I’ve been in NYC for six weeks this trip, and I’m happy to say it’s been all Not Korea All the time. That being said, this article is a truly challenged introduction to New York’s Korea towns - one giveaway being the writer’s apparent inability to get much beyond HanGawi and “Woo Lae Oak” in the resto recommendatons.
Yea, the writer probably half-assed researched before trying out the restaurants. Some of them are ok but he/she missed a lot of the better ones.
BTW, if anyone recommends WooLaeOak to you, he/she does not know what Korean food is supposed to taste like. Holy s**t, it is by far THE worst Korean restaurant I’ve ever been to. I tried it in both Chicago and NY (Dont ask me why I fell for it the second time. As Bush would say, “Fool me once…” Oh whatever). I know it’s supposed to cater to non-Korean customers, but come on! Even Taco Bell tastes like authentic Mexican compared to what WooLaeOak is supposed to be.
I would seriously look the other way if some Korean nut job beat the living crap out of the owner/chef for “disgracing” the Korean culture.
And yet the article made it to the most emailed list, and somehow “Korea” was #10 today on NY Times searches.

My friend once made the mistake of thinking he would get authentic Korean food when he walked into a Korean restaurant in Canada. When he asked in Korean why the menu and the recipes were so different from what he had grown to expect, the waitress replied in English in a hushed voice so that the other customers wouldn’t hear, “Sorry, but we aren’t in Seoul.”
