The left is as divided as ever

It’s looking more and more like Lee Myung-bak is going to be facing two or three “major” opponents in the December 19 elections.
Sohn Hak-kyu finally wins something.
Sohn Hak-kyu won the “cell phone primary,” of the United New Democratic Party (AKA: UNDP or Uri 2.0) beating Chung Dong-young 7,649 to 7,004. Lee Hae-chan came [...]

Korean, Ahem, Units Getting Larger

Oh, the things you learn when your country of residence hosts a conference on size standards for condoms:
“Demand has been growing for years for unified international standards on the size and quality of condoms to ensure users are protected from disease and women from pregnancy,” Unidus chief Kim Sung-Hoon told Yonhap news agency.
“The size of [...]

(MUST SEE) Korean War in Color!

If you haven’t seen it yet, be absolutely sure to watch the footage from “The Korean War in Color” posted at GI Korea.
It’s absolutely amazing.

Of Failed Marriages, DNA and the US Embassy

I was following a link over at GI Korea when I happened upon this human tragedy in the making:
CAMP CASEY, South Korea — As it stands now, John David Ruiz isn’t a citizen of any country.
John is the newborn son of Camp Casey transition center employee Juanito Ruiz, a former soldier whose application for his [...]

Koreans, Latinos Working Together to Build a Better Workplace

A couple of days ago, the WaPo took a look at improving workplace relations between Koreans and Hispanics in the Washington DC area. Give it a read — here’s just the intro:
At Korean-owned Super H Mart in Fairfax, where Hispanic workers bag groceries and Korean employees run the tills, a window into the increasingly diverse [...]

Crap On North Korea

No, I’m not suggesting you defecate on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
Instead, I refer to new items pertaining to North Korea.
In the IHT, Richard Bernstein suggest the US deal with North Korea was a “compromise.” Gee, you think? But more importantly, it looks at the Bush administration’s switch from refusing to even talk to [...]

Also, [...]

Youtube Meets AdSense

Google has just introduced video units into its Adsense program, which — as the good folk at Google say — gives you video content for your site AND earns you some extra revenue at the same time.
The service is not yet available for netizens based in Korea, unfortunately, but I’d imagine it will be soon.

Nissan Cars Coming to the Dealership Nearest You

As of October 2008, Nissan plans to sell its own cars here in Korea. The models that are being imported are the SUVs Rogue and Murano (pics below, the Rogue is the SUV on top) and the Altima sedan.

Personally, Nissan cars coming to Korea is good news, because it means more choice to the [...]

Seoul Unveils Water Taxis

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will begin operating 7-seat water call taxis (pic below) on the Han River from Oct 11th. Since there is rarely any traffic on the Han, a trip from Tkukseom to Yoido is expected to last 15 minutes.

Sounds interesting, but here is the catch. The fee for the trip costs 5,000 to [...]

Cry me a river

Taxi drivers in Korea have a certain… uh… reputation. While I am quite sure that it is only a few proverbial bad apples, we all know what the same proverb says. Accordingly, there is something delicious about this story. Even more so when you remember that it’s a two way street, and nobody is sticking [...]

American Dies at Incheon Airport After Service Staff Block Rescue Personnel

Service staff at Incheon International Airport yesterday essentially killed a 48-year-old American man who’d collapsed in the airport’s baggage terminal when they prevented emergency rescue personnel dispatched from the airport fire station from entering the arrival concourse.
A witness said emergency personnel tried to enter the arrival concourse to assist the man, who’d stopped breathing, but [...]

LG Unveils Touchscreen Phone

In a previous post, I mentioned the release of Samsung’s “iPhone Killer”.  Now LG has unveiled its answer(?) in the form of the Voyager(pic below).

Like the recently unveiled Samsung home, the Voyager also has a QWERTY keyboard in addition to the touch screen.  It also has a vibration feature;
Another impressive feature of the Voyager is its vibration [...]

TBS Needs Help

Radio station TBS needs two people to handle a special English language travel program they’d like to do weekday mornings. They’d need you for about 15 minutes, 8:30 to 8:45am, Monday through Friday. They also need someone for another program, “Seoul Chic,” which will cover health, mass culture, food and entertainment, and would run Monday, [...]

Jinhae Post Office and Black & White Teahouse

I attended a colleague’s wedding in Busan on Saturday, so I figured while I was in the area, I’d pay a visit to one of my favorite ™ spots — the old Jinhae Post Office.
Jinhae is a pleasant little port town about 40 minutes by bus from Busan. The Japanese developed the town as a [...]

RAS Lecture on Kor Psychology, and Fall Tours

Well, my own RAS Bukchon hanok-neighborhood walking-tour back on Sept 2th was pleasantly successful, and ditto for my SIWA walking-tour of the Sajik Dan-gun Ceremony and Shamanic Shrines of Inwang-san on Gaecheon-jeol (Oct 3rd), despite the heavy gray sky.   So, with that promising start we can look forward to a better-weather autumn for experiencing Korea’s best…  Here [...]

2007 Baekdu-daegan Expedition Progress

I’m just back from spending two days with Roger and Andrew, at Suanbo Hot Springs and in western Worak-san National Park — in some truly beautiful weather at last!  They did not do anything special for Gaecheon-jeol Holiday, but have been enjoying some great times along their way.  Their health is good and their spirits are high, making some [...]

My Personal Take on the Chaebols

I’ve noticed that the Korean chaebols are more or less like the Mafia. One might ask Korean chaebols and the Mafia? For eight years now, I’ve been able to observe the inner workings of a chaebol companies and have met a lot of people who have shared some interesting stories. What I’ve noticed is that [...]

Sorry… More Summit Notes

More summit notes. Because there’s just so much crap out there.

Is Kim Jong-il hitting the sauce again? Novelist Jo “We Koreans Suffered 10 Times More than the Jews” Jung-rae (I really need to stop making fun of him for that, lest readers forget he’s actually a really good novelist, regardless of his politics), who was [...]

Another October Anniversary Remembered

The Lhasa Riots in October 1987 were not well covered in the Western press but here is a riveting narrative of one observer and why the Chinese Communist Party is on my list of latently violent organizations.  Perhaps other concerned Koreans could take up this issue with China — if they have the nerve, that [...]
