The Marmot’s Hole

As was widely reported yesterday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il didn’t appear to be particularly excited upon meeting President Roh yesterday.

This is probably understandable, as there are a good many South Korean politicians, including some of his erstwhile political allies, who wouldn’t want to be seen in public with Roh.

The Seoul Shinmun, too, noted that not only Kim, but Pyongyang citizens, too, appeared much more subdued as they welcomed Roh to their city.

This morning, however, Father Juche seemed to be his normal, jovial self — Yonhap News noted his much brighter expression upon meeting his South Korean counterpart prior to their big summit talks. The two chatted, with Kim smiling gently throughout. He was even nodding his head and mixing in hand gestures.

The Chosun Ilbo, BTW, notes something else of interest — North Korea’s bodyguards have changed their image, going from the military uniforms of 2000 to the Western suits and earphones of today.

As for the summit, the two leaders met for two and a half hours this morning, and will meet again this afternoon at around 2:30 for more talks.
