Koreans have a horrible time with their police force too. Like the public prosecution, the Korean National Police is an organization designed to oppress rather than to serve.

I blame Japan.

Metropol's experience makes one realize that all Korean reports of foreign crimes should be taken with a very big grain of salt.

The military keeps lowering it's standards to met recruiting needs, and this is what they get.And some people STILL claim that we shouldn't be dogging America's Best And Brightest.
Okay, okay. I know not all GI's are idiots, but why not throw a few blatanly guilty assholes to the wolves as an example.Maybe a few more would take the hint.

This is why we need mandatory military service for all Americans. Now the only people who sign up for the army are complete idiots who have no better alternatives. Not only would mandatory service mean we would have not gone into Iraq, it would also mean we would have better representatives (ambassadors?) abroad in times of peace.

"He probably would have been better off simply attacking the drunk guy."

And leaving the scene ASAP. Anyway, it is easy to speculate about "what if" and "should have" scenarios, but these incidents happen in real time and there are plenty of variables involved. Hope it works out for him.

There are and always will be bad apples in any group. Military personel are no different. The S&S story in #10 is totally believable. My Korean female friend in Daegu is married to an African-American GI and she says they have gone through a lot of shit because of the locals. I find it hard to believe though because Koreans are so nice to foreigners.

#9: Thanks. We still haven't heard the suspects' side of the story, but it looks like the Stripes is at least trying to get more details.

One reason why I'm skeptical is the old #2 line subway incident of 1995.

Korean media version: Drunken MP touches "hip" of innocent Korean female on subway, valiant Korean male comes to the rescue, gets punched by said MP for his troubles, mob brings MP group to justice at nearby police station.

Stripes version: MP defends Korean wife, whom he has just touched on the ass, against Korean male who spits on her and calls her every name in the book by socking him in the face, then in misguided attempt at seeking justice, the off-duty MP group willingly travels to the nearest police station to sort it out.
