RAS Lecture on ROK Journalism and Late-Winter Tours

Tonight, Tuesday, February 26th: RAS-K Lecture-Meeting,has been changed due to B.R. Myers of Dongseo Univeristy and Ed Reed of The Asia Foundation who will share with us their perspectives on tonight’s concert in Pyongyang in terms of North Kora’s foreign relations.

We will meet from 8:00 pm on the 18th floor of the Press Center, at the Seoul Foreign Correspondents Club (SFCC). The Press Center is located on Shinmunro, between Seoul Finance Center and City Hall.. Free for everyone this time only. People are welcome to come early and watch the Pyongyang concert on television at the SFCC from 6:00 PM. In addition to Ed Reed & B.R. Myers, there will be some other authorities on North Korea on hand to make this a night worth all the last-minute hassles of changing lecture topic, venue and time.

Our apologies for all these last-minute changes, but we believe all of these adjustment will justify the outcome.

Tonigh, Tuesday, February 26th: RAS-K Lecture-Meeting,has been changed due to an physical accident preventing originally scheduled Lin Neumnannn to speak. In place of Mr. Neuman, B.R. Myers of Dongseo Univeristy and Ed Reed of The Asia Foundation will share with us their perspectives on tonight’s concert in Pyongyang in terms of North Kora’s foreign relations.

We will meet from 7:30 pm in the 2nd-floor Resident’s Lounge of the Somerset Palace, Anguk-dong (just north of Jogye-sa), Seoul. Free for RAS Members, w5000 donation requested from others.

Tomorrow Evening! Tuesday, February 26th: RAS-K Lecture-Meeting, featuring Mr. A. Lin Neumann (25 years as a journalist, now Chief Editor of the JoongAng Daily, currently Korea’s only foreign editor in a decision-making position) speaking on “Practicing Journalism in a Dual-Language, Dual-Culture Environment.” He will focus on the very real practical and cultural differences between US-style journalism and the approach taken in a Korean newsrooms. 7:30 pm in the 2nd-floor Resident’s Lounge of the Somerset Palace, Anguk-dong (just north of Jogye-sa), Seoul. Free for RAS Members, w5000 donation requested from others.

Sat March 1st: Independence Movement Day Tour: Onyang Folk Museum, Hyeonchung-sa Shrine and the Independence Hall – A pleasant and educational day in Chungcheong-namdo celebrating Korea’s Independence Movement Day. We will visit the folk museum in Onyang, the huge Hyeonchung-sa Shrine to Admiral Yi Sun-shin (the guy on the w100 coin) and the Independence Hall (museum).

Sun March 2nd: Naejang-sa Temple in Naejang-san National Park Tour — We will take this good early-spring opportunity to visit the beautiful Naejang-san National Park, just as the flowers begin to bloom. Once there, we will see the famous Naejang-sa (Hidden-Within Temple).

Sat March 8th: Kiln Tour in Icheon City — One of our best “practical” tours! A trip to the kilns of the masters to watch them create masterpieces from clay to celadon and porcelain in the Icheon area. If time permits we will visit an onggi (kimchi jar) workshop on our way back.

Sun March 9th: Yeoju City Tour: Shilleuk-sa Temple, Buddhist Art Museum, and King Sejong’s Tomb – Today we will visit Yeoju, famous for temples and tombs. First, we will visit Shilluk-sa, home of one of the few brick pagodas in Korea . Then we will go to the Mok-ah Buddhist Museum of master-woodcarver Park Chan-soo. Last, we will see the tomb of King Sejong, the greatest ruler of the Joseon Dynasty who sponsored the invention of Hangeul (Korean alphabet) and other cultural/scientific advancements.

    Thanks for the Update of this emergency news, guys. Should be a great fill-in talk, with lots to debate! Sorry that i won’t be able to be there myself, have an appointment-ceremony-&-dinner i gotta be at instead…
