His collection is diverse, and he certainly enjoys experimenting with black and white images. However, if you shoot dozens of arrows, a few will manage to hit the bullseye. The standout shots are lost among the very large collection of nice photos that could have been taken by anyone fairly skilled with a camera and blessed to be able to travel to foreign locales.

Oh, look. Bicycles lined up against a tired-looking brick wall in a Chinese hutong. Have one like that in my collection. The Shanghai Pudong skyline. Check. Juxtaposing of something traditional and something modern. Got lots of those from Asia. People shots - kids playing, couples strolling, men laboring, oh, look at those graceful grannies doing taichi. Maybe I’m too cynical from years of taking and looking at travel photos, but the only unique photo was the unexpectedly b&w shot of backlit tree blossoms in hues of gray.

The basic techniques of photography are not difficult once you understand them, and he does. Composition, waiting, and luck are the other factors that come into play. He’s got some very nice photos- I stumbled onto them a couple weeks ago when doing a search.

The problem of cheap quality cameras is that, like Sonagi, many people have similar shots in the same places. When you’re not a local, you end up walking down the same streets and into the same buildings.

I don’t think Robert’s calling him unique- just good and worth looking at. I agree.
