Korea NOT a Sex Tourism Destination

You’ll be happy to learn that the Congressional Research Service has removed Korea from a report listing major sex tourism destinations in Asia. No word yet on whether the CRS has apologized to Congressmen who arranged for junkets to Korea after reading the erroneous report.

Diplomats Criticize Descriminatory E-2 Visa Rules

Envoys from countries excluded from the list of countries whose nationals are eligible for E-2 visas want are complaining. Those sounding off include the ambassadors of Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and India, nations that have adopted English as an official language but whose nationals may not teach English in Korea. Current regs allow only nationals [...]

Alrighty Now…

As GI Korea says, this is the weirdest defense in a rape case I’ve ever heard.

Yonhap Reports that Not All GIs Suck

Yonhap reports that Koreans are getting the warm fuzzies after reading how two US soldiers helped rescue three Koreans following a car wreck in Wonju. Unfortunately, Yonhap learned of it only because they read it in Stars and Stripes. Out of curiosity, I wonder if this is a report taken of the same accident.

LMB Proposes to Let Gov’t Hire Foreigners to Important Policy Posts

In a meeting with leaders of the Democratic Party today, President-elect Lee Myung-bak said he would push for changes in Korea’s civil service law to allow the government to employ foreigners as civil servants in important policy making positions.
Lee Seung-hee (that would be the DP lawmaker, not the Playboy model) noted that she’d brought William [...]

RAS Lecture on Korean Racial Attitudes / Hines Ward, and some Mid-Winter Tours

Upcoming Royal Asiatic Society–Korea activities of interest to M-holers:
Tonight!!  Dr. Lee Yomee (sports-sociology prof at State University of New York, currently Fulbright Scholar at Yonsei Univ) will give the second RAS Lecture of the year, on one of the M-Holer’s favorite subjects: “Hines Ward –His Impact on Racial Attitude among Koreans”.  She will take a fascinating scholarly look at what [...]

Marmot’s Open Thread #34

Remember, play nice.
PS: Bobby Fischer is dead.

Yeah, I’d Hold Off on That Schadenfreude, Too

Don’t get me wrong — I fully agree with what the Chosun Ilbo’s Park Jung-hoon suggests — it’s bargain time in the United States, and if Korean firms can take advantage, more power to ‘em. It’s better than putting the entire country in hock to the Bank of China. It’s just that, well:
There are plenty [...]

Hey, Who Said You Could Map Dokdo

The Joongang is reporting that the Japanese government had made detailed maps of Dodko(pic below), and that the Korean government isn’t doing anything about the matter.
According to the Joongnag, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport used the ALOS(Advanced Land Observation Satellite) and American satellite data to survey Dokdo and produce detailed 1/25,000 scale maps of [...]

Never Mind The Benz, Dutch Thieves Prefer VW

Couldn’t help but throw this up.  It seems that Dutch thieves have been taking a more conservative, albeit fool-hearted, approach to swiping road vehicles as of late. Essentially, the short article merely sheds a little light on a few figures and states that a large percentage of the nabbings occured in Amsterdam (go figure)… but scroll down to the top 10 and you’ll find [...]

Korean Wins Ford Modeling Content

Korean modeling student Kang Seung-hyun has been named Ford Supermodel of the World 2008. She’s the first Asian to take the award. Coincidentally, in 2004, a Kenyan model with the name of “Ajuma” competed in the contest.

Hana Linux: the Road to Korean Reunification?

Will a jointly developed version of Linux bring the two Korea’s together?

SES Kicks White Ass

Music video of SES’s single “U” released way back in 2000, with scenes showing the members tormenting white guys. Now that I think about it I remember reading an editorial in the Korea Times or Herald, where the non-Korean contributor stated that he (she?) was disturbed when he (she?) watched the video.

Hope You’re Enjoying Your Stay

Lone Star chairman John Grayken will have more time to take in the sights of Seoul courtesy the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office, which has extended his travel ban by 10 days.

Apology Diplomacy Over?

President-elect Lee Myung-bak said that for a “new, mature Seoul-Tokyo relationship,” there would be no more demands for an apology from Japan.

Put That In Your Pipe and Smoke it Facebook!

Just when you thought the whole realm of cyberspace couldn’t get any more intrusive, alas we have broken some ground again! Only this time, it goes well beyond the constraints of your monitor and into your, uh, trap…   The new venture even sends the kit to your doorstep prepped for action… Don’t ‘add’ me, baby - [...]

Teenage Pimps and Wonjogyoje, Ft. Worth-Style

Sometimes, you just have to shake your head. Incidentally, the crew was busted after they took a 14-year-old girl to a convenience store to have sex with the owner, an alleged regular whose name I shudder to reprint here. Oh, and in other fucked-up news from the great state of Texas…

I Guess He’s Serious About This Whole ‘Small Government’ Thing

President-elect Lee might like his waterway projects grandiose, but he likes his government small. And to prove it, Lee’s transition team is going through government ministries like a bulldozer through an elevated highway, axing five ministries along with three sub-organizations and — best of all, perhaps — a ton of presidential committees.
The Chosun Ilbo headline [...]

That’s Not Funny . . .

As per yeinjee, MBC has fired their news anchor, Moon Ji-ae after she was criticized for laughing at the end of a live news broadcast on January 7.

Lee Promises Help to Buddhists

President-elect Lee met with Korean Buddhist leaders yesterday to tell them he would take measures to preserve Korea’s Buddhist cultural heritage. Well, I only hope he does, because there are still some bitter memories from the last time a Presbyterian elder was president of the country.
