As was widely reported yesterday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il didn’t appear to be particularly excited upon meeting President Roh yesterday.
This is probably understandable, as there are a good many South Korean politicians, including some of his erstwhile political allies, who wouldn’t want to be seen in public with Roh.
The Seoul Shinmun, too, noted that not only Kim, but Pyongyang citizens, too, appeared much more subdued as they welcomed Roh to their city.
This morning, however, Father Juche seemed to be his normal, jovial self — Yonhap News noted his much brighter expression upon meeting his South Korean counterpart prior to their big summit talks. The two chatted, with Kim smiling gently throughout. He was even nodding his head and mixing in hand gestures.
The Chosun Ilbo, BTW, notes something else of interest — North Korea’s bodyguards have changed their image, going from the military uniforms of 2000 to the Western suits and earphones of today.
As for the summit, the two leaders met for two and a half hours this morning, and will meet again this afternoon at around 2:30 for more talks.

I’m surprised they need that much small talk before they finally get to handing over the briefcase stuffed with money.
What do you mean “a briefcase stuffed with money”? The trunks of all the Mercedes Benz being delievered as tribute to our Dear Leader will all brim full with cash.

KJI is probably happy because Roh is giving even more than expected.
YTN has a little footage from their meeting. As typical for a summit meeting, Roh is flanked by several advisors on either side, but there appears to be only one man on KJI’s right and no one on the left. Any idea who this VIP is?

Close call, but Roh’s is more boring than bad. I swear to God that KJI looks almost extactly like the ajumah who sells me vitamins in Namdaemun Market. Except she’s taller than both of them.

KJI wanted $10 billion (not million, as Dr.Evil made the same mistake) for this year and another $10 billion for next year.

ON a personal note…I really dislike certain political figures too and I probably would not want to meet with….say….the head of hezbolla, but if the guy paid me enough money just to be seen with him, I might be willing but I wouldn’t have to like it and I’m sure I wouldn’t be smiling either.
