A man in his mid 30s hit two ROK Marines with his white Korando, stabbed one several times, and ran off with a K-2 automatic rifle, 1 hand grenade, 6 rifle launched grenades, and 75 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition. One of the Marines is receiving treatment in a hospital, but sadly the other Marine was killed on the spot. My condolences to the family of the fallen Marine and I hope that they catch the guy.

My condolences as well. What’s the guy gonna do with those ammos? Hope they catch him before he does something more sinister.
Man that’s sad. It seems sometimes that people here don’t appreciate the folks in uniform.
They got bushwacked from behind by the jeep, and one was killed immediately. The other dazed one who got thrown to the ground, refused to give up his rifle while the ambusher stabbed the soldier multiple times. This went on for 5 min. and finally the ambusher gave up and instead took the weapons from the dead marine, then took off.
so that’s why the donghodaegyo was militarized this morning.
Sad story. I hope they catch the guy really quickly. I can recall at least one story of bank robbers in Korea having stolen rifles from military personnel. I think a couple of years ago someone was shot (fortunately survived) with a stolen K-2 during the commission of a bank robbery. (Maybe in Chungcheong-Do?) There’s the more disturbing possibility that the guy is really nuts and is planning his own Election Day massacre or something equally messed up.
They found the jeep, in Hwaesong (spelling) area it was torched, also reported stolen back in October. Osan AB has restricted access off-base to official travel only. Hope they can find this nut case.
It’s unfortunate someone was killed, who is the suspect? Is it a Korean man? If so, he may not have intended to kill anyone (no excuse nor should it be considered in the court of law as a motor vehicle is a weapon). Like most Koreans, he will confess to the murder in the future. Murder is the exception to Koreans confessing to crimes.
#6. The stabbing and theft of rifle, ammo, and grenades following the assault with the vehicle might be a little difficult to explain. If he is caught and confesses, I’m sure his hard life, economic misfortune, and lack of fairness in Korean society will be among the most likely excuses for his actions.
There are a couple of interesting points about this story. He felt he had to to take the rifle, ammunition and grenades. Initially, this makes me suspect some sort of disgruntled soldier or something similar. He stabbed a ROK marine to death, and ditched his ride and set it on fire. He made a mad dash south and has so far managed to avoid the bulk of the country’s law enforcement and military. These details definately make me suspect NK SOF, not to mention the espionage alert. Is this the beginning of a new round of SOF activity in SK? Should be interesting.
Explain? All you need to do is show up in court with a hospital gown, wheel chair, maybe an IV drip and everything will be forgiven.
…and don’t forget to smile as you extend your hand holding a roll of Mentos.
#6: “Is it a Korean man? If so, he may not have intended to kill anyone.”
But if it isn’t a Korean man, then he intended to kill someone? Where does nationality play a role in this case?
It was a Korean National, the police suspect a 2nd individual is involved. Seems like someone with another vehicle was waiting for him, when he torched the jeep.
lol, I read the same line.
“Explain? All you need to do is show up in court with a hospital gown, wheel chair, maybe an IV drip and everything will be forgiven.”
That trick doesn’t work quite as well if the criminal in question isn’t a major corporate executive or lawmaker.
Yeah, I haven’t heard of that ever gettin’ a commoner off the hook…

We are in Korea, when doesn’t nationality play a role? And, most Koreans admit to murder, people of other nationalities usually don’t. Sorry, but nationality matters when talking about murder.
“Korea’s armed forces at 6:30 p.m. issued a “Jindo Dog One” alert” (from the Chosun Ilbo)
Jindo Dog One! The Korean system of alerts are cool.
Marines in this country are as good as they come.
Sad story – I hope the criminal is shot soon.
And please let it be some nut, not a spy.

So Koreans are even morally superior murderers?
Given that Canadian English teachers don’t drive in Korea I think it is most likely the driver was US military. He was probably so drunk he mistook the Korando for a taxi, and the ROK marines for a couple of little girls.
Do shut up.
“Given that Canadian English teachers don’t drive in Korea I think it is most likely the driver was US military. ”
The surviving victim probably identified the assailant as being Korean, Sherlock.
PS. I’ve been driving on Korean longer than most Korean drivers and I’m a Canadian English teacher.
Correction…driving on Korean roads…
#17,
I would prefer it was a spy than a sicko.
If it’s a spy, it probably just a ploy to influence the elections. If it’s a sicko, he’s probably planning to do something much worse than that.
Good people make good Marines. I am very sorry to read of the fellow’s murder.
I note that Yonhap reports that some presidential candidates are worried that the weapons may be used against them. That may be since most politicians really are expendable. The murderer has skills, motivation and help. I would be worried too if I were the police and military during a presidential election.
Oddly though, the whole thing reads like a movie plot. Weird . . .
My heart goes out to murdered ROK Marine, Park Young-chul, and his family. Hope the other victimized soldier get recovered soon.

Basically you’re saying that a drunk US Army grunt was capable of neutralizing 2 ROK MARINES. Yeah, you’re a moron.
“Marines in this country are as good as they come.”
Well, yeah, but if you had served you’d know that the Marines aren’t any different than any other soldiers. There’s a wide variety of people in the Marines, many of which aren’t exceptional athletes. Heck, I had a student, a rather bookish kid with thick glasses who couldn’t have been more than 115 soaking wet who left school and served in the ROK marines.
“The murderer has skills”
He ran two guys over with his car.
#26.
Thirteen years ago, when I was filling in the enlistment form for the ROKN, I remember a kid with glasses coming up to the recruiter (the ROKN guy also handled the ROKMC) and asking for the ROKMC enlistment form. The recruiter took one look at that guy and told him to buzz off. When the kid asked why, the recruiter simply said, “You’re wearing glasses.” Now about a third of the Marines that I see on the street wear glasses.

You missed my point.
I have no association with the military nor do I claim to.
#28,
Yup. It’s the same problem everywhere: fewer kids to pick from so the standards have been relaxed in order to meet the quotas.
“someguy”, you are not reading the reports. Some things I have read suggest that the guy has training and not just in driving a car.
#29….
I missed your point? It seemed clear enough to me.
“Well, yeah, but if you had served…”
#31,
You’re joking, right? How much training do you need to run people over with a car and stab them while they are down? So, the guy new something about the K2 rifle… Just means he served in the Korean military like most men his age.
19, yes I know you are joking here, but just for the record, only E7s (staff sergeants) and above can drive here, unless they are on an accompanied tour (brought their family from the States), which precious few are.
“Well, yeah, but if you had served…”
Then what?
“only E7s (staff sergeants) and above can drive here, unless they are on an accompanied tour (brought their family from the States), which precious few are.”
If young GIs were smart enough to know not to join up, they would also be more likely be smart enough to use a condom. Unfortunately, many of the trailer trash/college basketball scholarship wannabe defenders of the realm that have the fore foot at freedom’s frontier are cannon fodder fuckers from francia por ebonia sisteria liberti via egalitaria…
at least thats how the mall scraps that serve the US military would verse it.
Personally, I think it best that licenses be granted to serving US personel (ie, E7 or above…) that are expected to carry their genetic products in a common vehicle at threatening velocities in an otherwise hostile environment.
The spawn of scum should not be allowed to benefit from their parents’ misadaventures.
““Well, yeah, but if you had served…”
Then what?”
Now read the rest of that sentence, Einstein.
Somebody’s itching to get banned.
#38,
Yeah, he’s pretty transparent.
Point I was making about the Marines: bravado aside, they are no better or worse than other soldiers. They simply play a different role and, at least in Korea, they lucked out because they get to experience a degree of tradition that is sometimes lacking in other units. One thing, though. The bravado can come to haunt them if they ever have to go in combat because the ‘toughest’ ones generally are those who are the most affected psychologically. I guess that may also have something to do with why the Marines nowadays aren’t really after the alpha-males.
