May his bones rest in peace, all 206 of them, could it be that there was at least one that remained unbroken at his death?
I tried looking in the wikipedia article to see, but couldn’t find an itemized listing for the status of each of “dem bones”. However–
The wikipedia article is quite extensive and is clearly the product of a a fan; though some references are footnoted, a certain amount of “wikiskepticism” may be warranted for many of the anecdotes. Nevertheless, some of them may serve to make you gasp with laughter:
“…Robert Knievel was born in Butte, Montana [in 1938…Knievel dropped out of high school after his sophomore year and got a job with the Anaconda Mining Company as a diamond drill operator in the copper mines. He was promoted to surface duty where his job was driving a large earth mover. Knievel was fired when he made the earth mover pop a motorcycle-type wheelie and drove it into Butte’s main power line, leaving the city without electricity for several hours.
With a lot of time on his hands, Knievel began to get into more and more trouble around Butte. After one particular police chase in 1956 in which he crashed his motorcycle, Knievel was taken to jail on a charge of reckless driving. When the night jailer came around to check the roll, he noted Robert Knievel in one cell and William Knofel in the other. Knofel was well known as “Awful Knofel,” so Knievel began to be referred to as Evel Knievel. The nickname stuck….”
And for you unrepentant secular humanists here, Evel’s late-breaking conversion to Christianity earlier this year may serve as a wake-up call. Think of it as first-hand testimony from one who literally spent his life suspended between heaven and hell:
Did anyone here attend the Town Hall meeting for foreigners yesterday afternoon at City Hall? I hadn’t registered in time for a seat and didn’t have time to hang around to see if they’d get down to me on the waiting list, but I’m curious what issues were brought up and how the whole thing generally went.
Author Stephen King suggests Jenna Bush be Waterboarded.
“So I said something to the Nightline guy about waterboarding, and if the Bush administration didn’t think it was torture, they ought to do some personal investigation. Someone in the Bush family should actually be waterboarded so they could report on it to George. I said, I didn’t think he would do it, but I suggested Jenna be waterboarded and then she could talk about whether or not she thought it was torture.”
So my dad just told me a rather amusing anecdote… When he was five (… 1964, I think), he lived near the Pyongtaek army base. One day, his mom brought home a big canned food with a picture of tomato on it. They opened it up, thinking that it had tomatoes, but found a red, slightly pulpy liquid-gel. He tasted it, thought it was too sour and thought “Man… why would Americans eat tomatoes like this?”. Now that he thinks about it, the red substance was a can of… Heinz Tomato Ketchup.
D’Sa is of Portuguese-Indian origin, like - De Souza - not uncommon among the inhabitants of the fomer colonial and Catholicized state of Goa on the west-Indian coast.
TNA Wrestling and Canadian/Korean Knockout Gail Kim has been selected as one of the top 40 bachelorettes in the United States by Forbes.com a division of Forbes magazine. #4 Here’s the Joongang’s writeup of the town hall meeting. Good thing I wasn’t there - I hate it when people tell me to get my motorcycle off the sidewalk.
I revisited a movie called IndoChine, which was shown obligatorily by my high school French teacher as a form of demonstrating Sparkling France in analogy to the Korea, Sparkling.
Two things I realized.
This Vietnamese girl was about 19 when she was in this movie.
The old white lady was about 50.
Well, in the wjk way, wjk came to his wjk conclusion, that indeed Koreans are more moral than the avg westerner.
This 19 y/o girl was asked to do gratuitous breast baring scenes by her French director, and was featured in 1/4 of the film with no bra.
The theme of the story is white man loves south east asian girl.
A French Lt. can’t help himself from passionately falling in love with a teenager and a woman in her 50s (even in the movie plot)
First of all, 20s man really having a genuine love for a 50s woman is considered the “socially outcast” form of love in Korea. Like having sex with your mom. This is apparently acceptable in some circumstances in America. Katie Holmes. Tom Cruise. Ashton Kutcher. Demi Moore. Name a Korean celebrity couple that does this.
2nd of all, for all the claims that Koreans have more gays than they admit or that most Korean boy band members are actually gays stuck in the closet, please take a look around at the western society first. Priests having anal sex with boys? Boys claiming to be gay now, because they were sexually sodomized as boys? This is for one reason or another, rarely talked about in Korea. Maybe because it happens with less frequency. I don’t hear much of SamChon banged me in the ass and now I’m gay tales. Maybe it’s the soy. And take a look where males acting like females are more accepted. I would say southeast Asia more so than northeast Asia. I don’t care to venture why.
3rdly, I realized that my French teacher somehow skipped all the boobie shots when this was shown in a high school class. People remember things they saw quite clearly.
#28,
Boy, do I wish I had been there. Let me know when the next one is held. I have a very pertinent question to ask, nothing about scooters on the sidewalks and people spitting in the streets (I wish people would waste such an opportunity by whining about such petty things. It makes the expat community look bad and it gives the reporters the opportunity to bury the important issues).
Any guesses what percentage of the posts to this thread wjk will ultimately make? This post is (I expect) #33, so with six posts he’s currently running at 18%.
I am instructing 22 Koreans that are preparing to leave soon to work abroad. They are going to different countries and this is a first time experience for many of them.
Based on your experience, what serious advice (no jokes, please) can I give them to help prepare them to live successfully outside their home culture?
Have them practice introducing themselves. Teach them to initiate the introduction, step forward, give a firm handshake, and make eye contact.
Get them up on their feet and have them go around the room in pairs and introduce themselves and a partner. It’s been a fun activity in my classes.
Come up with a list of English names and have them each choose one. Foreigners are likely to be more comfortable talking to someone whose name they can easily pronounce and remember.
#32. There’s nothing petty about people - Korean or foreign - complaining about not being able to walk safely on sidewalks. The blatant disregard of drivers for the safety of pedestrians is a major problem. The unwillingness of police to enforce Korea’s traffic laws is nothing short of obscene. I hope that more people (at the risk of making themselves look bad?) let it be known that the situation as it exists now is unacceptable.
In addition to the danger posed by motorcycles (and sometimes cars and trucks) operating on sidewalks, it is one of the most obvious areas where Korea clearly has the appearance of a developing nation, not a developed one. Right or wrong, I suspect that the shame of looking backwards in the eyes of the international community might be more of an impetus for change than safety itself. (World Cup time bathroom improvements seemed to be motivated by image, but would also appear to be better in terms of hygeine, etc.)
Thanks to your own personal biases, you’ve totally misunderstood this film. Had you interpreted the film correctly, I’m sure you would have liked it a lot more.
The film is actually about the colonial-imperialist paradigm, the ambivalent attitude that France had about its colonies, the struggle between the romantic interpretation of French colonialism and its harsh realities.
The subtext was inspired by “Procès de la colonisation française” (Trial of French Colonization), an article published in 1925 and written by none other than Ho Chi Minh. It also refers to the writings of Lucien Bodard, a Chinese born French author who was very critical of France’s role in Indochina.
You also misinterpreted the characters.
The French lady is a metaphor of those affected by what the French called ‘le mal jaune’ (a double entendre referring to expatriation in Asia).
The naval officer is a caricature of the French colonial administration. His actions and words express the events that have led to the Indochina War, as written by Lucien Bodard.
The daughter represents Indochina, the victim of colonialism.
Maybe, but I had to reply. He/She made the mistake of mentioning something that I know a great deal about: French cinema.
PS. The woman WJK called the ‘old white woman’ just happens to be Catherine Deneuve.
I think WJK is ignorant of the facts women are perceived by some, particularly in France, to be sexually attractive long after their 20s. Catherine Deneuve symbolizes ‘French elegance’ on and off screen and, for the last 20 years, the sexy older woman. Kim Hye Soo is trying to cultivate a similar image, as a matter of fact.
#1 Missouri got pwned by #9 Oklahoma today in the Big XII Title Game — 11-2 Mizzou will not be playing for the BCS Championship. This may be the end for me. Goodbye, cruel world!
Thanks for the pointers on soy the other day. I followed the references you provided, and they made for interesting reading. It seems that the principal problem is not necessarily with soy itself, but with the manner in which it is cultivated and processed. Since I ingest a significant volume of the isolate form of it, along with even greater amounts of whey and casein isolate, I’ll have to keep an eye on developments. Don’t fret too much, though; I also eat large quantities of “natural” proteins - a relative term, since Korea doesn’t seem to offer many opportunities to get genuine free range anything - and vast amounts of green (and other color) vegetables, of which Korea seems to produce acceptably untainted versions, if you look carefully. I’m still avoiding carbs, at least in the form of grains, potatoes, etc, relying on the other veggies to provide the necessary minimums. Anyway, you might find the following interesting; the first includes some footage of Mary Enig:
I just want to be clear about this: I am always mindful of the safety of pedestrians when I ride, whether on roads or sidewalks. Unless they have a Canadiens insigina on their backs. Then they become targets.
Japan has the highest or one of the highest average life expectancy in the world, and they eat mostly…white rice! The sticky kind! That’s why they live so long, ’cause the Portuguese have a similar diet, without the rice, and they don’t live as long.
The secret is eating a lot of white rice…and some vegetables here and there maybe…or no, it doesn’t matter. Not too much fruit or milk either, and believe me, ’cause when I first when to Japan and saw ‘dem teeth, I thought there was a mass outbreak of scurvy. So, a high carb diet of white rice is the way to go. And a bit of fruit.
Now, some might wonder why Koreans don’t live as long, when they eat a similar kind of rice. It’s the kimchi and mass salt I tell ya, but the crazy ajummas never listen…they never listen…always about how it protected them against SARS. Kimchi won’t save ya… only white rice…is the way to go.
Some Latin American friends of mine in Korea made the same observation that in their cultures, women remained sexually attractive into their thirties and forties while marriage and motherhood seemed to neuter Korean women. I think this started to change with the “Missy” movement several years ago. Married women started wearing their hair longer and their skirts shorter. At school events in China, it was easy to distinguish the Japanese from the Chinese from the Korean moms. The Japanese mostly looked like frumpy housewives, the Chinese like aging Vegas stars with their flashy, spangled clothes, and the Koreans smartly dressed in sleek skirts, sweaters, and pumps. The men on staff thought the Korean moms were the hottest.
Korean men seem a little more open-minded about Western women. Several North American friends in their late thirties and early forties had Korean boyfriends in their twenties.
i thought the world was very good to you, Mr. Carr.
Mr. Koehler, with all due respect, and having seen portions of the mentioned movie, I would dare say that while in IndoChine, this romance is never looked down upon by anyone much(in the movie),
the romance between the Chinese man and the French or Belgian teen was looked upon with pure disgust by her mother, her 2 brothers, and possibly herself until perhaps the very end, when she was old and recalling things with a bigger picture. I think the only one in pure love was the Chinese man, and the girl justified the relationship somewhat, saying to herself it was for money and money alone.
Hat tip to Mr. Baduk, one of my recent great influences in life in general.
when did Camille of IndoChine or the perverted French Lt ever mention money in the relationship? Never.
Maybe your brother can watch both and write something better about it.
I’m just writing what I think.
Someguyinkorea, name a Korean star couple with 50y/o woman, 20y/o man.
i only saw a portion of the film mentioned by Robert. My sister was really into it, for some reason.
fertility is at its peak during the 1st half of the 20s.
women are setting themselves up by delaying birth, telling themselves that 30 is the new 20, 40 is the new 30, 50 is the new 40, 60, I can still give birth, etc.
Actually, your ovaries never got that memo.
Age 35+. Advanced Maternal Age.
If I were a woman,
1/Give birth before age 35.
2/Don’t tie the tubes. Take ocps.
3/don’t have sex with any man who slept around a lot. HPV.
“the romance between the Chinese man and the French or Belgian teen was looked upon with pure disgust by her mother, her 2 brothers, and possibly herself until perhaps the very end, when she was old and recalling things with a bigger picture. I think the only one in pure love was the Chinese man, and the girl justified the relationship somewhat, saying to herself it was for money and money alone.”
Actually, Annaud (the director) made up the part about the Chinese man loving her. He was more interested in causing trouble with his family by rebelling against he confines of Chinese society than anything else, in reality. The author of the autobiography also makes it clear that she wasn’t motivated by love either, but by her will to take control of her life. She thought that the first step in doing so was a physical one, sexual intercourse. The Chinese man, the real one, got married and converted to Christianity, by the way.
“when did Camille of IndoChine or the perverted French Lt ever mention money in the relationship? Never.”
You’re reaching. Besides, did it occur to you that what money symbolizes (loss of innocence, envy, power, subservience, whatever) in one movie could be represented by something else in another?
The interpretation of the film Indochine that I provided is correct and accurate. I suggest you reread it.
“fertility is at its peak during the 1st half of the 20s.”
When do men and women’s ‘peak sexually’?
“Someguyinkorea, name a Korean star couple with 50y/o woman, 20y/o man.”
Shouldn’t I be asking that to you? After all, you’re the one who called the beautiful and elegant Catherine Deneuve an ‘old white woman’. Oh, and reread my previous question about sexual peak. It’s relevant to the point I’m making here.
#58,
Did it occur to you that maybe she doesn’t want to have any children?
Hines Ward just caught a pass in the end zone from Roethlisburger (sp?) (NBC Sunday night football).
His 63rd TD which ties him with former Pittsburgh Steeler wide receiver John Stallworth for the all-time team record.
What’s that you say? No mass celebration ongoing in the streets of Seoul? Well, a quietly satisfied smile by Koreans everywhere (accompanied by an upraised glass of soju) is the “class” way to celebrate.
Approx quotes of comments by John Madden: “I’ve never seen a guy smile as much as Hines Ward…you can’t give him that slant pattern [as a defender] because he’s just too strong a receiver…I’m sure John Stallworth would congratulate him because if your record is going to be broken you want it to be by a guy like Hines Ward…”
Fox News, eh? If an old refrigerator for beer chugs away in the Canadian wilderness without Fox News covering it, it still makes a sound [and emits quantities of CO-2 that evidently suffice to horrify a British researcher or two].
Scientists have found a new threat to the planet: Canadian beer drinkers.
The government-commissioned study says the old, inefficient “beer fridges” that one in three Canadian households use to store their Molson and Labatt’s contribute significantly to global warming by guzzling gas- and coal-fired electricity.
“People need to understand the impact of their lifestyles,” British environmental consultant Joanna Yarrow tells New Scientist magazine. “Clearly the environmental implications of having a frivolous luxury like a beer fridge are not hitting home. This research helps inform people — let’s hope it has an effect.”
The problem is that the beer fridges are mostly decades-old machines that began their second careers as beverage dispensers when Canadians upgraded to more energy-efficient models to store whatever Canadians eat besides doughnuts and poutine.
University of Alberta researcher Denise Young, who led the study, suggests that provincial authorities hold beer-fridge buy-backs or round-ups to eliminate the threat — methods that Americans use to get guns off the street.
So, while writing belated essays for my POS 364 (National Security and International Terrorism… keep in mind I’m a BioSoc major, so I have all these random req for graduation), I looked up an article from Economist about Anbar and found a link to this blog. The photo/youtube entries are simply amazing.

well also in the film, a rich Frenchman apparently is getting a 2nd kick in life by having a young sexual companion who is south east asian.
thru out the film, there is no mention of east asian man having relations with french woman.
when the French Lt asks the 50y/o Frenchwoman, if she’s bothered by the way the yellow men stare at her, she says,
“why should I? They’re my coolies, and I’m their boss. I don’t care.”
actually, this reflects what is acceptable in western europe at that time, 1992.
white man can have yellow girl.

this film won an academy award.
apparently, it didn’t bother ACLU that much at the time.

Men love women. But women love money.
Beware of women who pull up skirt in front of you. All she wants is 50% of what you have and will make in next 20 years.
Find a good woman. Don’t mess with the trash.
Which would explain why in that same year, French director Jean-Jacques Annaud did “The Lover”:

#1 Missouri got pwned by #9 Oklahoma today in the Big XII Title Game — 11-2 Mizzou will not be playing for the BCS Championship. This may be the end for me. Goodbye, cruel world!
#45,
Which is very different than the novel, namely that the author makes it clear in the original story that the relationship was not about love.
Sonagi:

Missouri was outcoached because the Oklahoma Coach is from/played in Iowa and people from Iowa are smarter than those in Missouri.
Why does it have to be white rice?

Doing business in South Korea is nearly the same as in China. The only difference is the cost of labor.

Brits get rich in China or not…
It’s a great documentary about the new “Wild, Wild, West…or East.”
HPV.
fact is, Hye Soo, is more likely than not to fail to reproduce and create someone who looks like her.
#56,

Our favorite multiple poster and med school imposter appears to be unfamiliar with the “Old Mistresses’ Apologue,” penned by America’s greatest sage.
our favorite jack of all trades and questionable lack of any degree in nutritional sciences never fails to promote not eating carbs.

Don’t worry, I promise to use these powers for good.

i guess Lee Myung Bak’s Christian background goes out the door, huh?
Thief. Lier. Hypocrite. Snake.
Nice going. Honor everyone else, except Jesus. Mo’s followers are doing some ethnic cleansing in Darfur right now.
Same ol’, same ol’ as Yugoslav. Same as beginning of World War II as well. World “leaders” preferred to watch.
Darfur. 2 reasons why no one wants to jump in.
1/Muslim.
2/Africa.
Someguy, you’re saying anectdotal conversations w/ some guys about the war in Yugo makes the Yugo war
1/ a media fabrication?
You’re insane, dude.
Someguy, so Bosnian War, Iraq War were both artificially induced, right?
Smoke some more bong. Maybe you’ll think clearer.
you may have heard of the curse of Blow-Rod and Schilling’s bloody Red Sock.
“Someguy, you’re saying anectdotal conversations w/ some guys about the war in Yugo makes the Yugo war

Not one guy, every former Yugoslav I know.
I was in the Canadian army. How do you know I wasn’t there?
Insane? Coming from someone from the lunatic fringe? I take that as a compliment.
“Smoke some more bong. Maybe you’ll think clearer.”
I’ll leave the drug taking to you. It obviously doesn’t help your arguments, so why should I bother?
Hines Ward just caught a pass in the end zone from Roethlisburger (sp?) (NBC Sunday night football).
His 63rd TD which ties him with former Pittsburgh Steeler wide receiver John Stallworth for the all-time team record.
What’s that you say? No mass celebration ongoing in the streets of Seoul? Well, a quietly satisfied smile by Koreans everywhere (accompanied by an upraised glass of soju) is the “class” way to celebrate.
Global Warming is caused by Canadians, according to Fox News.

HW just caught #64.
This is some morally superior Christmas caroling, albeit bluesy:

They get to bash Canadians and make fun of ‘global warming’ scientists in one stroke, it’s a double whammy for Fox News.

So, while writing belated essays for my POS 364 (National Security and International Terrorism… keep in mind I’m a BioSoc major, so I have all these random req for graduation), I looked up an article from Economist about Anbar and found a link to this blog. The photo/youtube entries are simply amazing.
