Man Attempts Bank Robbery to Go to Prison

by mins0306 on October 23, 2007

An unemployed man in his 20s has been arrested for trying to rob a KB branch in Suwon Station.  He was apprehended by bank security guards, who promptly turned him over to the police.

The guy in question wasn’t wearing a mask during the robbery attempt, and during police questioning was quoted as saying that he attempted the robbery because life was hard and thought that going to prison would solve his problems.

Now I’ve heard a lot of people trying to avoid prison, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a person wanting to go to prison.  Maybe he’ll change his mind, when he sees this.

A shockingly large number of Koreans in the turbulent times attending the transition from Unified Silla to Goryeo, the Mongol Invasions, the Red Turban incursions and the Wako pirate raids voluntarily enslaved themselves to local and metropolitan members of the aristocratic/bureaucratic and military elites – who, in the meantime, also were not exactly shy about coercing anyone else they could into hereditary servitude.

This guy’s objective of going to prison is a little odd by today’s standards, but the reason for committing the crime – having a hard life – is the usual explanation offered these days by Korean degree forgers and serial killers alike.
