In case this article in the KT left you totally bewildered, what they are talking about is a change to the Korean spelling of English loan words, such as changing “오렌지(orange)” to “오린지.”
“It is difficult for Koreans to pronounce English words like native speakers as long as the Romanization remains unchanged,” Chairwoman Lee Kyung-sook of [...]

If you’re going to turn Korea into the best English-speaking nation in Asia, you need teachers.
Problem is, Korea doesn’t have any. Or perhaps better put, it has English teachers. Plenty, in fact.
They just can’t speak English.
Anyway, LMB thinks ethnic Koreans overseas might provide part of the solution by coming back to Korea for a year [...]

My brother reviews “Cloverfield.” I think he was a bit disappointed:
A good idea is at the heart of this film, that idea being to make a vérité creature feature: Blair Witch meets Godzilla, in Hollywood pitch meeting parlance. Document the peaceful denizens of a city as they come under attack by a monster of [...]

If anyone is interested, i will be the chatty guest on Arirang TV’s 30-min “Heart to Heart” interview show at 10:30 pm tonight (Thursday); it’ll be repeated a few days later. I was there to talk about my teaching, research, speechmaking and writing on Korea’s religious-tourism opportunities. We taped it last Monday — yes, i had to [...]

Speaking with transition team officials today, President-elect Lee Myung-bak dropped a head-scratcher, saying it was “wrong for the English public education issue to become politically contentious.”
Well, OK, but when you push English education reform as a “Second Cheonggyecheon,” with (albeit backtracked) talk of even English immersion programs, wouldn’t you expect a little controversy? Just a [...]

MCNBC’s Roland Jones takes a look at Korea’s bold move into the Brave New World of the US luxury car market. The money shot, though, is this:
Mark Rechtin of trade publication Automotive News referred to the “scary-good Koreans” at the show and singled out the Hyundai Genesis, a new rear-wheel-drive, full-size luxury sedan due to [...]

In a briefing today, the spokesman of President-elect Lee Myung-bak’s transition team called Lee’s English education plan the “second Cheonggyecheon,” a turning point that will lessen private education fees and strengthen national competitiveness.
All I know is that I find it beyond comprehension that foreign language education has become a matter of national life and death. [...]

Hot on the heels from an endless string of forgery cases that took the peninsula by storm last year, KBS found it in themselves to question the academic validity of this one particular American college claiming that the university appeared to be a “phony school whose name was not found on any website of reliable agencies, such as the [...]

If Korea got its “Saving Private Ryan” with “Taegukgi,” it will soon get its “Band of Brothers,” too.
Logos Film announced yesterday that it will soon begin production of “Road No. 1,” a 10-part miniseries dealing with the Korean War.
The title refers to National Road No. 1, which ran from Seoul to Pyongyang at the time [...]

French director Luc Besson has apparently made fun of Korea — again. And Korea Herald columnist Kim Seong-kon isn’t happy about it. He writes:
Luc Besson’s “Taxi” is so popular that many people around the world have seen it. Perhaps Koreans gravely underestimate the impact of the silver screen, but “Taxi” has devastated the image of [...]

Now, I realize IE 6 doesn’t do transparency, so the banner looks a bit funny. I’ll try to figure out a solution to this, but to be honest, I have no idea why anyone would be using IE 6 when you [...]

A kindergarten teacher in Itaewon has admitted to OhMyNews that she did, in fact, punish a 5-year-old girl by making her stand naked on a fire escape in the middle of winter.
The teacher, it should be pointed out, apologized for her actions, saying it was a momentary thing done out of anger and disappointment. She [...]

Brian Lee of the JoongAng Ilbo has an excellent article on the Korean arms market and, while the article highlights the quality and capability of Korean manufacturers, it also shows how arms manufacturers also engage in shady and illegal deals with the wrong countries, such as Burma (Myanmar) and Iraq:
Just last November, the former president [...]

Will the Korean and US navies start playing together in the Indian Ocean? Perhaps so. Citing a local news report, Mingi Hyun blogs that the ROK Navy has for the first time stationed one of its commanders at the US 5th Fleet headquarters in lovely Bahrain.
This is particularly interesting as it may reflect a move [...]

I am trying to organize an informal get-together for lunch and watching Super Tuesday primary returns. Wednesday, February 6 is the first day of the Seollal holidays, so it would be a good time to enjoy lunch and a beer or two in a half-empty city.
As for a location, I am currently looking into the VFW lodge [...]

And do the Norks not lie about everything all the time?
I assume that anyone who follows Korean news knows who Jay Lefkowitz is. If you don’t, you can blame the Bush administration for that. After naming him as the American special envoy for human rights in North Korea, the administration and the folks at State have [...]
