My wife watches KBS gameshows via internet all the time.

This violence to women is part of two misogynistic trends:

1. Homosexuals are in the Barney Miller Show "queers are just clowns" stage on TV... They're just "gag men" my wife says... Koreans don't like that yet...

2. There is a rapidly growing Muslim influence (witness the "Bank of Korea -- Muslim" sign on the old Bank of Korea building in Namdemun...

The severe antagonism towards Evangelical Christians is another symptom...

This tale sounds very familiar. My time in Korea has been studded with similar unexpected cultural surprises to be sure. Any westerner with some exposure to life on the peninsula knows what I'm talking about.
Admittedly, Korean society consists of a wide variety of people and attitudes ranging from the ethically impeccable to the truly criminal, and behavior ranging from cutting in line to the awful story at the heart of this discussion.
I hope discussions like this and the exposure to Winter Raymond's example have the effect of raising awareness and support for a Korea that can make badly needed progress toward a society that is much much safer for and more respectful of women.
In spite of the relatively proud nature of Korean society I know Koreans to have a great capacity for internal shame. Unlike life in the West, it is a society which is anything but guilt-free. Koreans should choose to bring painful news of this type out in the open where it can become a compelling reason to upgrade the behavior of men toward women.
This has to be the single most important step Korean society can take.

The medical establishment in the United States is partly checked by fear of lawyers. They can't be horrible to patients, because a jury will award damages for "outrage" and emotional distress. Such damages are not available in Korea at all. I believe that an atmosphere of impunity does much to encourage laxity and downright meanness.

@91,
 I'm in Dubai.
@92,
 I hope and assume the volume of my experiences are unusual. What about my experience at the hospital regarding my insulin? Her medical treatment, or lack thereof, is another part of the problem she was talking about, but nobody has really touched on it here. Maybe it's because most people don't have any serious experiences with the medical establishment here, but to me that seems to be something that really needs to be addressed.

#88:
Winter, thanks for sharing your experience with the Korean public, and with us. Sharing that must have taken courage, and I think it helps to expand Koreans' understanding of conditions for non-Koreans here. I agree with your sentiments about 'the system', but also think that we are in changing times (see below). I hope that you'll continue to speak your mind about those events, as it will ultimately help us all.

#90:

I really know jack about Korea outside of what I read and I’m not getting the sense that Korea has all the neccesary social networks in place to bring about change...

abcdefg, your impressions about the state of social services available here are correct. One of my sisters-in-law got her master's in social work at Yonsei and is now in a doctoral program at Rutgers; from her, I've learned a lot about the state of social services provision in Korea. Generally, the agencies available are poorly funded and so are underresourced. As you might think, there are caring and concerned people who'd like to help, but they are not always adequately prepared to do so. Staff may have experience in handling problems (and unfortunately not enough do), which is to say that they may have dealt with the same problems before. But they are not always educated about how to do their work in ways that are more supportive and effective for the people they are trying to help.

Really, however, Jamila's Korean-language communication is not 'very Korean' so much as it is charged with a sexual energy which is basically absent from most Korean females' regular speech and mannerisms. That's why she had the guys going in the audience, despite knowing only a smattering of Korean. Frankly, most Korean women here don't talk or act as she does.
