Follow Music, Follow Elegance:
FREE Korean Traditional Performance for Foreigners (Dec. 8,15 at 3pm)
Seoul Selection is back with another great Korean traditional music program. “Follow Music, Follow Elegance: Korean Traditional Performance for Foreigners” will be held at Museum Cafe Gogungddurak, National Palace Museum of Korea at 3pm, Dec 8 and 15. The 2007 Korea Music Festival, hosted by Arts Council Korea, gives foreigners a unique opportunity to appreciate some beautiful Korean traditional music and learn about the traditional sounds of old Korea.
The main program of the Korea Music Festival will feature performances by some of Korea’s top Korean traditional musicians. The first part of the program will delight audiences with a performance of gagok, a vocal genre using sijo (Joseon-era poetry) and much appreciated by scholars of old Korea. To be performed will be “Cheongjoya” and “Sarangeun Chanchan,” with vocals by Hwang Suk-gyeong. This will be followed by a gayageum solo to be performed by Jung Gil-seon of the Gyeonggi Traditional Korean Music Orchestra. Haegeum virtuoso and cross-over musician Kang Eun-il will also take the stage, while finishing the main program will be pansori diva Chae Soo-jung and drummer Choe Gwang-su performing a selection from the pansori favorite “The Song of Heungbu.”
The program is the same for the Dec 8 and 15 performances.
The musical fun will be accompanied by tea, rice cakes, Korean snacks and a lecture on Korean culture and music. Lastly, there will be a short tour of the National Palace Museum of Korea. The program is free — send an email to music@seoulselection.com to make a reservation. Include in your email the date you’d like to attend, your name, nationality and phone number (preferably cellular). Families are welcome!
For more information, call (02) 734-9567. To get to the National Palace of Museum, just leave Exit 5 of Gyeongbokgung Station, Line 3 — the museum is on the grounds of the Gyeongbokgung Palace.
The event is organized by Korea Music Festival, Seoul Selection and Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, and sponsored by the Prime Minister’s Commission on Lottery and Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

You know you want to go. You really do.

Now here is something that even I, on even a really, really bad hair day (yeah, Brendon, the ones in and on my ears), can recommend unreservedly, if even if just to hear Kang Eun-il work her magic on the haegum again. The best part of the ill-fated - journalistically-speaking - Follow Music, Follow Elegance: Korean Traditional Performance for Foreigners” trip to Chongju organized by Seoul Selection last year was the discovery of Kang, but the other performaces then were equally inspired, as I have no doubt those on the current program will be.
I’m an ear-hair fetishist. I’ve got four pairs of tweezers between my office and home office. Distressingly, I find I must use them more and more.
Then you’ll understand why I like the haegum (Chinese counterpart is named the erhu).
yes, yes I do want to go. I’ll be there!
A YouTube link would really be a welcome addition to a post like this! Any takers?
