Yes, Kim's focus is on the period 1860-1885. It has an excellent account of the calculated efforts by Li Hung-Chang to utilize Korea to distract the western barbarians and buffer China against them, as well as to make it an economically exploited appendage of China a la so-called Western imperialist schemes. Hilare Conroy has an even more detailed account of Li's machinations in this regard in his superb account of "The Japanese Seizure of Korea". I cited Kim only because his book was ready to hand, and the point he makes about the nature of the Chinese-Korean relationship generally (not just in the period at issue)is so incontestable that he just gives a brief statement of it in the introductory material, which I cited as such, to assist the uninformed to appreciate that in the beginning anyway Chinese manipulation in the late 18th century was of a piece with what had been going on for millenia (it changed during the period into a more western style imperialism with the dispatch of Yuan Shi-Kai to manage Korea as China's resident and the new Chinese-Korean commercial treaty fpisted by China on Korea in order to advantage China at the expense not only of other foreign traders but Korea itslef.

E.g., the introductory material in Kim, Key-Hiuk, "The Last Phase of the East Asian World Order: Korea, Japan and the Chinese Empire 1860-1885", esp. pp. 13-15, which is a succinct summary of well and long-established scholarly view of the matter. Frederick Nelson is also good on this topic. Do the rest of your remedial research on your own.

'Wank about all you want with middle Korean uses of Chinese characters (from an era where your mindset is stuck, coincidentally) — in fact, I’d prefer that you drop all the English in your postings and just dazzle us with that linguistic brilliance that, to some, obscures your all-purpose idiocy.' slim
