So Much for ‘Saying What You Need to Say to America’

Discussing the Iraq War in a radio interview, President Roh pulled off the nearly impossible feat of making Paris Hilton look smart. (HT to Lost Nomad)

Can Bush please withdraw his request for the Korean troops in Iraq?

I would say he “Spoken like a true Lame Duck”… but lame duck doesn’t begin to approach the level of irrelevancy Noh has attained. He’s speaking as if his term has already expired.

I can’t believe anyone would stoop to ridiculing the “expert” in dealing with North Korea, especially after his record of successes. Oh, wait, he’s the ROK President, not a DPRK diplomat… oh.

irrelevancy? for the most part i agree but the problem is that even though people in washington know that he’s a lame duck and an asshole, they also know that a good portion of koreans likes any kind of comment that disses america. sorry, don’t know precise numbers but the anti-americanism trend here is pretty well established. bottom line, comments like this don’t get forgotten just because the administration changes.

Hmm… Korea just opened it’s first oil field IN IRAQ!! I wonder if this has anything to do with Korea supporting the war? No, I’m sure it has nothing to do with it. What a bunch of hypocites. It’s time for the US and it’s military to pull out of Korea. Forget about the FTA and South Korean security. Stop wasting money and materiel on a nation that should, after almost sixty years, be able to defend itself. Again, I like what David Hackworth had to say about the US military in Korea. China and India are the future so focus on strenghtening ties with them.

Actually, they haven’t “opened” one yet:

    November 12, 2007 13 23 GMT
A South Korean group led by Korea National Oil Corp. (KNOC) has won exploration rights for an oil field in the Kurdish controlled region of Iraq, Trade Arabia reported Nov. 12, citing a local newspaper. The field is estimated to hold 500 million tons of energy reserves. KNOC said exploration at the Bazian oil field in Arbil will begin in January 2008.

May be a reason for optimism breaktrack. The need to safeguard Korean oil exploration operations may bring the Zaytun out of a passive reconstruction role and into an active patrolling pattern in Kurdistan.

I guess we’d have to look at a map and see where the oilfield is; once that’s known, then look at a situation map to see if there’s been a pattern of Al Queda/insurgent attacks in that area. Whether up-to-date info of that type is available anywhere on the internet (ie, outside the situation map room of local/national coalition HQ) is a good question.

Of course, if we find out in a few months (or in a few days) that the plan is for local and extended security for the oilfield is to be provided by the Kurds, I guess we can both go back to being cynical again. And lest anyone think that’s a reason for schadenfreude on my part, not so; one of the many reasons I visit here is I’m curious about the state of morale/esprit de corps of the Zaytun. I figure any reporting on that subject is likely to be in Korean and would be noted here for this non-Korean speaker — but I suppose this is a story that is unlikely to be welcomed as a subject by the ROK government or media.

To put a fighting unit of any spirit in a combat zone, and then keep them basically confined to barracks — while boasting to the world about how their own country is doing so much to help its “ally” — is not something calculated to enhance such fighting spirit. IMO of course, as I’m not a fly on the wall of the compound there.

Shame on the ROK government for putting them in that position (and on the Bush administration for tolerating the pretense for its own political reasons). Better to bring them home and put them in a mission posture where they can do something that’s important for their country and that they can believe in — regardless of how much “extra” pay and benefits they can get by serving in the Zaytun.

My mistake Paul. However, winning the rights to explore for oil is a bonus to Korean participation in the war. If that’s what you want to call it. I want the US out of Korea for the sake of the US, NOT KOREA. Again, I’m very proUS.

    . . . and as per Korea.net:

Roh appeals for global support of Yeosu’s world expo
President Roh Moo-hyun on Monday (Nov. 12) appealed to the global community to support the Korean city of Yeosu’s bid for the World Expo in 2012, saying a Yeosu expo would contribute to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The same, lame approach that failed for the winter Olympics. It seems that everything and anything can “contibute to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.”
Mr. Roh or someone working for him is a PR nightmare.

#23: I can say that “peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula” is not in any way shape or form part of the Yeosu Expo PR plan. North Korea doesn’t get one mention–either directly or indirectly–and the last thing you want to do is remind the delegates of the nearby presence of Little “I’m So Ronery” Elvis.

Either Roh-nothing or a minion was off script. Either way, it’s one last “F-You” before riding off into the proverbial sunset.

“Do you have blacks too?” OMG, that’s horrible. This gaffe shows more than limited awareness of the world (”Keep good relations with the Grecians”- Economist,June 12, 1999), it indicates that Bush sees himself as having more in common with the white Brazillian than with American blacks. It’s probably not that hard to find some good speach writers when you’re the President of the US. Ultimately, though, the buck stops at the top - that uneducated guy is the “decider” who got us into this quagmire in Iraq.

Well that’s the most imbecilic thing I’ve heard all day. Its you that piss on history by giving strength to the lie. The crimes of 9/11 have had far-reaching effects; on Canada, the Middle East, and much of the godless world, and it is premised on an outrageous deception.

You’re entitled to your delusions but don’t go telling others you hold monopoly rights on history: THAT is rude, buddy.
I have family in the US and I’m bloody-well concerned about what’s going on.

You don’t have to agree with me, but your knee-jerk insults are a clear symptom of hysteria and brain-washing. Learn some moderation. The consensus-reality should always be questioned. Particularly when CIA veterans dispute the official version of history:

Raymond McGovern, former Chairman of the National Intelligence Council and 27-year CIA veteran, “I think at simplest terms, there’s a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke.”

What evidence do you have “CG” is Canadian?

After CG’s latest transmissions, I think it’s “Silly Sally”, formerly of GI Korea blog! Come on Sally, is that you? Be honest, now.

If it is — I wish you’d resume your “SS” handle, old dear. I kinda liked it as reminiscent of “Axis Sally” — the only thing missing was the good big band era music.

“She” used to switch handles over there fairly often as I recall (haven’t been visiting the GI much lately, got out of the habit when he changed his format and I was unable to post comments).

You can’t disguise your “fist”, Sally. The more you transmit the more you reveal.

“daft”, “bloody-minded” — that’s not typical Canadian everyday discourse, is it? (You tell me, Canadians). I think we’re talking likely a resident of the UK — & I think I recall something in a GI Korea comment about “her” being from the subcontinent (or of that ethnicity). This would certainly help to account for the obsession with 9/11 conspiracy theory.

“So” (you may ask me skeptically) — “what’s ’she’ doing on Korea-related blogs”? My impression from her GI comments was one of a former ROK resident.

If it is Sally, she’s indefatigable — like a case of extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis. The only solution (if you’re aggravated) is the classical one of “quarantine” (definitely not banning, though).

She’s too articulate for a ban to be considered proper and just. After all, good quotes, spelling, & grammar can (& should) carry one a long way in this life. Let these qualities be weighed in the balance, when it’s time for the final reckoning.

Man the girl is so liberal its funny. Every time someone asks for proof she says, “‘Cuz, I feel so strongly about it, my feelings transmutate my feelings into fact.” I love how she attacks everything, everybody, and every race on planet Earth. This girl has no love, no soul and no passion. So different from Sonagi who although liberal is well reasoned, gets facts to support her position and tries hard to make planet Earth a better place to live in.
