Chung’s Grand Railway

There’s Lee Myung-bak’s “grand canal”, now Chung Dong-young has unveiled his answer to the canal, the “grand railway.”

United New Democratic Party (UNDP) presidential candidate Chung Dong-young pledged Thursday to construct 1,175 kilometers of railway lines.

His grand plan is apparently aimed at competing with the canal project proposed by leading candidate Lee Myung-bak of the Grand National Party (GNP).

The TV anchor-turned-politician claimed his project will connect Seoul with Pyongyang, and Busan with Paris, which will be enhance the nation’s presence on international markets, especially Europe.

I’m sure he has permission from KJI to build the “grand railway”?

Well I guess it was a matter of time before the election campaign degenerated into a mine’s bigger than yours thing.

1 globalvillageidiot November 9, 2007 at 11:21 am: I don’t like Chung, but it isn’t as moronic as the canal idea. Yet, not unlike his education plans, he’s a little vague on the details.

Building more rail won’t change the fact that the trains would still be blocked at the DMZ.

I’m sure Kim, Jung-il or China wouldn’t mind the rail being called that. What or who could possibly save Korea?

8 sewing November 10, 2007 at 2:21 am: It is already theoretically possible to run trains from Busan to Beijing, Budapest, Barecelona, or even Birmingham; or from Mokpo to Moscow, Madrid, or Manchester. There would just be the small consideration of, er, a “fee” for running rights north of the DMZ….

I think you’d hit an awful lot of North Korean tunnels if you did. Most of their factories, the few that they have, are said to be underground.
