served the US Navy as a lieutenant for four years.

I love America and its potential. I love KoreanAmericans for what they can contribute to America.

KAs are working hard and paying taxes to Ameircan government. Most of them are very patriotic to America.

I am proud of my heritage as a KA.

Are you proud of yourself, or are you in the process of self-destruction?

You are responsible for your actions. If you become alcoholic and get VD and discharged from your job(USFK?), you have no one but yourself to blame.

45 baduk March 17, 2008 at 12:21 am

FYI, there are many KA young people who are fighting in Iraq as we speak.

About 10+ KAs have given their lives to protect America.

Isn’t it about time for us to recognize KAs are Americans too?

Or, am I asking too much for a nation whose inhabitants still downplay BlackAmericans and HispanicAmericans roles in national defense?

I respect all Americans soldiers, be they white, black, Hispanic, Oriental or Mixed. We are all Americans.

47 baduk March 17, 2008 at 3:26 am

aaronm,

Don’t get me wrong. I am not here to practice holier-than-thou.

If I am right, then I am twice your age. So, bear with me and think what I am saying as something of value.

I have been stationed in Korea for one year. It was very difficult for me, a ex-Korean who speaks perfect Korean and knows Korean culture inside and out, to live in Korea for a whole year.

I was lonely(yes, admit it. Just like AAA) and bored. And, I now how easy it is to fall into drinking and whoring in Korea. Heck, most GIs do it.

However, think about your future. Is it what you want to do?

Learn Taikwondo, Korean, get to know history of Korea and nearby countries. Get to know people. Be an expert. This will help you in your career.

And, attend a church. What you see is all that is in the world. There is a world beyond. And, I truly believe there is Heaven.

And, I believe Bible and Jesus.

48 baduk March 17, 2008 at 3:29 am

what you see is all ->what you see is NOT all

Sorry about typos.

you mean baduk?

50 Linkd March 17, 2008 at 9:47 am

#2 “When will it stop?”

Soon, I assume. I bet the central bank went on a little won shopping spree to strengthen the currency, on behalf of Korea’s exporters. It won’t continue. Dollar weakness remains the forecast.

51 Linkd March 17, 2008 at 10:07 am

Blubber, blubber, should have finished that third coffee before getting myself in a muddle. I mean, the BOK probably bought dollars to weaken the won, on behalf of Korea’s exporters. Another possiblity is that the exporters themselves bought up dollars ‘cuz we’re nearing the end of the first quarter and they need to have some US currency around to pay their raw materials bills. The forecast remains unchanged.

Interesting news at Chosun,
http://news.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2008/03/17/2008031700374.html

A Korean cloth designer(man) sexually assaulted an American men at JjimGilbang(bath house) when he slapt. The Korean guy said curiosity made him do it.

Oral?

53 baduk March 17, 2008 at 10:40 am

That profession is teeming with Homos.

This Korean homo wanted to “experience” an American you-know-what.

Was he satisfied?

He is going to jail for sure. Unless he pays a lot of money to this American.

54 baduk March 17, 2008 at 11:03 am

This Korean SOB killed his Vietnamese bride.
http://news.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2008/03/16/2008031600775.html

18 broken ribs? This animal deserves more than 12 years. He should be sent to Vietname, so that he will be beaten to death by Vietnamese young people.

55 aaronm March 17, 2008 at 11:35 am

Baduk,

Cheers for the life advice, fella. Problems with your suggestions are as such.

1. Age carries no weight in my mind; this is one of the big problems I have with confucianism.

2. I now reside in Indonesia. I’m married to an Indonesian. I speak the language, I box as a means of self-defense and exercise. You see, I have no need for any more than the rudimentary Korean I possess, which may I add, I put to good use in order to glean soju and ojing-o off a group of adjoshis and adjumas (adjumi?) when returning on the ferry from Sinapore the other day.

3. I’m with Dawkins on the last bit, but I’m happy you have your faith. It serves a lot of people well, including my mother-in-law, who is a good Muslim (ducks for cover).
