Of course independence was only realized in 1945 when American soldiers drove the Japanese out of Korea. After which the Koreans began fighting amongst themselves, opening the door to Soviet then later Chinese communist intervention. American, British, Canadian etc troops clean up the mess, and Korea becomes “dependent” upon The United States to this very day.

But, the flags did look swell blowing in the wind this morning.

    Happy (In)dependence Day Korea ! ! !

I thought it was at Potsdam…?

Anyway, yeah, i think this should be translated as Independence Declaration Day, while August 15th is Liberation Day.

Meh…. July 4 has just as much claim to being ‘Independence Day’ for the US as March 1 does for Korea.

Well, it can be called that, but it’s just a bit misleading, which leads us to discuss this here on the MH twice a year like clockwork, it seems. That is what the USA calls their holiday on July 4th, into which they combine the reading of the Declaration of Independence, fighting against the British and achieving victory over them, the writing and passing of the Constitution, and the actual establishment of the new independent government! Wheras the Koreans still maintain four different holidays to commemorate the various steps of their national formation — National Foundation Day Oct 3rd, which maybe more sortta parallels America’s Thanksgiving, and then Independence Declaration Day, the recently-downgraded Constitution Day and Liberation Day.
