Boeing to Donate One F-15K to the ROKAF

Boeing plans to throw in a F-15K for free, as part of the deal that will see 20 more F-15Ks inducted into the ROKAF.  This will replace the F-15K that crashed into the East Sea, a few years ago.  Not so fast, says the Seoul Shinmun.  According to it, there is a very big chance that the plane will not [...]

I Guess Geometry Really IS Useful

God, I hope Seo Kyoung-duk hasn’t seen this “Bizarre Japanese Sexual Harrassment Training Manual” post — poor man will have a heart attack (HT to Boing Boing and reader)

That’ll Teach Him to Refuse a Drink!

Two construction workers have been arrested on suspicion of beating their coworker to death because he wouldn’t drink with them.

Tuna Is Too Heavy . . .

Heavy as in terms of mercury.  According to the NY Times, Bluefin Tuna sushi — regardless of the source — has exceptional levels of mercury that were high enough to warrant action to take it off the market.

Hey, at Least the Defense Minister Loves You

Defense Minister Kim Jang-soo has sent letter of appreciation to two GIs who rescued three Koreans after an auto accident in Gangwon-do.

Teach in English

The Transition Committee has hinted that subjects other than English, such as math and science might be taught in English.  So does this mean that we’ll see a market for non-Korean, English-speaking science, math, social studies, etc. teachers?

A Sight for Sore Eyes — at Last

LMB’s transition committee seems to have a plan for “seeking harmony and balance in urban areas and buildings by introducing the concept of public design.”  Called “Design in Korea”, the idea is to have “architecture and urban design subcommittee under the State Architecture Commission”.  They even have plans for nation-wide bike paths!
Finally, a plan that [...]

Google Earth in the Spotlight

Google Earth is getting some media attention here in Korea, after a netizen discovered that some S. Korean locations were marked as N. Korean.  The locations cited are Ongjin, Baegryeong-do, Daecheong-do, and Socheong-do.  Google Korea responded by stating that “it had not been able to update Google Earth, since it had not received map data from the Korean [...]

Korean-Americans Learning English, Korean

In the WaPo, Pamela Constable goes to Fairfax, where older Korean immigrants are learning English, while their American-born children are learning Korean:
The Washington region’s large Korean American community, long one of the area’s most organized and affluent immigrant groups, is moving belatedly but aggressively to break through its final barrier to successful immersion in American [...]

Flavor of the Month

As per a quote from President Roh, “Lee Myung-bak is repeatedly calling for a revival (of) the economy, (while) the South Korean economy is not dead. Why does he want to revive something that has never died?” Somebody must not own any stocks or have read this.

And the World’s Most Expensive University is…

Immigration Office to Ease E-2 Rules?

The Commissioner of the Korea Immigration Service, during an interview with the KT, said that Seoul plans to issue E-2 visas to “foreigners whose countries adopt English as an official language.”  However, he didn’t give any specifics on when this plan will be implemented.

I Won’t Sign That

Outgoing Pres. Roh has indicated that he might veto LMB’s proposed plan for restructuring of the government ministries, which was submitted to the National Assembly.  Roh described the plan as “unfair, undemocratic, and rushed”  and added that “as a President who has to sign the law and take responsibility for it, I have to worry about it, since it is [...]

Asiana wins best cabin crew award

Perhaps this is an excuse to revisit an old debate about who gives better service; young Asian sky waitresses or 40+ western professionals.   On the other hand the results are based on an on-line survey, so must be taken with a grain of salt (a lesson Ron Paul supporters should note).

Huh in Hot Water

Prosecutors have applied for an arrest warrant against Huh Kyung-young for supposedly violating the election law and defamation of character.

How Fucked Up is Korea’s English Teaching Racket?

This is fucked up — meet Mark Thomas, a Briton who next month will graduate from the English education department of Hanguk University of Foreign Studies. The Hankyoreh reports that Thomas — who has completed his practicals and will become the first foreigner to graduate from a Korean teaching program — spotted an ad on [...]

For the Love of God, Not Natto!

The KT reports that the “Japanese Wave” is taking root in Korea, and among the hit cultural items is natto. Which, I’ve got to say, I can’t stomach. Cheonggukjang? OK, it smells like a rotting corpse, but it’s yummy. But natto? I guess it’s an acquired taste.

Do the Brains of Westerners and East Asians Work Differently?

This is already getting some play in the comment section, but it really deserves a separate post.
Two very smart people from MIT have turned up research results that would seem to suggest that Americans and East Asians may, in fact, have different brain activity patterns:
Neuroscientists Trey Hedden and John Gabrieli of MIT’s McGovern Institute for [...]

Ministry of Funny Names

The English names of the new ministries have been released. Enjoy. (HT to reader)
