I love the way the author puts quotation marks around the word their as in “”their” candidate”… as if it’s some kind of joke that a KorAm would be supporting a Korean politician… Is the word 우리, of “우리나라” so exclusive?
It comes across as pretty insulting (and pathetic), IMHO.

#1 seriously. sometimes i wonder what kind of half-assed “journalists” work at chosun ilbo. i’ve personally written a number of complaints to them. (i’ve yet to get any response from them, of course.)

I can kind of see the point of the quotes since they can’t vote but are still interested in the outcome.

They can’t vote, but they can help the campaign. It even says in the article that they’re raising money in the US to send to candidates. Moreover, they surely have relatives back in Korea and can try to convince them to vote for one or another candidate.

    The quotation marks are useless.

Well when you take into account the fierce regionalism that pervades South Korea’s politics and the fact that “우리나라” has been divided into two countries with the most heavily fortified border in the world between them, then its easy to imagine that “우리” could be exclusive enough to just mean your immediate family and a few close friends.
