(UPDATE: Here is the link I forgot to include in the orignial post.)
Entertainer No Hong-chul was attacked by a mentally unstable man yesterday (Korea Times):
According to Gangnam Police Station handling the case, No arrived at his apartment around 8 p.m. after shooting a TV program. The entertainer, who thought Kim was one of his fans waiting for him, greeted him first, but the stranger suddenly punched and kicked him for no apparent reason.
No, known for his closely trimmed beard and blonde hair as well as his habits of screaming and head bobbing through his dialogs, is a staple of MBC’s variety programs.
He is expected to miss two weeks of work. He has been invited to the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Lee Myung-bak next Monday, but it is not known if he will make it.

Damn, Mr. Kim beat me to it!
mentally unstable? i beg to disagree.
that kim guy’s a hero, in my book. should be given a citation, at least, if not a medal. i’ve been wanting to do the same to that blonde dumbass for years. and i’m sure i’m not alone in the queue, either.
kudos to you, good sir, mr. kim.
He is expected to miss two weeks of work.
Exactly how many times did Kim manage to punch and kick this guy? Two weeks’ rest for some kicks and punches represents quite a few cans of whoopass.
On the other hand, if No plans to sue, two weeks’ recovery sounds just about right.
Wow… people are cheering because someone was attacked - just because he was annoying. Nice.
I was thinking of the very same zinger about how No had it coming for his years of work on MBC.
Doctors here recommend at least 2 weeks recovery for a paper cut!

yes, i admit to the non-PC cheering of this.
can’t speak for anyone else, but for some reason, no, i don’t feel guilty because of who the victim is. were it another entertainer, perhaps my feelings would be different…
have you, bum, NEVER had similar feelings about something bad that happened to someone who irritated you or whom you disliked? are you really that nice and kind-hearted?
if so, kudos to you.
if not, get over it and don’t chuck rocks at glass houses. he just got his ass kicked, he didn’t die.
can someone post a link to this guy’s pic? if he is who i think he is…
He is a polarizing character in Korea in that he seems to be universally loved by Koreans, but universally hated by the foreign community.
I know quite a few people who laughed at this news story.

“he seems to be universally loved by Koreans”
actually, as this case implies, there are plenty of locals who think as, er, highly of the moron as the non-locals do.
I think he’s hilarious. He’s as hilarious as this quote by his doctor.
“He underwent surgery Tuesday night to stitch up the ear. The pain he feels is not that severe, but he will need intense treatment for some more days.”
intense treatment? In addition to being funny, he’s clearly a panzy as well.
“have you, bum, NEVER had similar feelings about something bad that happened to someone who irritated you or whom you disliked? are you really that nice and kind-hearted?”
THAT gleefully? No, I don’t think so, save Kim Sr. and Castro. But I don’t think Noh is at their level.
Actually quite a few Koreans detest this jerk because they consider him and his league of losers to be a bad influence upon Korean kids.
If I put Scotch-tape™ on my eyes, so as to look Asian, and jumped around, yelling while wearing long-johns, I would be just about the same level of sophistication as this guy.
It seems that bum when it comes to Koreans not agreeing with him will make fun of them, taunt them, and pretty much act like a “smart ass”. But when it comes to expats, he does the best behavior routine.
Do I detect “사대주의”, that appears in Koreans when they meet foreigners?
Being a smartass and ‘Haha, he got attacked by a crazy guy and got stitches (apparently)’… quite different. One involves physical harm… the other… not so much.

Atleast Paris Hilton likes him…

okay, bum, which do you feel is worse–physical punishment or emotional punishment?
i can see your point in having sympathies for the no-ron because he got beat up, but are you across-the-board on this? do you not feel that our finding humour in the no-ron’s comeuppance is no different in perhaps your finding humour in hilton, lohan, or spears’s comeuppance? even if the difference is that one is physical and the others might be emotional or mental?
personally, if someone attacked and beat up dr. phil, i’d, too, be laughing my ass off because he’s just as annoying to me as is the no-ron.
of course, i use “beat up” in a relative term, since it seems that the no-ron wasn’t roughed up that badly, according to reports and doctor’s statements. it might be worse, granted, but i’ve yet to see or read that it’s so bad physically.
i suspect that it could be more that the no-ron is embarrassed that he couldn’t defend himself against someone apparently so feeble-minded.
Thank you, one and all, for your kind compliments.
I don’t care for the guy either - can’t fucking stand him, actually - but this kind of attack is messed up. If you or anyone you care about has ever been attacked for no reason by a deranged person, this kind of story isn’t quite as amusing as it might initially appear. (Those who enjoy the kind of combined stomach sickening/adrenaline rush feeling that often accompanies a potentially fatal confrontation or accident may beg to differ.) According to the Chosun, No’s attacker had a knife, though it doesn’t seem that it was used, the outcome could have been a lot worse than it was. Again, No is one of my least favorite local entertainers (and, as a rule, I like almost none of them) but if this had been a psycho Korean attacking a foreigner - famous or not - the tone of the comments here might be a wee bit different.

#20: can’t speak for anyone else, but if any one of the irritating non-korean “entertainers” got their ears popped by some dumbass, then i also might find humour in it. i can think of several i’d like to kick in the ass.
the fact of the matter is that we still don’t know why the no-ron was attacked. if he ends up dying from his wounds, then i will humbly retract my disparaging comments and be as publicly mournful as would be expected.
that said, your point is well-taken about being more sensitive to this if we’ve had this happen to someone we know. so true.
“okay, bum, which do you feel is worse–physical punishment or emotional punishment?”
… Isn’t this like “Which one is better, Apples or Oranges?” questions? I can answer it (emotional damage), but I can’t give you a logical reasons as to why.
“…your finding humour in hilton, lohan, or spears’s comeuppance?”
Seeing as I have complete apathy as to what happens in Hollywood (good or bad), I really can’t tell you. Last time I heard about Paris Hilton was when this blog talked about her visits to Korea, and last time I heard about Lohan was about her Monroe photoshoot. Not… quite emotionally damaging incidents, right?
“personally, if someone attacked and beat up dr. phil, i’d, too, be laughing my ass off because he’s just as annoying to me as is the no-ron.”
Okay… and? It’s not about how annoying the guy is (and he is, believe me. Christ, I can’t stand his voice/speech), now is it? Just calling out on how messed up some of the comments are considering the circumstances.
and you’re calling me out is acknowledged and respected. as i mentioned earlier, though, there are some people in the entertainment industry whose ass i’d like to pop (that can be taken in various ways, so have your fun with that!), non-PC as that may be. the no-ron is one of them. dr. phil is another. oprah ranks highly on the list, as well.
i guess my point above about lohan, spears, hilton is that if you’re defensive about comments made about the no-ron’s being attacked, then i wonder why you’re not so defensive about other celebrities who have been attacked, whether physically or emotionally? i made some pointed comments about lohan the other day (referenced her being in rehab, being fugly as hell, among others) and no one said a peep. no, she wasn’t beat up and, yes, she’s brought alot of her emotional distress upon herself, but i still made fun of her pain, no different than i’m doing now with the no-ron.
that’s my point, i guess. why defend the no-ron to my and other’s comments but not lohan to my and other’s comments?
that should be “and YOUR calling me out is…”
“and no one said a peep”
Lol… most likely because I didn’t bother reading the post itself. ^^;
You’re a BAD BAD PERSON!
Is that good?
touche’
and, yes, it IS good!!
where in the states do you live?
AZ. Most of the time, the weather makes me wonder why the hell U.S. fought a war over this horrendously dry piece of land (which, ironically, is actually having a rare case of thunderstorm at the moment). I mean, California and Texas, I can understand (it’s practical), but Arizona? Really?
Umm… So is Mr. Kim’s comment under review or what? ‘Cause it looks like Seth Gecko did beat Mr. Kim to it.
g-canyon
california has dry heat everyday, too. Better weather if near the coast, like San Diego, Long Beach. Shitty dry heave in the San Fernando Valley.
California turned out to have gold, petrol, and other good stuff as well.
I don’t know about Arizona, but maybe they have oil.
Arizona accounts for 2/3 of the nation’s output of Copper, and at one time was the largest cotton producer (from Wikipedia, so… y’know).

If you do, please put it on YouTube and send me the link, would you?

arizona, eh? i’m in korea at the moment, but will be heading home to LAla-land next week to spend the spring in sunny SoCal. i’ll be in AZ sometime during march to watch the NL champion rockies in spring training.
as for the mr. kim/seth gecko debate, i thought gecko had already conceded?
Did I hear AZ? I’m in Phoenix right now (actually Tempe). I don’t know why I still get the French flag next to my name.

Ha! That was an odd thunderstorm, out of the blue. It must have rained for about an hour. In any other state it wouldn’t have made the headline news.
Because you are a Frog?
I don’t get it.
I think it’s wrong to cheer about someone getting attacked even though the dude is annoying.
I remember a shit load of Koreans cheering, laughing and such during the whole 9/11 thing for that matter.
The difference is, people died in 911. It’s always fun to see a star get knocked back to reality.

Not to mention Arizona is also the fastest growing state in the US. And not just because of the Mexican migration. Alot of businesses are coming here due to Arizona’s tax laws, creating more jobs, attracting more people. Rumor has it that Samsung is going to base its headquarters here too.
Frog = French.
It is ironic that you are in the dog meat business considering that one of your well known compatriots do not like the dog meat business.
I’m not in the dog meat business. Nor am I French.
I’m not in the dog meat business. Nor am I French.
OK then why have you linked a dog meat restruant to your moniker?
Andy, I don’t know who you are, but you’re getting way too personal for me.
I like to think that it was No’s trademark scream that alerted the neighbor.
It’s all good “bosh”. Just “punch and kick him for no apparent reason”. Being “mentally unstable” is very *in* nowadays.
“I think it’s wrong to cheer about someone getting attacked even though the dude is annoying”
Hey this article made my day! What the hell are u talking about it’s “wrong”??? What’s wrong is that you think it’s wrong.
It’s not like his face got disfigured or he is permanently handicapped! He probably received a few kicks and punches. No big deal.
Bunch of crybabies. Everyone knows it’s okay to attack celebrities you don’t like, since they’re not real people.
This is basically a subconscious reaction to the White Monkey Syndrome. Expats are constantly talking how they’re being treated like white monkeys by Koreans. Whether they are, in fact, behaving like white monkeys is never discussed, of course.
So in order to feel better about themselves, they find an absurd character from the Korean entertainment world (not a difficult task) for ridicule.
All the other crazy ajossi stories, etc are variations on this.
Yeah Kim, same can be said for you so called Korean victims who say that they are discriminated against in America and else where.
Have you knocked over the wall of Jews that oppose you Korean Nazi there Kim? You spit on any half-blooded babies today? Shoot any black girls in the the back for not stealing?

Bitch-slapping people once in a while–celebrities or not–is necessary over talking to them with civility. You know it, and I know it.
Non-violence? Please! Gandhi was a pussy anyway. Fuck him.
Netizenkim and AussieThunder
Children, it’s not a problem of race. It’s a problem of assholes thinking they can talk/act for the rest of us.
The guy with the road-kill on his head and his friend Spock and that group are on twenty times a day. They’ve got canned laughter in the States, here they’ve got canned whoooOOOOooo! They’ve got their incessant replays of faces agape and then they even go to slow-mo. OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS! And what wonderful sound effects! Nobody saw this coming? I’d say if you subject people to this much of the same crap repeatedly you’re driving people to pneurosis.
This guy Kim should sue the broadcasters for pushing him over the edge.
“Bitch-slapping people once in a while–celebrities or not–is necessary over talking to them with civility. You know it, and I know it.”
I know it. I was agreeing with you. This also extends to bloggers we don’t like or their commenters. We see their work but we don’t know them, so they’re not real people. It’s okay to beat the shit out of them.
What is your name and where do you live again?
“Bitch-slapping people once in a while–celebrities or not–is necessary over talking to them with civility. You know it, and I know it.”
Hell ya. Bitch-slappin resolves fast, saves time, and as we all know, time is money.
