Upcoming Royal Asiatic Society–Korea activities of interest to M-holers:
Tonight!! Dr. Lee Yomee (sports-sociology prof at State University of New York, currently Fulbright Scholar at Yonsei Univ) will give the second RAS Lecture of the year, on one of the M-Holer’s favorite subjects: “Hines Ward –His Impact on Racial Attitude among Koreans”. She will take a fascinating scholarly look at what the phenomenon of this half-Korean-half-black “sports celebrity” was really all about, and the lasting impact it’s had on Korean social attitudes. Sure to be interesting and controversial!! 7:30pm in the Resident’s Lounge of the Somerset Palace Residence near Anguk Metro Station, as usual. Free for Members, w5000 donation requested from others.
Sat January 26th: Winter Break Tour – Gwangneung and Sanjeong-ho Lake This excursion will help to cure the case of “cabin fever!” Our tour will take us to Gwangnung, the tomb of King Sejo and his queen, located in the picturesque National Forest Reserve, and the enchanting Sanjong Lake to enjoy skating and hiking.
Sun January 27th: Sogni-san National Park Tour with Beobju-sa Temple Today we’ll take a bus to visit Beobju-sa, one of Korea’s largest and most-scenic Buddhist temples, site of the only surviving five-story wooden pagoda and also Korea’s largest standing bronze Buddha, set against the stunning natural beauty of Mt. Songni.
Sat February 2nd: Sobaek-San National Park Tour with Huibang-Sa and Guin-Sa Temples After a bus-ride down thru the scenic Jecheon / Danyang region, we’ll take a pleasant hike through the scenic Sobaek-san National Park, visiting the historic temples Huibang-sa (with lovely icy water-fall) and Guin-sa (Cheontae Order; biggest non-Jogye-Order temple in Korea!).
Sun February 3rd: Jeonju Area Tour with Moak-san Geumsan-sa and Hansol Paper Museum We will head to Moak-san Provincial Park, where we will visit Korea’s largest ancient standing broze statue at Geumsan-sa (recently featured in beautiful photos on this blog) and then the Hansol Paper Museum in Jeonju, where you can make a sheet of your own mulberry-fiber paper. Led by long-time expat Daniel Adams!

Sounds interesting, but I’m skeptical as to how “the lasting impact” can be assessed less than two years after he was named the Super Bowl MVP.
And, I think it should be “Hines”, not “Heins” Ward.

As for the “lasting impact” — yeah, clearly she means “so far”. In the days of my youth scholars of history and society would wait ten years after the dust settled to study something, but now everything’s speeded up and all perspectives are shorter-term…
