Hanok Masters

If you read Korean, DesignHouse introduces 13 master hanok designers. Well worth the read. DesignHouse has been running a series on hanok (linked at the bottom of the page), and if you have the time, you’ll want to read through it. Very good stuff.

Instead of “Mr. President,” just call me “President”

Lee Myung-bak has asked to be called “대통령께서” instead of 대통령님께서,” dispensing with the honorific 님 but keeping the honorific 께서. This sounds strange to my ears. Professional titles are almost always followed by 님, especially those of people high enough in status or formality to be addressed with 께서.
Long-term residents of Korea might [...]

Yoshihiro Akiyama Bitching About Being Zainichi

If you want to read zainichi judo star and K-1 fighter Yoshihiro Akiyama (Chu Seong-hun) bitch about being discriminated against in both Japan AND Korea, read on.
Frankly, there’s only so sorry I can feel for a guy with such great hair and girlfriend who looks like this (although I’ve always been partial to her friend [...]

Tom Coyner in the KT on Language Use in Int’l Business in Korea

Occasional commenter Tom Coyner has penned a piece on why Korean is rarely the medium of business communication between Koreans and expats. The topic of Korean versus English has been rehashed over and over, but his article provides a balanced view and is worth a read. He correctly differentiates between survival Korean and professional/academic Korean [...]

Hanok Photography and Great Music

Two events you’ll definitely want to check out.
Firstly, at the Art Sonje Center near Samcheong-dong, there’s a memorial exhibit to photographer Kim Dae-byeok through March 5. Kim took some absolutely astounding photos of Korean hanok homes, so if you’re bored this weekend, be sure to see it.
Secondly, on March 14, Jang Sa-ik and Kim Duk-soo [...]

RIP, WFB

As a card carrying-member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, I’d be seriously remiss if I didn’t mention — in sadness — the passing of William F. Buckley… especially after I managed to say something nice when Edward Said passed on.
My brother sent me a link of his debate with Noam Chomsky, and Andrew Sullivan [...]

More on Foreigners and Banking

Next time you’re at the bank and they refuse to give you an international cash card, show them this column from last year’s Chosun Ilbo by Scott Burgeson. If you can’t read Korean, this is the English version (via the Korea Times), although the Korean version is obviously much more useful when dealing with Korean [...]

Korean ‘Neocon’ Drops Out for Unification Post

Nam Joo-hong will NOT be the Unification Minister, it appears:
Nam, a former political science professor at Kyonggi University, has been at the center of a snowballing controversy over his hawkish North Korean stance.
Nam once called the 6.15 Joint Declaration, signed during the 2000 inter-Korean summit, “a document for North Korea’s maneuvering against South Korea.” He [...]

The Spies That Shagged Us . . .

Other than the Daewoo/Burma affair, which was quietly allowed to slip away by Roh’s team, now it seems the NIS probably had a hand in fanning the BBK scandal.

Well, You Gotta Pay for Tuition Somehow

Last week, a 24-year-old American held up a shop at a Jung-gu department store in order to pay his tuition for SNU graduate school.
On the evening of Feb 18, the American — identified as Mr. F — went into the jewelry section of the department store in question and stole some 13.5 million won in [...]

“Spoils of War” or Illegal Gain?

An interesting editorial in the IHT, regarding Russia’s hoarding of 10–15 billion dollars worth of art, taken from the Nazis during WWII, reminds one of other situations, such taken from Korea, by Japan, now a part of China and Russia. If one craves legitimacy, pass a law (Russia) or create a “NorthEast Project“.

New York Philharmonic Comes and Goes, But All Remains the Same

UPDATE: OK, the KCNA piece on the visit was short and not particularly interesting. Basically, the New York Philharmonic came, some North Korean big wigs attended along with foreign dignitaries, and they played these songs (including the Star Spangled Banner). Oh, and the orchestra, “which has a long history and is globally renowned,” played well.

An Association for Foreign English Teachers?

The Ministry of Education may be moving in the direction of establishing “a community or organization” for foreign English teachers at public schools:
Education authorities across the country are scrambling to hire more native English-speaking teachers for their schools. But they are paying little attention to building an environment to encourage teachers to stay here longer.
The [...]

Wonder How the Chinese Will React When Jay Leno Starts Making Them the Butt of Dogmeat Jokes?

French animal rights organization One Voice has launched a pre-Olympics campaign calling attention to Chinese zoo conditions and the slaughter of dogs for consumption.  There is an online petition form that will go straight to the desk of His Excellency, Hu Jintao!  The audacity of One Voice in demanding that China treat animals better than its [...]

Where to Satisfy That Craving for Endangered Species in Korea

For two months running now, the Joong-Ang has printed articles lamenting the depletion of certain marine life, only to then accompany that article with a list of recommended restaurants where the reader might avail him or herself of dishes made with that species.
Read the rest at the Idiots’ Collective.
