The guy should be shot and pissed on!

“The guy should be shot and pissed on!”

What if he likes that sort of thing? Wouldn’t want him to die happy would you?

Hope he gets put in general population of a particularly violent prison.

Got a question for anyone who understands Korean society, especially someone who is Korean. I remember the numerous apologies I received from Koreans after the Virginia Tech massacre, and I’ve been thinking about the lack of compunction and guilt I feel about this pedophile working in South Korea (but certainly not lack of pathos). Putting aside the question of whether I, as an English teacher in Korea, should or should not apologize, I’m much more interested in whether Koreans see it as a negative that I haven’t or won’t apologize. Any thoughts?

Yeah, don’t apologize. I’m not going to. I’d be more than happy to slice that guy up slowly though if I had the chance.

To Granfalloon

Why? The job was his. Not much related with his job as an English teacher. If any relation, it’s more with teaching job. So, teachers, all foreign and Korean teachers should feel sorry.

As for Jo, he has maladjustment problem as an immigrant from Korea.
(I don’t know he has retained his Korean nationality.)

Nobody in Korea would expect an apology as long as the guy didn’t molest any Korean kids. To paraphrase Kanye West, Koreans don’t care about Thai people.

On a related note, I don’t think there’s as much of a hysterical revulsion for child molestors in general in Korea as there is in the West.

I wouldn’t say that’s exactly good, but I do wonder if this story would have gotten as big if the guy photographed himself killing an adult.

He had retained it, in spite of his entitlement to US citizenship…

The only thing Koreans love more than receiving apologies is demanding apologies.

11 a-letheia October 19, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Living in Korea means never having to say you’re sorry.

#4: No offense, but I saw your comments and then your avatar and I had to laugh.

13 seouldout October 19, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Not quite. Living in Korea means your apology is dismissed as insincere.

14 otoritakeo October 19, 2007 at 11:23 pm

So off topic.. again.

Thank God that paedophile was caught.

BTW- Sincere apologies are a great way forward. Ask the Australian Aborigines, Native Americans, Koreans, etc. If only they did recieved *sincere* apologies…

15 otoritakeo October 19, 2007 at 11:23 pm

* receive

Speaking of sincere apologies, isn’t it about time we invent some sort of metric to ascertain JUST how sincere an apology really is? I dunno, mega-culpas or something. With a tool like that we could have sorted out the tank incident of 2002 with a lot less ill-will an drama.

Imagine the press if this guy had been an American English teacher in Korea….. I suspect the press coverage would have been different. As it is, only ONE paper English-language paper this morning is covering the news that he has been caught…

18 kpmsprtd October 20, 2007 at 12:56 pm

I’m glad the guy was caught, and if proven guilty after a fair trial, I hope he gets put away. My twist on it is that I would like to execute the dumbass reporter as well.

I am sorry to be the one to bring this up but I don’t see how this should have international coverage.

There are freaks, weirdos, psychos, and sickos all round the crazy world of ours – sadly this guy is just a drop in the bucket. I feel that the only reason he is getting the coverage is that he is a complete dumbass for posting the pics on the net.

The ones who do not do dumb things and continue unchecked in their sick ways are far more sinister and dangerous to society at large. However, I guess those ones are too difficult to catch and don’t offer the feel good story of taking a (sick) dumbass into custody.

I hope he gets what is comning to him but this situation certainly does not deserve the coverage it is getting.

20 a-letheia October 20, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Seems like the wide coverage is due to the technology that un-swirled his face.

21 wookinponub October 20, 2007 at 6:38 pm

Excuse me for being a novice, but if all he did was swirl the pixels, why is it presented as an Olympic Effort to unswirl them? Glad he’s caught, of course. They should ‘rendition’ him to get info on his buddies.

I think a lot of people are asking that, especially considering all they used was Photoshop.

23 mateomiguel October 22, 2007 at 11:33 am

Using computers is hard guys.

But I also suspect that the reason this is getting so much media attention is due to some kind of internet superstardom. Maybe his photos were the content that kept pedophile newsgroups and web sites alive. Maybe he was a household name among pedophiles, as it were.
